Mr Q was an offender on remand for GBH when I went to assess him in prison as part of my role as an expert witness. He had become the target of gangs on the outside after they believed he had been a snitch. A label that would follow him. In prison he was attacked repeatedly and while alone in his cell his mental health was deteriorating. He was traumatised by a teenage incident where his friend was murdered right in front of him when they were jumped by a gang in his hometown. In this episode I go through why my mental health assessment of Mr Q didn’t go to plan, Mr Q’s history and symptoms and how I was able to gain vital information to help Mr Q get the mental health treatment he needed. Do you know how many doctors are needed to section someone? Or what the criteria is for someone to require a section? What about the difference between a Section 2, Section 3 or a Section 37? I explain all this here in this episode. I also tell you what problems a psychiatrist, like myself, can encounter when sectioning someone and the various different professionals involved when a person is sectioned into a psychiatric hospital. This episode is the first of three in a series where I focus on gangs. I'm going to answer the key questions you have about gangs and tell you about three of my own cases that I've personally assessed as a Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist working in London. In this episode I'll tell you about a teenager charged with the brutal attempted murder of another teenager after a gang fight. When he started to hear voices while behind bars, it was my job to go in and assess him. Weeks later I found out his victim tragically died. This teenager saw his charges upgraded to murder. I'm a criminal psychiatrist; I’ve assessed dozens of patients who have a formal diagnosis of psychopathy and many more who have narcissistic traits. So, where other people chat about narcissism and psychopathy on their podcasts, I’ve actually lived it and today, I'm bringing my expertise and experience to you. Both narcissists and psychopaths often offend because they have little capacity for empathy, and they just don't feel the rules apply to them. But narcissism is about praise, appearance and how they look to other people. What other people think of them matters. Psychopaths don't care what others think. They have no need for affirmation from anyone else. Psychopaths instead are predators looking to manipulate and take advantage of everyone and anyone. email me at psychforsoreminds@gmail.com or join me on social media:- TWITTER - https://twitter.com/PsychSore FACEBOOK - https://www.facebook.com/PsychSore INSTAGRAM - https://www.instagram.com/psychforsoreminds *New episodes EVERY TUESDAY AND FRIDAY plus our series TIME FOR A QUICK SHRINK? where I answer your questions on mental health*
After doing some reading on covid psychosis I've been a little concerned to discover that it is a very real thing. Months after suffering with the Covid-19 virus, a small proportion of people are developing psychosis, that is an episode of being out of touch with reality for a period of time. For many it comes as a surprise and very unexpectedly. In this episode I delve a little deeper into what we know about coronavirus psychosis, and I tell you more about psychosis as a psychiatric manifestation including psychotic episodes and how they can present in different people. I also talk about schizophrenia and how this condition presents through multiple episodes of psychosis. The New York Times article I talk about in the video is here if you'd like to take a look for yourselves - https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/28/health/covid-psychosis-mental.html WATCH THIS EPISODE ON YOUTUBE - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDMoLRTZnak&t=71s Catch-up with all episodes on YouTube - https://youtube.com/apsychforsoreminds If you have any questions about this episode or about mental health, please do get in touch. Bamber told police it was his sister Sheila, who had paranoid schizophrenia, that murdered their family and then took her own life. A version of events police initially believed. But that belief didn't last long. Jeremy Bamber to this day protests his innocence in these horrific murders and he has a lot of supporters who believe he is innocent of these crimes. My area of expertise as a consultant forensic psychiatrist is the crossover between mental illness and offending. I hadn't heard of this case until Kay Page from White House Farm podcast introduced me to it. I wanted to take a look at this case from a different angle, answering two questions: How realistic was it for Jeremy Bamber to try and frame his sister Sheila for these murders? and, why did Jeremy Bamber fail? When you're a Forensic Psychiatrist you learn to expect the unexpected. In this episode I'm going to tell you about two of my real-life cases who I personally assessed. In the first, I was hoodwinked. Fooled into believing the defendant was mentally ill when in fact this young lady was skilled in presenting extreme behaviours to trick her doctors. In the second case it was the opposite. Mr W was the reverse of malingering. He had a previous mental health diagnosis of Bipolar Affective Disorder and I think was possibly psychotic at the time of his crimes. But, he played down his mental illness which ended up actually hurting his case. How easy is it to fake symptoms of mental illness? In this episode I'm going to tell you the tactics and intutions I've learned in my career as a Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist to pick up when a patient or offender is malingering. I'll also tell you about Miss B, a patient I personally assessed at the request of the Crown Prosecution service to see if she was fit to plead in her fraud case due at the Old Bailey in London. I think Miss B exaggerated her mental illness and got her charges dropped despite the evidence I gave to the court. I'll tell you the full story right here in this episode! One of the questions I get asked the most is 'Do people fake mental illness whilst they’re on trial?' Facing a possible conviction and prison time, some defendants do think that fabricating mental illness is a way out. This episode is the first in a brand new series on faking mental illness or what us doctors like to call 'malingering'. As a consultant forensic psychiatrist I assess criminal defendants all the time and around once a month I do an assessment where I’m suspicious that the defendant is malingering. Over these next episodes I’m going answer your questions about faking mental illness. I’m going to tell you why patients fabricate mental illness, how I spot this and tell you about some of my true life cases of defendants and prisoners fabricating and exaggerating mental illness. Do you think Michael Jordan is a psychopath? His passion and dedication to basketball is definitely intense, but does he have enough traits to put him over the threshold for a psychopath? Let's find out! Dr Das is a big Michael Jordan fan and an article he read recently sparked off an idea to test the psychopathy checklist he's talked about in earlier episodes in this series, on his favourite basketball player and see if he can answer that question. A grandiose sense of self-worth, pathological lying, conning and manipulative, lack of remorse or guilt...all of these are items on the 20 item psychopathy checklist (PCLR). Watch Dr Das run though each one as he applies them to Michael Jordan and hear his final conclusion. "Life is not black and white and neither are people." - Psychopaths are manipulative individuals skilled at hiding their true intentions. In this second episode on psychopaths, Dr Das tells the story of Mr P, a patient clinically diagnosed as a psychopath and being held in a secure psychiatric unit. Mr P had a long criminal history, but the path for this patient, his childhood background and how this story ended might surprise you. Psychopaths can also do very well in the corporate world. Their unemotional and ruthless if necessary approach can lead them up the career ladder. But what's it like to work for a psychopath? To have a psychopath as your boss, making the decisions and giving the orders? Dr Das tells you his own experience in this situation. When is it appropriate and when is it misleading to say that you are a doctor? Our world is increasingly digital where people are online searching for information on health and mental health. If you're presenting yourself as an expert in the field, being honest and transparent about what you are, and are not, qualified to talk about is not just important, it's vital. Dr Das talks directly to Dr Grande, who on his YouTube channel discusses and assesses the mental health of celebrities, criminals, and those in the public eye. Dr Das challenges Dr Grande to be more transparent about his expertise and qualifications; there is no information on his channel about this. According to his LinkedIn profile, Dr Grande has a PhD in philosophy and is a licensed mental health counsellor. But does he actually have any specific expertise in psychological matters or psychiatry? Dr Grande appears to be going against his own stated position in his recent video on misleading the public about being a doctor. So, Dr Das asks; “Is Dr Grande the right type of doctor?” Let him know what you think. Check-in on social media using @psychsore or email at psychforsoreminds@gmail.com
What is a psychopath? Are all mass murderers psychopaths? Why do psychopaths do so well in the corporate world? Dr Sohom Das is a Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist who lives and works in London. He assesses and rehabilitates mentally disordered offenders. In his career, he has rehabilitated and formally diagnosed clinical psychopaths. Did you know about 1% of the general population is a psychopath? That number can be as high as 25% in male prisoners depending on the psychopath test used. In the first of a fascinating series of episodes on psychopaths, Dr Das explores the clinical definition of a psychopath, how this is assessed, and how it is diagnosed. If you have any questions about mental illness or about psychopaths Dr Das would love to hear from you! Email at psychforsoreminds@gmail.com. Look out for more videos in this series where Dr Das gives a case study of a former psychopathy patient who duped him and others with a shocking ending and hear what it's like to work for a psychopath.
In 2018 Alek Minassian hired a van in Toronto, Canada, and ran over 26 pedestrians, killing 10. Minassian has autism and his recent trial has been controversial. Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist Dr. Sohom Das discusses this case, explaining the complex issues at play and the controversy around them. Was Minassian criminally responsible? Was he trying to use his autism as an excuse during his trial? Did he really know what he was doing was wrong? All these questions are examined in this episode by Dr. Das.

Don't know if you heard yet? The Yorkshire Ripper died last week. The judge in Peter Sutcliffe's case ignored four forensic psychiatrists testimonies in order to send Sutcliffe to prison. Was this really punishment for Sutcliffe or the other prisoners?
