Episode 103: Night waking is normal…right?

Imagine this – your 6 month old baby wakes at least 5 times every night, sometimes very briefly and other times for up to 2 hours 😥 You’ve rocked and shooshed your baby for so long that your body aches every day. The minute your head hits the pillow your baby wakes again. In a state of desperation you open Instagram and there it is in big, bold font, with a picture of a peaceful, well rested mother. It reads: “It’s normal for babies to wake in the night”. Ughhh. 😒 In today’s episode, Dr Fallon & Dr Laura (PhDs, Sleep Practitioners) unpack this very toxic statement, because parents deserve better.  ☕️ Love our work? Buy us a coffee!  https://buymeacoffee.com/infant.sleep ❤️ Listen on Apple Podcasts https://loom.ly/zui5kX8 ❤️ Listen on Spotify https://loom.ly/ZuBk3N0 ❤️ Listen on Amazon Music https://loom.ly/ZsS9sTQ 🎥 Watch this episode on YouTube https://loom.ly/JhNkXPs ✅ Visit our clinic or join Sombelle for expert support with baby & toddler sleep & settling difficulties: https://loom.ly/RZeC0NA

Episode 98: 3 Factors to Reduce Night Waking

In older babies and toddlers, night waking is influenced by 3 key factors, (1)  how they settle to sleep, (2) the daily rhythm, and (3) motivating factors. If one of these 3 factors isn’t addressed, it’s likely night waking will continue to be a persistent problem. Success comes when all three factors have been addressed. In episode 98 of Brand New Little People, Dr Fallon & Dr Laura (PhDs, Sleep Practitioners) unpack the 3 factors that impact night waking, so you are your little one can enjoy restful nights.  ☕️ Love our work? Buy us a coffee! ❤️ Listen on Apple Podcasts https://loom.ly/zui5kX8 ❤️ Listen on Spotify https://loom.ly/ZuBk3N0 ❤️ Listen on Amazon Music https://loom.ly/ZsS9sTQfg, 🎥 Watch this episode on YouTube https://loom.ly/JhNkXPs ✅ Visit our clinic or join Sombelle for expert support with baby & toddler sleep & settling difficulties: https://loom.ly/RZeC0NA

We all dread the day it happens—your toddler suddenly starts trying to climb out of the cot, and it feels like game over for sleep. Well, good news: it doesn’t have to be. Episode 91: Rigid wake windows can worsen sleep

Rigid, age-based wake windows are splashed across the internet, promising the solution to all your baby’s sleep difficulties. But do they actually work? Mostly, no. 🥱 The majority of age-based schedules aim for more sleep than is typical for your baby’s age. 📉 They also assume that all babies of the same age need the exact same thing – which is a bit like assuming that all babies of the same age are the same height and weight! In this episode, Dr Fallon & Dr Laura (PhDs, Sleep Practitioners) unpack why following rigid age-based wake windows can do more harm to sleep than good.  ☕️ Love our work? Episode 87: Parental Presence at Bedtime

You might have worked really hard to build your child’s confidence falling asleep in their cot or bed at bedtime. But what happens if you still find yourself sitting in their room near their cot or bed, until they fall asleep? Some parents don’t mind this, but others find it difficult, especially if they have other children to get to bed, and for some, their children continue to wake overnight, wondering why their parent isn’t still sitting beside their bed, and insisting that they return. Cue parental exhaustion! If you want to reduce your presence at bedtime, using gentle methods, this episode is for you. Episode 86: Self-soothing behaviours

The term ‘self-soothing’ gets thrown around a lot on the internet, but what does it actually mean? In its simplest form, self-soothing refers to the behaviours humans use to calm themselves when feeling upset. For an adult this might mean meditation, deep breathing, or debriefing with a friend, and for a baby this could mean sucking their thumb or fingers, stroking their ears or nose, or rocking their head back and forth. There are a huge number of ways humans can self-soothe. You might have heard that it’s impossible for a child under the age of 3 years to self-soothe, but this isn’t quite true – even tiny newborns can show some self-soothing behaviours, like sucking their hands – however, it’s their capacity to self-soothe that is also tiny and takes time to develop – so we can’t expect too much, too soon. In episode 86 of Brand New Little People, Dr Fallon & Dr Laura (PhDs) dive deep in to self-soothing, to dispel some myths and help you to recognise your little one’s attempts to self-soothe. ☕️ Love our work? Episode 85: Strong-willed toddlers

Imagine if your toddler’s bedtime often took longer than 3 hours 😥 Imagine they refuse to sleep in their cot, will only fall asleep if breastfed, and every approach you’ve previously tried simply hasn’t ‘stuck.’ Sounds pretty awful doesn’t it? 😔 This week we received an email from Michelle, a parent who is currently battling this exact situation with her toddler. Michelle desperately wants her toddler to sleep in his cot, but is worried about how much he might push back against any changes. In this episode, you'll learn how to effectively manage tricky toddler bedtimes as Dr Fallon & Dr Laura (PhDs) explore the factors you need to be across, and the best approaches to get bedtime on track. ☕️ Love our work?
