Today’s ArtyParti was recorded a month ago, at the Vane Gallery in Gateshead. The exhibition; Death Magic - by mixed media artist Sofia Barton.Reading from Vane’s website; “Death Magic, part of Gem Arts’ Masala Festival, offers a poignant journey through the intersection of neurodivergent experience, and the rich tapestry of Punjabi perspectives on death, ancestry, and the enduring power of memory."It was, in my own opinion, a beautiful and vibrant exhibition considering the subject, and it was moving to hear about the strong relationship Sofia had with their father which elements of the series. But Sofia can guide you through their exhibition better than I can, so I’ll hand the microphone over to Sofia, as we explore Death Magic and meet some of the attendees.Artists & Creatives featured in the episode:Sofia Barton - Multidisciplinary ArtistPaul Stone - Creative Director, Vane GallerySully Alenezi - Designer & IllustratorAlfie Flounders - Fine Art PhotographerLianne Bell - Artist & Educator (Ceramics & Print)Theresa Easton - Lecturer & Freelance Artist PrintmakerMore about ArtyParti:ArtyParti is a twice-monthly podcast, events series, and community platform that celebrates the work of artists and creatives. Poetry, novels, audio drama, mixed media storytelling, flash fiction, stand-up, and short story writing. The stars just so happened to align at our second Show & Tell back in December, in the creative cafe and clothing store ‘Port Independent’, that every attendee who shared their practice were working with creative writing and storytelling:Poet and printmaker Hester Dowling shares two poetical pieces, inspired by real life moments that stuck with her - both whimsical, and heart-gripping.With her self published book 'Stand Up Mam', author Kay Wilson drew from her own career as a stand-up comedienne when piecing together her novel.Challenging himself to write a series of interconnected 101-word stories, Thomas Nixon shares eight short pieces that tackle an invention that would become humanity’s downfall.Retelling the story of Eros and Psyche from Greek mythology, Benjamin Moore shares a draft of the opening section of an audio drama that he’s written and directed.Multi-disciplinary artist Mim Robson challenged herself to a 100-Days of Storytelling project, turning scraps of paper and cut-up books into a series of short stories told inside matchboxes and tiny frames. And feeling newly inspired to keep writing, Gerard Purvis tells a dark and subversive tale of the monsters in the shadows of your room, in a short story called ‘The Bad Man’.Our artists and creatives featured in the episode:Hester Dowling - Poet and PrintmakerKay Wilson - Author, 'Stand Up Mam'Thomas Nixon - Flash Fiction WriterBenjamin Moore - Audio Drama Writer & ProducerMim Robson - Multi-disciplinary Artist - Textiles & PrintmakingGerard Purvis - Director, Harbour Printworks CICMore about ArtyParti:Our website - www.artyparti.comBluesky - @ArtyPartiInstagram - @Arty_Parti_A Jay Sykes Media podcastOur supporters and funders:The ArtyParti podcast is made possible thanks to the support of our generous Patreon backers:Danielle Chamberlin - Watercolour ArtistChantal Herbert - Founder of Sister Sounds and Sister ShackJo Howell - Photographic ArtistAngela Sandwith - Mixed-Media ArtistStephanie Smith - Visual Artist

In 1897, a young boy was facing his final days living at the Sunderland Orphan Asylum. He was about to turn 14, and would need to leave the orphanage. He was a choirboy, and during one church service he scribbled down words to the future on the back of an order of service. “Dear friend. Whoever finds this paper, think of William Elliott.”Over a century later, as the church was being restored, that letter was rediscovered, folded and mouse-bitten, down the back of a church pew. Which set off the community at Seventeen Nineteen in Sunderland, formerly the Holy Trinity Church, to reach back through time and investigate… What happened to William? This time last year, last April, ‘William’s Castle’ was broadcast on BBC Radio 4. We (as the production company Sister Sounds) held an event, in Seventeen Nineteen in Sunderland, the very place where William hid his letter. And we brought together people involved at various stages of the project to talk about the journey. Our panel was chaired by Chantal Herbert, who is the Founder and Director of Sister Sounds, the Newcastle-based production company behind William’s Castle.Voices featured in the episode:Lily Daniels - Learning & Participation Manager, Gem ArtsChristina Berriman Dawson - ActorStevie Hardy - Master CraftsmanPaige Temperley - Musician & Singer / SongwriterChantal Herbert - Founder & Director of Sister SoundsJay Sykes - Writer & Producer of William's CastleMore about ArtyParti:Our website - www.artyparti.comBluesky - @ArtyPartiInstagram - @Arty_Parti_A Jay Sykes Media podcastOur supporters and funders:The ArtyParti podcast is made possible thanks to the support of our generous Patreon backers:Danielle Chamberlin - Watercolour ArtistChantal Herbert - Founder of Sister Sounds and Sister ShackJo Howell - Photographic ArtistAngela Sandwith - Mixed-Media ArtistStephanie Smith - Visual Artist

On today's ArtyParti, join us to celebrate the work and craft of MA Visual Practice students and graduates at the University of Sunderland, as these artists of various disciplines guide you through their exhibitions at the MA Degree Show. It's kicked off by a moving and evocative speech by Dr. Suzy O'Hara, Lecturer in Digital Arts and Enterprise: "In times of crisis, we must hope." Suzy reflects on this year's graduates; "I believe that artistic skills and competencies... play a fundamental role in realising disruptive, alternative worlds that help secure our futures... We need creativity, and a radical imagination."We imagine glass as delicate and fragile, and Rosie Tremlett uses this sense of fragility to explore the relationship between the hearing world, and the deaf world, through her intricate ‘conches’ made of glass. Whereas another glass blower, Hannah Masi has embraced the discards of this fragile process through ‘The Goblet Bug’, and chose to amass the, quote, ‘failures’ into a single piece. And Jiayun Ding breaks down the glass process into different components, displayed in a collection of jars, as a way of exploring the cycle of human life and death.Across the building, Melissa Duncan, created an immersive walk-through experience of a collection of paintings about learning life lessons while growing up, all dedicated to her grandma, Ada. And through a series of painted birds, whose feet are golden and becoming part of the frame itself, Jenny Hawkins documents the true stories of women and their experiences.Downstairs, two photographers were sharing a gallery space, and both collections are united by the effects of humans on the natural environment. One of them is Colin Pickett, exploring waste sites on coastal landscapes. And in photographer Matthew Lewis’ collection ‘Cats of Greece’, he documents the lives of the four-legged island dwellers who live their lives on the streets of Greek islands.MA Visual Practice students & graduates:Anna Rose Tremlett - Glass Blower and Gallery WorkerHannah Masi - Glass BlowerJiayun Ding - Glass ArtistMelissa Duncan - Visual ArtistJenny Hawkins - Visual ArtistColin Pickett - Photographic ArtistMatthew Lewis - Photographic ArtistFeaturing the voices of visitors & speakers:Dr. Cate Watkinson - Research Culture Fellow and Senior Lecturer in Architectural GlassDr. Suzy O’Hara - Lecturer in Digital Arts & EnterprisePosy Jowett - Freelance Cultural Facilitator & ConsultantJane Imrie - Freelance P.R., Comms Consultant & Content WriterSu Devine - Visual Artist, Breeze Creatives, Founder of Art CaféYnez Tulsen - MA Radio, Audio and PodcastingNicole Saenchan - Footwear & Accessories DesignerNora Nadvegi - Designer, Illustrator, AnimatorMore about ArtyParti:Our website - www.artyparti.comBluesky - @ArtyPartiInstagram - @Arty_Parti_A Jay Sykes Media podcastOur supporters and funders:The ArtyParti podcast is made possible thanks to the support of our generous Patreon backers:Danielle Chamberlin - Watercolour ArtistChantal Herbert - Founder of Sister Sounds and Sister ShackJo Howell - Photographic ArtistAngela Sandwith - Mixed-Media ArtistStephanie Smith - Visual Artist

Reflect back on 2022, and look ahead to 2023, with seven members of our artistic & creative community:Caligo - Visual Artist- "The feeling of collaborating with other artists, and then seeing my work on a gallery wall... An experience that I'm hoping to have more in the future.... I found my mind churning new ideas again.... I feel like my inspiration and creative drive have been re-ignited."Ken Devine - Artist / Owner of Frederick Street Gallery- "I want to evolve, I need to evolve as an artist... So for 2023, I'll continue my ongoing quest to agitate the artistic waters of stagnation as I chase that elusive, magical dancing light, colour, and painterliness that this artist in particular craves."Glenda Young - Best-Selling Author- "I'm a best-selling author, and I've waited all of my life to say that... My hopes and dreams for 2023 will be to calm down a little it, to have a quieter year. I've been very busy, which is fantastic, and I continue to write, but I just want to take a breather and enjoy the success a little."Kathryn Barnett - Director of Regeneration North East / Producer / Artist- "So what has 2022 taught us? Sadly, discrimination is still a major problem - not just for disabled people, but for all minority groups... We don't get up in the morning to win prizes, it's because we love what we do as artists, and we believe in its outcomes."Jo Howell - Photographic Artist- "Our world is seemingly on fire... Luckily we weren't affected too badly by the pandemic personally, apart from career wise. I hope 2023 means that we can look forward to some really really awesome stuff. Not only just for me, but for everybody."Chantal Herbert - Founder of Sister Shack CIC / Founder of Sister Sounds / DJ Awkward Black Woman- "2022 has just been beautiful chaos with all the things I have done so far, but I'm really proud of [our queer safe-space night] Bend & Shake. It seems to be a space that everyone has needed... And next year, 2023, I plan to make it even bigger and better."Lyn Killeen - Contemporary Fine Artist / Participatory Arts Facilitator- "I really am focusing on arts for health, and planning on starting a new programme which is therapeutic, and introducing some wellbeing techniques using instruments and workshops in nature, such as in forests on the beach, and I'm really excited about that."More about ArtyParti:Our website - www.artyparti.comTwitter - @ArtyPartiInstagram - @Arty_Parti_A Jay Sykes Media podcast Our supporters and funders:The ArtyParti podcast is made possible thanks to the support of our generous Patreon backers:Jo Howell - Photographic Artist based in SunderlandStephanie Smith - Visual Artist based in SunderlandArtyParti's live "Celebration" events and website are made possible thanks to funding from the Arts Council England & National Lottery Heritage Fund, through the Unlock strand of Sunderland Culture's Great Place scheme.

We discussed some of the challenges affecting artists as A.I. technologies improve - including copyright, ownership, and the potential loss of income that artists might face if numbers of commissions suffer. As a Digital Marketing Specialist, Phil leads an A.I. art competition named 'A.I.A.V.A.' - he's forged a supportive online community around this initiative, inviting digital artists to respond to regular prompts.
