A Crime Most Queer

A Crime Most Queer explores crimes committed by or against members of the Queer community. Nj Hourquebie delves into true stories of murder, assault, victimisation and hate crimes involving LGBTQ people, mainly in but not limited to South Africa. With each episode, he looks into the backgrounds of each of the players, how their paths crossed so tragically, and what makes these cases “queer”, as in both relating to their LGBTQ connections and the twists and kinks that make them particularly bizarre. The Baby-Faced Killer: The Murder of Morgan Huxley

In the early hours of Sunday, 8 September 2013, Jean Redmond makes a gruesome discovery. Her housemate, 31-year-old Morgan Huxley, is found half-naked and bloody in his bedroom, with multiple stab wounds to his upper body, neck and head. Despite paramedics doing all they can, he succumbs to his injuries en route to the hospital. Who could have hated him so much that they would end his life this way? As it turns out, a chance encounter with a stranger in a convenience store was all it took to set events in motion that would lead to his death. The South African Parole System: Is it Brilliant or Broken?

In a break from ACMQ’s usual storytelling format, Nj sits down with Nicole Englebrecht, author, and podcaster (True Crime South Africa), to discuss the South African parole system and what could be done to improve the system and minimise the risk of revictimization. They dive into topics, ranging from Nicole's experience writing her book, Sizzlers: The Hate Crime that Tore Sea Point Apart and the cases she has covered on her podcast that touch on the parole process, to how the parole system can be improved and what alternatives South Africa could consider. Nj also get Nicole's input on his conversations with Julian Knight, the lawyer who has previously represented Oscar Pistorius and Janusz Waluś in their parole applications, Tania Koen, who represented June and Barry Steenkamp at Oscar’s parole hearing, and heads up the Reeva Rebecca Steenkamp Foundation, and Karin Pampel, the trauma counsellor who worked with Nj in the wake of his 2023 assault. The Kansas City Butcher | The Life & Crimes of Bob Berdella

For 17 years, Bob Berdella convinced his neighbours that he was a bit of an oddball, but mostly harmless. Others, however, mostly the rejects and reprobates of society, knew better. When a naked man, wearing only a dog collar, flees from his house in April 1988, he reveals a story beyond imagining, a story of kidnapping, sexual sadism, and murder. Upstairs Horror in Downtown New Orleans: Part III | The Arson of the UpStairs Lounge

When gay New Orleanians headed out to the UpStairs Lounge in the French Quarter on Sunday, June 24th, 1973, they had no idea that many of them would never be returning home. A fire started in the main stairwell leading up to the bar quickly spread, as patrons desperately tried to escape the burning building. Until the Pulse Nightclub Massacre in 2016, this was the worst loss of Queer life in American history. Murder in Mooinooi | The Violation of Joey & Anisha van Niekerk

When Joey and Anisha van Niekerk didn’t arrive in Pretoria for Joey’s father’s funeral on December 11th, 2017, their families knew something was wrong and drove to the women’s farm in Mooinooi, in North West Province. They found the farm untouched but, when they encountered Koos Strydom, who rented a workshop from the couple, his story didn’t quite add up. This is the story of how greed brought about the senseless murder of two women all because of a farm.
