For Zimmern, local cuisine - bizarre, gross or downright stomach turning as it may be to us - is not simply what's served at mealtime. Title: Travelling to Work
Subtitle: Diaries 1988-1998
Author: Michael Palin
Narrator: Michael Palin
Format: Unabridged
Length: 23 hrs and 48 mins
Language: English
Release date: 09-11-14
Publisher: Orion Publishing Group
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 8 votes
Genres: Travel & Adventure, Adventure & Exploration
Publisher's Summary:
Travelling to Work is the third volume of Michael Palin's widely acclaimed diaries. After the Python years and a decade of filming, writing and acting, Palin's career takes an unexpected direction into travel, which will shape his working life for the next 25 years. Yet, as the diaries reveal, he remained ferociously busy on a host of other projects throughout this whirlwind period.
Travelling to Work opens in September 1988 with Michael travelling down the Adriatic on the first leg of a modern-day Around the World in 80 Days. He was not the BBC's first choice for the series, but after its success and that of the accompanying book, the public naturally wanted more. Palin, though, has other plans.
Following the tumultuous success of A Fish Called Wanda, he is in demand as an actor. His next film, American Friends, is based on his great-grandfather's diaries. Next he takes on his most demanding role as the head teacher in Alan Bleasdale's award-winning drama series GBH. There is also his West End play, The Weekend, and a first novel, Hemingway's Chair, and a lead role in Fierce Creatures, the much-delayed follow-up to Wanda.
Michael describes himself as 'drawn to risk like a moth to a flame. Someone grounded and safe who can be tempted into almost anything.' He duly finds time for two more travel series, Pole to Pole, in 1991; Full Circle, in 1996; and two more best-selling books to accompany them.
These latest Diaries show a man grasping every opportunity that came his way, and they deal candidly with the doubts and setbacks that accompany this prodigious word-rate. As ever, his family life, with three children growing up fast, is there to anchor him.
Travelling to Work is a roller-coaster ride driven by the Palin hallmarks of curiosity and sense of adventure. These 10 years in different directions offer riches on every page to his ever-growing army of fans.

Title: At the Mercy of the Sea
Subtitle: The True Story of Three Sailors in a Caribbean Hurricane
Author: John Kretschmer
Narrator: Patrick Conn
Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 3 mins
Language: English
Release date: 12-19-13
Publisher: New Street Communications, LLC
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 95 votes
Genres: Travel & Adventure, Adventure & Exploration
Publisher's Summary:
"The tale of Carl Wake and the hurricane that was waiting for him goes straight to the heart of the greatest sea stories: they are not about man against the sea, but man against himself. John Kretschmer's audiobook is as perfectly shaped and flawlessly written as such a story can be. In addition to being the best depiction I have ever listened to of what it is like to be inside a hurricane at sea, At the Mercy of the Sea is as moving a story of a man's failure and redemption as can be found anywhere in the literature of the sea. This audiobook is surely destined to become a classic." (Peter Nichols, author of Sea Change and A Voyage for Madmen).
"John Kretschmer has transformed this story of three men on a collision course with a hurricane into a modern seafaring classic." (Peter Nielsen, editor of SAIL magazine).
"With expert analysis and taut writing, he draws listeners into that mad storm. You can't turn away. You keep listening until it breaks your heart." (Fred Grimm, columnist for the Miami Herald).
"Once begun, his vivid and powerful narrative is impossible to stop listening." (Derek Lundy, author of Godforsaken Sea and The Way of a Ship).
"I felt I knew Carl Wake, because John Kretschmer found in him an archetype - an aging sailor with an age-old dream." (Jim Carrier, transatlantic sailor and author of The Ship and the Storm: Hurricane Mitch and the Loss of the Fantome).
"A remarkable audiobook, impossible to stop listening to." (Herb McCormick, sailing journalist).

Title: One Dry Season
Subtitle: In the Footsteps of Mary Kingsley
Author: Caroline Alexander
Narrator: Lisette Lecat
Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 28 mins
Language: English
Release date: 09-12-12
Publisher: Recorded Books
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 5 votes
Genres: Travel & Adventure, Adventure & Exploration
Publisher's Summary:
With richly evocative images and wonderfully entertaining anecdotes, Caroline Alexander transports you to the dense interior of equatorial Gabon. In One Dry Season, she chronicles her adventures as she makes her way alone through dangerously primitive territory.
When she first read of Victorian explorer Mary Kingsleys travels in the French colony of Gabon, Alexander knew she had to experience the present-day nation for herself. Soon she is retracing Kingsleys route - struggling through tangled vines in humid rain forests, chugging up the churning Ogooué River in a packed steamer, and fending off gigantic cockroaches. The country she discovers is a challenging mixture of Africas exotic past and its practical present.
A splendid storyteller, Caroline Alexander introduces you to the colorful new friends she made along the trail, including a shy mission nun, a half-mad French woman, and a village chief who treated her as an errant teenaged daughter. Lisette Lecats expert narration brings out all the excitement of todays Africa.

Titel: Die Sumpfleute - Begegnungen in Lappland
Autor:: Siegfried Lenz
Erzähler: Walter Hilsbecher, Brigitte Dryander
Format: Unabridged
Spieldauer: 1 hr and 1 min
Sprache: Deutsch
Veröffentlichungsdatum: 12-12-17
Herausgeber: Saarländischer Rundfunk
Kategorien: Travel & Adventure, Adventure & Exploration
Regie: Wolfgang Schenck

Title: Spirit of the Wind
Subtitle: A Woman's View of Sailing Across the Ocean
Author: Bunny Throckmorton
Narrator: Natasha Harper
Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 25 mins
Language: English
Release date: 09-07-17
Publisher: Waldorf Publishing
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 3 votes
Genres: Travel & Adventure, Adventure & Exploration
Publisher's Summary:
This audiobook is the story of sailing across the ocean from Guam to San Francisco on our wonderful sailboat, the "Spirit of the Wind", a 41 foot Taiwan-built Ketch designed by William Garden. A group of 20-something kids went to Guam looking for the meaning of life, bought a boat, fixed it up, and learned to sail across the ocean. It was a beautiful and spiritual journey, while at times was totally and completely terrifying. It introduced me to the South Pacific Islands and the wonderful and gracious people there - it was truly a paradise.
The warm trade winds that I can feel sometimes in my dreams, the feel and sounds of the wind in the sails and moving through fear. I learned to improvise in the moment, how to deal with life then there was no land for weeks on end, with just the horizon all around - as if we were sailing on a mirror. It introduced me to the wonders of the ocean and its inhabitants. This trip changed my life and what I thought the world was. It enabled me to see, feel, and do things that I didn't know I was capable of. It was a serious lesson in being with three other people, all men, in a 40 foot sailboat with very little privacy. It taught me that the weather goes on - it doesn't help to pray for it to change and is bigger than us. It was transformational in so many ways, facing death almost daily.
