As our hosts recover from their various holidays, we revisit our May 2023 interview with Kobus, BaT commenter and contributor extraordinaire. Randy and Kobus discuss his formative years at Kyalami in South Africa (including talking his way into a media pass for the 1969 and 1970 Nine Hours); his love of driving and racing his vintage Porsches; getting into vintage racing in a stock 356 Cabriolet during the pandemic; and acquiring his Sand Beige 912 racer, seen at tracks and events all over the Northeast, followed by a very historic Formula V car.The two go on to share in the beauty and danger of the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix in Schenley Park; their mutual admiration of the Goodwood Revival; their thoughts on Luftgekühlt; Kobus' work for the 356 Registry in print and online; and pre-war hillclimbs.Links for things mentioned in this episode:2:38 The 1969 Nine Hours of Kyalami and The 1970 Nine Hours of Kyalami9:22 Dispatches From Lime Rock: Kobus Gets His VSCCA License16:07 BaT Photographic Inspiration: Kobus Covers The Goodwood Revival16:22 Red Alfa Giulietta TI sedan on three wheelsGot suggestions for our next guest from the BaT community, One Year Garage episode, or (B)aT the Movies subject? Alex, Beck, and Zac sit down for the latest episode of One Year Garage our popular podcast game highlighting staff picks for the ultimate sports car, family hauler, truck, daily driver, and wild card from a given model year. This time it's 2012, and the crew revisit cultural moments such as The Audacity of Taupe, the Mayan calendar, and the top movies of the year, before game time. Spoiler: they then immediately hand Beck the lead and declare him the winner, perhaps jumping the gun just a tad. Also heard: the trio reveal the rest of their picks, discuss less-than-ideal motorcycle engineering, argue about Lexus colors, toss around nauseating phrases, lament the modern dearth of shooting brakes, relive the unfortunate gravity-aided demise of Zac's Cayman R, and share in collective McLaren confusion.Links for things mentioned in this episode:17:51 2012 Lexus LFA21:58 909-Mile 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG24:25 Ferrari 458 Model Page24:31 All 2012 cars listed on BaT24:37 14k-Mile 2012 Ford Fusion SEL27:08 2012 Cadillac CTS-V Wagons on BaT28:29 Ferrari FF Model Page30:42 2012 Acura TSX Sport Wagons on BaT33:14 14k-Mile 2012 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series34:11 32k-Mile 2012 Porsche Cayman R 6-Speed39:57 2012 Titan XD 4400 4×4 Camper Conversion41:57 2012 Cayenne 6-Speeds on BaT44:08 2012 Ford SVT Raptors on BaT47:42 DeLorean DMC-12-Style Hovercraft49:12 2012 Porsche 911 GT3 RSRGot suggestions for our next guest from the BaT community, One Year Garage episode, or (B)aT the Movies subject? Alex and Randy sit down to catch up and talk about a notable Success Story, the best roll bar this side of Durango, and an upcoming epic road trip for Alex and his son before a recap of Randy's recent trip to the UK for a special Grand Prixscreening, the NEC Classic Motor Show in Birmingham, and hot laps at Goodwood. The duo move on to Reliant Scimitars; early-'80s badge engineering; reliving family road trips to Texas that may or may not have actually occurred; sage car-buying advice that every one of us has ignored; the day's accidental automotive show-and-tell; perhaps the perfect combination of family heritage and first stick shift; and a brief but telling insight into why BaT is the way BaT is. close out by looking at their recent watchlists and Alex relates a secondhand anecdote that epitomizes Randy's ideal life.Links for things mentioned in this episode:0:59 BaT Auction Success Story: Cross-Country C1 Corvette7:14 Motorsport Magazine12:53 Harry's Garage on YouTube21:01 Triumph Acclaim on Wikipedia39:02 Done Really Right: 1969 Triumph GT639:21 1969 Triumph GT6+ Race Car 5-Speed44:19 Leyland FV4201 Chieftain Main Battle Tank and Stuart M5A1 Tank44:27 1995 Porsche 911 Carrera Speedster by Gunther Werks44:35 Porsche 993 911 (Non-Turbo/GT2) model page44:58 31k-Mile 1991 Dodge Stealth R/T Turbo 5-Speed45:00 1992 Volkswagen Corrado SLC VR6 5-Speed45:13 1977 Ferrari 400 GT45:30 27-Years-Owned, 2.0L-Equipped 1966 Porsche 912 Coupe 5-Speed Project45:37 1988 Land Rover Range Rover 40th Anniversary Edition46:07 1988 Audi 5000CS Turbo Quattro Avant 5-Speed46:36 9k-Mile 1989 Chevrolet Corvette Challenge Race Car46:40 63-Years-Family-Owned 1956 Ford Thunderbird46:56 1941 Graham Hollywood Supercharged Model 113Got suggestions for our next guest from the BaT community, One Year Garage episode, or (B)aT the Movies subject? In a BaT Podcast first that we'd love to make a regular feature, four of the crew gather at HQ to hash out one of our collective favorite car movies: none other, of course, than 1968's Bullitt with Steve McQueen. The crew start by establishing their various McQueen bona fides and history with the movie before talking about the evasive nature of the plot (and what, in fact, that plot might be); filming and financing details; background car spotting; San Francisco landmarks, both here and gone; razor sharp jaws; the sleep-inducing sections; regenerating hubcaps; the Lalo Schifrin score (or lack thereof, in key places); and of course, the most famous car chase in the movies. But they don't stop there - this movie has a lot more to cover, like several unintentional car stunts; Mopar-on-camera violence; gun-toting styles of late-'60s movie detectives; the film's sartorial choices; homages in later movies; and which of those movies should make it onto the list of future podcast subjects. Please help us extend a warm welcome to one of BaT's favorite designers, teachers, sellers, and all-around renaissance men: Raffi Minasian, known in these halls as @raffi. He talks with Alex about his father's "trial by fire" mechanical training program; the roots of his obsession with car design; learning to drive in a 1952 Crosley (with doors!); human- and object-based empathy; a novel way to stay calm in the BaT comments; accidentally becoming a star seller for other people's cars; the odd calmness that 1,200 live BaT auctions can provide; his unorthodox, Pegaso-centric introduction to Art Center College of Design, his future alma mater; his 16 years in die cast design at Franklin Mint; insights into shifts in popular culture; embracing the ridiculous; and the Beetle as a gateway drug. The pair close out talking about Raffi's efforts in nontraditional, hands-on education for young children, his recent foray into TV writing and acting, and his numerous, fascinating upcoming projects.Links for things mentioned in this episode:1:05 Listings and Car Stories Contributed by Raffi 9:18 39k-Mile 1985 Ford Mustang SVO13:47 1-of-52 1967 Ghia 450SS18:58 Car Stories: Raffi’s 1953 Pegaso Z-102–The “Thrill” of a Lifetime27:28 Franklin Mint 1970 Datsun 240Z28:35 BaT Limited Edition Hot Rod and BaT Limited Edition 1972 Chevrolet K10 Tow Rig and Trailer Combo31:36 1958 Chris-Craft 26′ Continental Hardtop31:50 Coronado Boats on BaT54:32 It's a Lot TV pilot trailer59:52 1990 Yugo Cabrio 5-SpeedGot suggestions for our next guest from the BaT community or One Year Garage episode? Alex and Beck sit down to catch up with Matt Schiller, CEO of Snappr—the professional-photos-anywhere agency that supports our BaT Plus listing photography service. The Australian Bay Area transplant talks about starting the company in Sydney with no intention of moving into the automotive space; assures us that even CEOs have excuses for looking at BaT instead of working; reviews the importance of accurate and numerous photos for large purchases made over the internet; and goes into some very telling stats gleaned from Snappr's seven-year relationship with BaT (the numbers don't lie: better photos sell more cars for higher prices!).The trio talk about the importance of keeping AI out of automotive sales photography, and also keeping a creator in the loop when using generative AI for non-automotive applications. All three are pilots at various levels, so fair warning: the tail(dragger) end of the conversation descends quickly into airplane madness.Links for things mentioned in this episode:37:10 Aircraft and related auctions on BaTGot suggestions for our next guest from the BaT community or One Year Garage episode? Alex has a lively interview with none other than Donald Osborne (@zagato67 on BaT): ASA accredited senior appraiser, TV personality, principal of Automotive Valuation Services, and consulting director for the Audrain Automobile Museum. They talk about BaT's start as an amalgamation of interesting POSes; maximum impact for minimal outlay; the similarities between a car for sale and the ideal political candidacy; sage advice for sellers on BaT and elsewhere; the art of self-editing; the right price for the wrong car; multitasking, the car guy way; ignoring one's own hard-earned advice; cars as an investment in happiness; driving Derek Drinkwater's Le Monstre replica at Goodwood; and adventures in Sicily on the old Targa Florio route. It's time once again for your favorite game—The One-Year Garage! This time we're back for one of the best automotive years imaginable: 1965, by special request of Sue Counselman from Vintage Underground. In addition to the crew's picks for their preferred sports car, family hauler, truck/4x4, daily driver, and wild card, we have Randy's hot take on the second-series GTO; a flippy-floppy driving video in Hawaii; Alex's ideal Eichler-dwelling 1965 self; what constitutes too many windshields; deep pulls from the Brits and Germans; a sobering trivia tidbit from Le Mans; Alfa Romeo naming conventions; Kardex friction, and (of course)...more!Links for things mentioned in this episode:4:04 Ferrari 250 GTO drive review. Randy interviews comedy writer and podcaster Spike Feresten, host of the wildly popular Spike's Car Radio podcast. They talk about sharing insider car craziness with the masses, the endless learning curve of car collecting, Spike's upcoming trip to Newport for the Audrain Concours (and mansion peeping), grading the Ineos Grenadier, what your Bentley convertible says about you, his Bronco Heritage and vintage Range Rover obsessions, his recent charity auctions, and celebrity lurkers in the BaT comments. The conversation moves on into playing the advice columnist on Patreon, the hypercarification of Monterey Car Week, what to do when your teenager starts driving (and flying or riding motorcycles!), and the ongoing rebirth of Willow Springs.Links for things mentioned in this episode:4:47 Audrain Newport Concours & Motor Week 202511:03 Ford Bronco U725 BaT model page16:49 Spike Feresten’s 1966 Triumph Bonneville T120R for Charity BaT listing17:40 Collection of Sheffield ALLSPORT Diver 1 Spike’s Car Radio Limited Edition Watches for Charity BaT listing22:30 Spike's Car Radio on Patreon34:25 Porsche 911 S/T Auctions BaT search40:28 Willow Springs Reimagined, October 11 Got suggestions for our next guest from the BaT community or One Year Garage episode? Alex, Randy, and special guest Beck sit down to shoot the breeze. They talk about buying a 100k-mile German car from New York, Beck's upcoming auction of the German car it replaced, and the inevitable German car oil on Alex's garage floor. Everyone has hair-raising brake failure stories and opinions on "how much hot rod" is appropriate for driving 2,000 miles. They talk spats vs. skirts and other British crossover terms, drive slow cars on the Interstate, and give brief a review of BaT White Glove service. The trio wrap by discussing favorite recent sales, marveling at the brand new 2k Sellers Club, and dabbling in some popular Questions of the Week about road trip stops, oil change disasters, and stick shiftsLinks for things mentioned in this episode:1:10 2014 Mercedes-Benz E350 4MATIC Wagon BaT listing18:56 1939 Ford Deluxe Coupe BaT listing20:42 28-Years-Owned, 302-Powered 1950 Ford Custom Deluxe Club Coupe BaT listing20:52 1950 Mercury Eight Convertible Grease Movie Car BaT listing25:53 1964 Porsche 904 Carrera GTS, 1968 Porsche 910, and 1,800-Mile 2005 Porsche Carrera GT BaT listings27:00 1959 BMW 507 Series II BaT listing27:53 392 Hemi Stroker-Powered 1930 Ford Model A “Wade Coupe” 4-Speed BaT listing28:27 Original-Owner 2012 Lexus LFA , Arrow Blue 2024 Porsche 911 GT3 RS Weissach, and 2024 Porsche 911 Dakar BaT listings30:23 The 2k Seller’s Club Roundtable, Featuring Wob, 1600veloce, and 911r BaT storyGot suggestions for our next guest from the BaT community or One Year Garage episode? Alex and Randy talk about The Bridge IX, last weekend's refreshingly unique collection of three separate car events in the Hamptons. Randy's first time on Long Island could not have found a more fitting venue than among the ghosts of one of America's first road courses. They cover the dark reasons behind said courses' creation, the curated garden party atmosphere of the main Saturday event on the (former road, now golf) course, run-ins with great cars including a fabulously rare Volvo and a breathtaking array of Ferrari 308s, and the dichotomies of small, well-to-do East Coast villages. They move on to Day Three, wherein BaT and top seller 1600veloce co-sponsored the followup Cars and Coffee in the town of Bridgehampton; highlights from the morning included a dry-aged Mustang and too many other cars to list.Speaking of too many great cars to list, the pair finish up with a rapid-fire perusal of their current BaT watchlists—it's an exciting time for the site, so follow along !14:06 Volvo P1900 BaT features28:15 1969 Ferrari 365 GTC BaT auction30:25 331-Powered 1965 Ford Mustang 5-Speed32:37 18k-Mile 1988 BMW M338:59 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 42939:05 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 42940:13 1913 Stutz 4B Bearcat40:55 1964 Porsche 904 Carrera GTS41:05 1941 Tatra T8742:38 427 FE-Powered 1962 Ford Galaxie 500 Holman-Moody-Style Race Car 4-Speed43:15 1992 Volkswagen Jetta GTX 16V 5-Speed and 1992 Volkswagen Jetta GLI 16V44:01 7k-Mile 1969 Plymouth Barracuda Coupe 44044:20 Saddam Hussein–Seized 1958 Bentley S1 Continental Drophead Coupe by Park Ward44:32 Ex-Works 1961 Jaguar XKE Series I 3.8 Coupe46:32 Edsel Ford II’s 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT50046:36 Ex–Bruce Willis, 327-Powered 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air Nomad and Ex–Bruce Willis, L71-Powered 1967 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible 4-Speed46:44 1971 Ferrari 365 GTS/4 Daytona Spyder47:35 1971 Monteverdi High Speed 375/448:57 331 Cadillac-Powered Ford Model A 5-Window Coupe 5-Speed51:19 Macchinissima III
Randy visits the legendary Bruce Meyer's storied car collection in Los Angeles. They cover his early discovery of fellow enthusiasts at BaT; car collecting in the DNA; being born on the perfect day in history; his start as a corner paper boy; flipping and racing motorcycles while in college at Berkeley; buying his first Porsche via European Delivery in 1961; his "first, fastest, or prettiest" collection mentality; a predilection for race cars built by hot rodders; his lifetime of Cobra ownership, leading to acquisition of the very first production example; memories from 1960s Lake Tahoe, including the 327-powered Gullwing he picked up from the back of a wooden boat shop; watching out for "air cars"; his deep involvement as founding chairman of the Petersen Automotive Museum; and his love of the LA lowrider community.Follow along! Alex sits down with Randy and friend of BaT Jim Huff, furniture merchant and connoisseur of the Neue Klasse, to talk about racing at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion during this year's recent edition of Monterey Car Week. Both Randy and Huff drove in the Pre-Reunion and the main event later in the week; Huff describes mixing it up with Giulias and GTAs in the saloon class in his BMW 1800 Ti, while Randy and his Mustang held their own with more experienced racers amongst a crop of other animals: Cobras, Jags, and Tigers. Heartfelt recommendations come from all to spend time at the track if you ever find yourself on the Peninsula for Car Week (it's where it's at!). The duo "lightly threaten" to expand their efforts to the Pacific Northwest and (well) beyond, talk about developing camaraderie from on-track observations and paddock interactions, describe "helmet-yelling out of stoke," theorize about the ultimate old-school tow rig, take a brief aside to mention the the wooden boat of our dreams, and wrap up by recounting the recent 50th annual SAAC meeting at Sonoma.Links for things mentioned in this episode:07:18 7 generations of IROC race cars you’ll see at Monterey this year Classic Motorsports08:17 Exclusive Tour: F1’s 75-Year Display at Rolex Monterey with Zak Brown YouTube09:15 IROC Race Cars BaT09:24 Pontiac Firebird IROC Race Car BaT14:39 Presenting the 2025 Mohr Imports Car Week Collection: Postcards from Monterey BaT29:02 User cfujgo BaT32:05 1968 BMW 1600-2 Race Car BaT34:12 Lake Tahoe Concours d’Elegance Best-In-Class-Winning 1955 Chris-Craft 21’ Cobra BaT36:40 SVO Mustangs BaTGot suggestions for our next guest from the BaT community or One Year Garage episode? Levy; the various on-track attitudes (and interpretations of vintage spec) from event to event; the experience of driving in the race car parade from the track to downtown Elkhart Lake; Spotted Cow; the next tracks on the list; exhausted radiators; some notable names they'll be sharing Laguna Seca with this weekend; and great memories from Malibu Grand Prix. The group close out with several recent collections from the site, hard-to-find hardtops, and other watchlist highlights from this very exciting and high-volume time at BaT. Zac finds a way to briefly resurface his favorite car, the Toyota Solara, before they talk about the transformative experience (and innate patriotism) of the traditional Friday night race car parade into Elkhart Lake. The pair wrap up with some of the most interesting cars recently listed on BaT.Links for listings mentioned in this episode:28:23 4,800-Mile 2001 Acura Integra Type R30:11 1993 Honda NSX-R30:21 2010 Alfa Romeo TZ3 Stradale Zagato36:05 F80 M3-Swapped 2015 BMW 328i Sports Wagon 6-Speed37:39 Ex-Gucci 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SL 4-Speed39:21 50-Years Owned 1951 Vincent Rapide Series C40:17 Ex–Marty Dickerson, 352-Powered 1957 Ford Ranchero41:09 1996 Toyota Mega Cruiser High Roof42:26 Japanese-Market 8-Kilometer 1987 Honda VFR750R RC3042:36 1966 Dodge Charger 426 Hemi 4-Speed43:00 2002 Chevrolet Camaro Coupe B4C Special Service Package45:03 1977 Ferrari 308 GTB45:07 Twin-Supercharged 427-Powered 1986 Ford Mustang GT Hatchback “ProFox” 6-Speed45:16 RoW 1992 Porsche 911 Carrera 2 Coupe 5-Speed45:38 Ardun 296-Powered ’32 Ford Highboy Roadster48:10 1970 Shelby Mustang GT350 FastbackGot suggestions for our next guest from the BaT community or One Year Garage episode? In this latest installment of our popular One-Year Garage game, Alex, Beck, and podcast newcomer Cameron reveal their favorite cars, trucks, and wild cards of 1997, but not before explaining to young Cam the horrors of the Star Wars prequels he grew up with. Also: Schumacher and Villeneuve; the WALKinshaw Porsche WSC-95 at Le Mans; all three are old enough to be irritated by the vagaries of Google AI; wishful thinking about the availability of a manual transmission in the US-model Volvo 850R; a burnout instead of friendly wave; and a wilder wild card than usual.Links for items discussed in this episode:14:38 Current live listings from 199718:46 Volvo 850R21:47 One of the Rarest and Most Gas-Guzzling Shooting Brakes Can Be Yours25:39 BMW E36 M3/4/529:21 1988 BMW M3 Evolution II30:40 4,800-Mile 2001 Acura Integra Type R33:26 Mr. Bean’s Twice-Wrecked Daily-Driver McLaren F134:12 Triumph Italia35:12 Porsche 993 Turbo Model Page42:46 150-Mile 1993 Ford F-150 SVT Lightning44:52 Toyota Mega Cruiser47:44 Porsche 993 911 Model Page50:36 BMW 850 CSi52:02 Euro 45k-Kilometer 1997 Ferrari 550 Maranello54:18 Porsche 911 GT1 Strassenversion: Road to Track and Back57:28 26-Years-Owned 1997 Aviat Husky A-11:00:38 1997 Honda Accord British Touring CarGot suggestions for our next guest from the BaT community or One Year Garage episode?
