Emmaly is a nonprofit director in the agricultural nonprofit sector, specializing in urban agriculture and local food system initiatives in Iowa. Emmaly has been married for 21 years, and together with her partner, they are raising four incredible children, whose ages span from elementary school to college. Her personal journey of faith took a transformative turn as her daughters entered their teenage years. Watching them grow and approach adulthood led Emmaly to reevaluate her own spiritual experience and reimagine her connection to faith outside of traditional church structures. Emmaly finds her deepest spiritual connection in nature, particularly among trees and the open, rolling fields she works to protect and nurture. Grounded and pragmatic, Emmaly prefers workboots over flats, embodying her hands-on, system-based approach to both life and leadership. Through writing, she weaves her experiences with the land, family, and spirituality together. To choose the road less traveled takes emotional resilience. I liken self-differentiation to the road less traveled, one we have a hard time taking because we are tribal and communal by human nature. It can feel uncomfortable to share thoughts, ideas, decisions, etc. that are DIFFERENT than the group. The risk of losing your feeling of fitting in or belonging can be too high. We may tie our identity and/or the point we’re at in our journey (faith or otherwise) to those closest to us. When we see them at different points than us, it can feel uncomfortable. Perhaps it emphasizes that we are in different places or it might increase the “alone” factor, or worse we make it mean that we no longer belong. Listen to this episode to learn more about this important part of human development, including our faith development. _______________________________________________ Please help the podcast grow by following, leaving a 5 star review on Spotify or Apple podcasts and sharing with friends. Anita and her husband (Ben) have been active in the LDS church their entire lives. Six years ago their family's story had a "plot twist" when their oldest child came out as queer at the age of 18. This led to Anita's deconstruction and reconstruction of her faith so that she can stay connected to God and her faith, even when things are hard at church. Today, two of their kids are out as transgender or gender non-conforming as well as queer. Anita has been involved with Lift+Love as a group leader for the Parents of Transgender/Non-Binary Kids group since 2021. She has found strength as she has connected with other parents who understand the pain points that exist for families striving to stay engaged in the LDS faith and also supportive of their kids' identities. She believes very strongly that her first responsibility as a mother is to love her children the way that God loves them - fully and without reservation. "When we are young it’s normal and even expected that our faith, belief and practice looks quite alike among us. What happens when one matures physically, spiritually, emotionally, mentally, and tries to allow their personal growth to take the natural path that it wants to follow? It may take them in unexpected, new and different places - and by different, I mean from the “norm.” Sometimes when this happens, they are told 'no that’s wrong' and even shamed or ostracized for following the natural course (natural for them and their experience) of learning and growth. It weakens communities if and when we interfere with the natural course of things. If we ignore or discourage or try to stop differentiation of one’s faith development then we miss the bigger picture. We miss the whole point of growing faith organically, by instead trying to grow it by force, certainty, or one set prescribed path. We miss the beauty that is there to observe and that there are lessons to be had and discovered that will deepen and cement faith in ways not otherwise possible." -Meagan Skidmore Go here for offers mentioned in this episode: Unlocking Your Voice HYBRID GROUP registration. “Hypocrisy and self-deception proved to be far greater dangers than uncertainty.” B. McLaren, Faith After Doubt, page 28 This resonated 1000% with me when I read it. One must be in congruence with their personal integrity. It will literally make you ill if you do not. And so, leaning into one’s integrity, or one’s truth we go on with this journey of faith. Brian McLaren's four stages of faith has been the answer to prayer for many sojourner's on the path of their personal faith journey's. He has broken this concept of faith development down into stages much like psychologists have broken down human development into stages. In fact that was his inspiration.
