Welcome to episode 103 of the AI for Technical Writers podcast from Curt Robbins. This educational content is designed to give IT professionals and technical writers a competitive edge. This episode reviews a recent article by Amy Daali, who describes herself as a disruptive AI thought leaders and engineer. In her October 8 article entitled "Why We’re Blind to the Real Speed of AI," Daali argues that people are misjudging the rapid acceleration of artificial intelligence because of the “exponential growth bias,” which leads humans to perceive progress as linear rather than curved.Daali notes that while gains in traditional metrics like accuracy appear to be slowing down—with smaller improvements between models like GPT-4o and GPT-5—this metric is fundamentally flawed for assessing true intelligence. Her insightful article proposes that AI autonomy is a far better measure of progress, defining it as how long an AI can sustain high performance without human intervention. Research from the METR group shows that this specific capacity has been doubling exponentially every seven months, suggesting AI systems could be capable of month-long autonomous work by 2028-2031 if this trend continues._________________________________"It will not be AI that takes away the job of a technical writer, but rather another technical writer with deep AI skills," said Robbins.I am currently taking on new clients. Welcome to episode 101 of the AI for Technical Writers podcast from Curt Robbins. This educational content is designed to give IT professionals and technical writers a competitive edge. This episode reviews a recent article by Nigerian technical writer Damilola Oladele entitled "Why Editing Matters More Than Ever With AI-assisted Writing." This insightful article argues that editing is the crucial difference between average and highly productive writers in the age of artificial intelligence. Oladele distinguishes between "AI writing," where the tool handles the entire process—which leads to a lack of originality and factual errors—and "AI-assisted writing"—where the writer maintains control over ideas and structure while using AI for mechanical tasks. Although AI assistance improves productivity, it introduces limitations. These include a tendency toward copywriting style and structural inconsistencies, especially problematic for technical writing. Oladele emphasizes that mastering four types of editing (structural, stylistic, copy, and proofreading) is essential to address AI's shortcomings and ensuring that content remains clear, accurate, and organized._________________________________"It will not be AI that takes away the job of a technical writer, but rather another technical writer with deep AI skills," said Robbins.I am currently taking on new clients. Welcome to episode 100 of the AI for Technical Writers podcast from Curt Robbins. This educational content is designed to give IT professionals and technical writers a competitive edge.Today's episode features a review of a recent study by Yale's Budget Lab entitled "Evaluating the Impact of AI on the Labor Market: Current State of Affairs." The study provides an analysis of the initial impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the U.S. labor market since the introduction of generative AI (ChatGPT) in November 2022.The authors conclude that—despite widespread public anxiety about job losses—their data indicates no substantial, economy-wide disruption or acceleration in the rate of change in the occupational mix that can be clearly attributed to AI. Historical precedent suggests that the full effects of widespread technological change typically materialize over decades, not months, which aligns with the current findings of stability. To reach this conclusion, the researchers examined changes in the occupational mix compared to past technological shifts (like the internet), as well as theoretical AI "exposure" data from OpenAI and actual AI usage data from Anthropic, finding no clear relationship between these metrics and changes in employment or unemployment. The report emphasizes that better, comprehensive usage data from all major AI companies is necessary to accurately measure future impacts._________________________________"It will not be AI that takes away the job of a technical writer, but rather another technical writer with deep AI skills," said Robbins.I am currently taking on new clients. This decision is influenced by a growing distance between Microsoft and OpenAI, as both companies independently pursue their own infrastructure projects and new ventures, such as OpenAI's foray into a LinkedIn competitor (LinkedIn is owned by Microsoft). Microsoft believes Anthropic's Claude Sonnet 4 model offers superior performance in certain functions, including creating presentations. This move is not merely a negotiating tactic for an upcoming deal with OpenAI. Microsoft is actively developing its own in-house AI models and already offers other models like xAI's Grok and Anthropic's Claude through GitHub Copilot, illustrating a broader effort towards self-reliance and varied AI capabilities.Hosts Daphne and Fred share their spirited analysis of the Techcrunch article and help listeners understand the significance of this news and how it may affect their careers and jobs."It will not be AI that takes away the job of a technical writer, but rather another technical writer with deep AI skills," said Robbins.I am currently taking on new clients. The paper explores the phenomenon of "hallucinations" in large language models (LLMs), where they generate plausible—but incorrect—information. The authors attribute these errors to the training and evaluation processes, arguing that models are rewarded for guessing over admitting uncertainty. They establish a statistical connection between generative errors and binary classification misclassification rates during pretraining, showing that even with error-free data, certain errors are inevitable. Furthermore, the paper explains the persistence of hallucinations in post-training by critiquing current evaluation benchmarks, which predominantly use binary scoring that penalizes expressions of uncertainty, effectively incentivizing models to "bluff." Hosts Daphne and Fred unpack this research paper with their typical spirited analysis and insightful summarization. They examine and analyze how the paper's authors propose a socio-technical solution, advocating for modifications to existing evaluations to explicitly incorporate confidence targets and reward appropriate displays of uncertainty, thereby steering the field toward more trustworthy AI systems."It will not be AI that takes away the job of a technical writer, but rather another technical writer with deep AI skills," said Robbins.I am currently taking on new clients. Mollick emphasizes that GPT-5 "just does stuff," demonstrating its ability to autonomously select optimal models for tasks, anticipate user needs by suggesting next steps, and even develop complex applications from vague prompts. This new iteration of AI significantly reduces the burden of prompt engineering, allowing users to achieve remarkable results with minimal and less precise input. However, Mollick also notes that human oversight remains crucial for checking errors and making decisions, despite the AI's increased proactivity. Hosts Daphne and Fred share their spirited analysis of the article, including an examination of the pros and cons of OpenAI's GPT-5."It will not be AI that takes away the job of a technical writer, but rather another technical writer with deep AI skills," said Robbins.I am currently taking on new clients.
