Chris Dolson has a terrific idea he inherited from his professor and mentor, Haddon Robinson: bring together an expert on a book of the Bible with 35-40 pastors who are experts on their churches and tasked with the responsibility to teach and preach.   The result is the DIDASKO seminars that are taking place all around the United States.  If the busy-ness of ministry has caused you to fall out of love with the Scriptures, these seminars are for you.   To find a time and location near you go to Didasko Seminars. When is the last time you heard a strong, inspiring sermon on the ascension of Christ?  Ross Hastings has noticed how churches, Protestant churches in particular, neglect the doctrine of the ascension in their preaching and teaching.  Why is that?  It is central to the New Testament story and the continuing story of the gospel. Dr. Hastings joins David Capes on The Stone Chapel Podcast to talk about his book, The Glory of the Ascension: Celebrating a Doctrine for the Life of the Church.   You'd be surprised how many teachings and Christian practices tie into this neglected doctrine.  Here is a transcript for today's podcast episode. TSCP 269 Hall of Reason: Science Meets Faith with Janet Siefert Janet Siefert joins David Capes on this episode to discuss where science meets faith.  Janet hosts 6-8 events called "Hall of Reason" annually at the Lanier Theological Library and Learning Center.  As a scientist and a Christian, she has a level of knowledge and curiosity to help others who may be struggling with questions of faith and science.   For Janet, when faith meets science, it is not a debate or a fight; it's not contentious.  For her, it's a pleasant and courteous exchange of ideas.   Here is the transcript for TSCP 269 Hall of Reason: Science Meets Faith Listen to more episodes of The Stone Chapel Podcast.   TSCP 268 Another Awakening in Germany? with Benjamin Marx and Jurgen Schulz In 1958 a quiet awakening came to an area of southern Germany, led by a German Lutheran Pastor.  That awakening spread to southern Germany and into parts of France.  As it came, a movement was founded which fostered a Protestant religious order of men and women, who took vows of poverty and chastity.  They became the backbone of the movement in Adelshofen.    In this podcast we explore a bit of the history, mission and uniqueness of this school with Dr. Jurgen Schulz, the president, and with a lecturer in New Testament, Dr. Benjamin Marx.  Is the Awakening back again?   You can listen to more episodes of The Stone Chapel Podcast here. TSCP 267 A Call for Papers with David Capes Today's podcast is a bit different.  David Capes, our host, extends a call for papers for the Evangelical Foundation for Biblical Research (https://efbr.net/).  The foundation covers all expenses for the scholars and their spouses to Myrtle Beach, SC, for the conferences held May 28-30, 2026.  In addition, we expect each invited scholar to submit their finished essay for publication in order receive a $500 stipend.  A publication agreement is already in place.    For a copy of the transcript for this week's podcast, click here. Is the idea of the resurrection found in the Old Testament? Some say, no. Some say, yes. Is it found in the New Testament? Absolutely, it's central to the message! But do those mysterious, wonderful desert scrolls have anything to say on the subject? Dr. Andrew Perrin, a Dead Sea Scrolls scholar, joins David Capes on "The Stone Chapel Podcast" to summarize a lecture he brings to students enrolled in the Lanier Certificate in Theology and Ministry. Perrin has an amazing background in the scrolls and offers some insights into two of the scrolls. "The Stone Chapel Podcast" is part of the ChurchLeaders Podcast Network. Dr. Oliver Hersey joins David Capes for this episode of "The Stone Chapel Podcast." He became president of Jerusalem University College, and now they are going through a war that began in October 2023. The college is located on Mount Zion right outside the Jerusalem city gates. Their mission is to help students see the Bible come alive as they study in the land of Israel. But that has been a challenge through COVID and now the war. Still, miracles abound, and they are ready for the next, peaceful chapter. "The Stone Chapel Podcast" is part of the ChurchLeaders Podcast Network. One theme in the New Testament that has not been studied: mothers and motherhood. That is until now. Dr. Jennifer Houston McNeel, a New Testament professor at the St. Mary's Ecumenical Institute in Baltimore, MD, has now written that book—"Under Her Wings: Mother and Motherhood in the New Testament." She joins David Capes on "The Stone Chapel Podcast" to discuss how themes of mother and motherhood shape the story of the Gospels, but also leaders like Jesus, Paul, and John. These men talk freely about themselves as church leaders not only in fatherly tones but also in motherly as well. And they extend those qualities to God himself. It's an important book for pastors, church leaders, and scholars alike. "The Stone Chapel Podcast" is part of the ChurchLeaders Podcast Network. Indigenous leader, Terry Wildman, is back on "The Stone Chapel Podcast." This time he and David Capes discuss the newest release of the "First Nations Version, Psalms and Proverbs." On this episode, Darlene Wildman, Terry's wife, plays a native flute. Her music brings out the beauty and dignity to reading Holy Scripture. The First Nations Version (FNV) renders many aspects of the Hebrew Bible in ways that speak to the ideas and values of the people who used to occupy "Turtle Island," the native American way of talking about North America. You would figure that someone who was Provost at the University of Notre Dame and President of Wake Forest University would know how to recruit the best leaders for the schools. And you'd be correct. Dr. Nathan Hatch held both of those jobs for 25 years, and he learned how to recruit the best team around him. You can learn that too, but you have to be smart and secure. Read all about it in his book, "The Gift of Transformative Leaders, Cambridge Element Series" (Cambridge University Press). He joins David Capes on "The Stone Chapel Podcast" to talk about it. Gary Burge had a difficult job. This NT professor wrote the volume on Galatians and Ephesians for the "Through Old Testament Eyes" series with Kregel Academic. It was published earlier this year. He stops by to talk with David Capes about his project and that he discovered along the way, how different the two books are. So he wonders: did Paul's theology change from his first book to his last? Not only is Paul's context different in that roughly 14-15 year period but Paul himself may have changed. Symbols are all around us. They are so common we aren't even aware they are symbols, but we know what each one means. But what happens after 1,500 years when languages and cultures have come and gone? Well, someone has to rediscover those symbols and their significance. That is exactly what Dr. Danny Hays and his colleagues have done. They have found various Christian symbols literally right under the noses of historians and archaeologists, carved into hard Roman paving stones. He joins David Capes on "The Stone Chapel Podcast" to talk about his book, "The Ichthus Christogram and other Early Christian Symbols." Marcus Lawhon leads Hamoreh Ministries. It is dedicated to training pastors and church leaders in remote places in east Africa. While seminaries in the west are searching for students, the growing churches of Africa are searching for theological education for their pastors. Hamoreh is Hebrew for "The Teacher," a word that aptly describes the exciting work being done. Marcus sat down with David Capes to talk about some remarkable results. On any given Sunday, worship leaders spend 30-40% of the time in front of a congregation. They lead the church in song, prayer, and adoration, key elements of the service. How well are these worship leaders prepared? Are they spiritually mature and growing? Are they biblically formed? Asaph's Table is an initiative by Leslianne and Tyler Newberry to address many of these challenges. If you know a worship leader, make sure they hear this. In this podcast, we revisit some old friends, Lynn Cohick, Sandra Glahn, and Nijay Gupta. Each has contributed in their own way to fill out the story of the Church. Church history often focuses on the men who were the leaders for the last 2,000 years, but what of the women? They occupied unique roles in their day as leaders, patrons, and martyrs in their own right. "The Stone Chapel Podcast" is part of the ChurchLeaders Podcast Network. This is an encore edition of an early episode of "The Stone Chapel Podcast." David Capes talks with N. T. Wright about his book, "Jesus and the Powers" (Zondervan). Wright and his co-author, Michael Bird, are deeply concerned about the political polarization in cultures now across the globe. And they are more disturbed with how Christians are responding in the midst of it. Wright and Bird address these issues with wisdom and theological clarity.
