Mike Cruz was very generous with his time and he gave me an education. I learned about food insecurity. I learned about a very high percentage the children not being raised by their parents have the highest probability for suffering food insecurity. I learned that some children don't get regular Lee said on the weekends. Mike taught me examples about how lack of food leads to bad behavior which makes the job educating children extremely difficult. Mike told me about a program at one of his schools. I must admit I went into this meeting with Mike Cruz with a very strong misconception. I had read a USA Today article and some other articles that talked about past due school lunches and how children were stigmatized by getting peanut butter and jelly sandwiches instead of the regularly scheduled lunch menu. I thought that was a big problem. While the school is responsible for a student's safety while they are at school, parents are responsible for a child's basic needs such as food, clothing, and shelter. Last night I spent an hour at the Casa Grande Neon Sign Park on 408 N. Sacaton St, Casa Grande, AZ 85122.  520-836-8744 Admission is free.The park pays tribute to the neon and classic signs that once graced the Casa Grande and Arizona business landscape.This is a perfect activity for an after-dinner stroll through recent history. Those nostalgic for simpler and optimistic times will enjoy this blast through the past of the '40s, '50s and '60s.“It’s hard to put into words what I believe this park will mean to the community,” said Rina Rien, director of Casa Grande Main Street. “I am optimistic and encouraged by the buzz being created surrounding the park and how we are already translating it into a strategic vision for revitalizing our downtown.”A joint project between Casa Grande Main Street and the city of Casa Grande Historic Preservation Commission, the new park features 14 signs that have been salvaged and restored.Among the signs at the park are:The Arizona Edison sign, which once hung on the building of the electric company’s downtown office. Archeologists have discovered evidence that the ancestral Sonoran Desert people who built the Casa Grande also developed wide-scale irrigation farming and extensive trade connections which lasted over a thousand years until about 1450 C.E. Archeologists call a site where there are earthen buildings, red on buff pottery, and extensive canals "Hohokam" but this is not the name of a tribe or a people. Years of misunderstanding have confused the ancestors of the O'Odham, Hopi, and Zuni people with the name Hohokam, which is not a word in any of their languages nor the name of a separate people. Padre Kino, Juan Bautista de Anza, and Stephen Kearney.The Casa Grande was abandoned around 1450 C.E. Since the ancestral Sonoran Desert people who built it left no written language behind, written historic accounts of the Casa Grande begin with the journal entries of Padre Eusebio Francisco Kino when he visited the ruins in 1694. In his description of the large ancient structure before him, he wrote the words "casa grande" (or "great house") which are still used today. More became known about the ruins with the later visits of Lt. Col. Juan Bautista de Anza's expedition in 1775 and Brig. Gen. Stephen Watts Kearny's military detachment in 1846. Subsequent articles written about the Casa Grande increased public interest. During the 1860s through the 1880's, more people began to visit the ruins with the arrival of a railroad line twenty miles to the west and a connecting stagecoach route that ran right by the Casa Grande. The resulting damage from souvenir hunting, graffiti, and outright vandalism raised serious concerns about the preservation of the Casa Grande. Casa Grande was constructed between AD 1200-1450 by the Native American Hohokam near Phoenix, Arizona.
