In this episode we revist Dr Joe Spurgeon's presentation from our Lunch and Learn series (February 2021).Dr. Joe Spurgeon is an internationally recognised expert in air pollution, combustion toxicology, and indoor environmental assessment. Drawing on decades of research and fieldwork, Dr. Spurgeon shares findings from his post-restoration study of wildfire-impacted homes, exploring how different sampling methods including tape lifts and wet wipes can reveal the extent of soot, char, and aldehyde contamination.Listeners will gain valuable insights into:How wildfire smoke residues persist months after an eventThe strengths and limitations of various surface and airborne sampling methodsThe challenges in defining “background conditions” after restorationPractical implications for restoration professionals and IAQ practitionersFor more resources and upcoming events, visit www.iaqaaustralia.org.au and join the conversation with #IAQAAPod.
In this episode, we’re joined by Ash Boss-Handley, a Certified Occupational Hygienist with extensive experience across construction, tunnelling, and mining industries. Ash shares insights into the unique challenges of working in underground environments, where a range of hazards—some less visible than others—can pose significant risks. While high-profile dangers often get the most attention, mould is a frequently overlooked issue in these settings, particularly due to inadequate ventilation and persistent humidity. Ash helps us unpack why mould deserves more focus, and how it impacts worker health and safety. We also explore what modern tunnelling and mining operations look like today, and the kinds of control measures used to manage these environmental hazards.
Canines have been used to detect hidden mould for over 20 years. As one of the added investigative tools of a mould inspector, the dogs are able to pinpoint the location of mould infestations with a 98% rate of accuracy. They have been able to find mould behind fiber walls, wood and concrete. And they are your family friend when not working. In this episode we revisit Hank Nolan's presentation from our Lunch and Learn series (October 2020).Hank is a retired Master Sgt from the US Army. In his 27 year career as a Military Policeman he spent 6 years as a K9 handler.Upon his return home he and his business partner continued training canines for explosive and narcotics detection.  They received an inquiry from a client as to if dogs could be safely trained to detect hidden moulds is their buildings.  The challenge was accepted. Over 1300 dogs later, here we are.
In recent times dust storms, bushfires and the coronavirus have brought a focus to HVAC systems and their role in providing a healthy indoor environment during these events. This presentation will provide insights into HVAC design, operation and maintenance and how these systems can be configured to deal with these types of environmental challenges. In this episode we revisit Bryon Price's presentation from our lunch and learn series (September 2020). Bryon Price is a professional engineer with long and notable experience in building services. He is the Strategic Development Director for the A.G. Coombs Group of Companies.
