Support Me on Ko-fi Liv is in an interesting language experience right now. She grew in New York City using Cantonese with her Southern Chinese mother and some Mandarin Chinese with her Taiwanese father. She then picked up Spanish and English in her diverse NYC environment. She has traveled extensively and has learned a few more languages along the way. But it is now, while living and working in Shanghai, China, that she is faced with a myriad of language AND cultural obstacles that she feels the most challenged by. Liv started an intensive Mandarin Chinese summer course the day after this interview in order to face these challenges head on. We have the pleasure of talking to her before and after this course. The after conversation will be in the Fall season.  Liv's website: http://www.thatlivlife.com   You can follow all of our projects here: https://stephfuccio.weebly.com/ Would love to know what you think about this episode!   Support Me on Ko-fi   This is a recommendation episode, where I tell you more about episodes from my other podcasts that came out this week AND some flashbacks to other episodes from the other three podcasts in my four podcast world. This episode is the exact same on all of the podcasts it is on this week, so if you are crazy enough to listen to more than one of my pods, you only need to listen to one of these.  A few money announcements first. I am starting a Beginning Expat Podcasters Online Two Hour Workshop this Fall. Email me to get more information, stephfuccio(gmail.com) . I am also selling my voice! No, really, If you or anyone you know needs a voiceover talent, please contact me at https://www.voices.com/actors/stephfuccio.  I am NOT charging for promo spots in the three interview podcasts: Virtual, Scripts and Bookish but am offering them for FREE (inspiration: Odd Dad Out Podcast, thanks Adam) to Content Creators that I like AND that fit into that particular episode’s content. Enough about money, let’s get to the audio goodness.   This week we have a new episode of Creatively Complicated Podcast with my Co-Host, Writer Summer Rylander. In this podcast we dive into the messiness of our own creative process. In this episode, we focus on doing more and doing less, essentially realizing that we need to change creative productivity places. Does tasking out your creative process help you do more and improve your craft?  Going back to previous episodes of Changing Scripts, I want to highlight another Writer, Jeremy Tiang. Jeremy was kind enough to sit down with me when he was visiting Shanghai last year. To clarify, Jeremy is a  Writer, Translator and Playright; words are what Jeremy Tiang uses to share his ideas about the world and all of its ambiguity. In his prose he addresses issues of identity, culture, and the boundaries of what we think these things mean. His upbringing in Singapore was multicultural and yet it was not. We primarily explore Jeremy’s language experiences from early childhood to the present day. But those cultural tones are impossible to remove from language, so we did not even try. Another flashback episode I’d like to highlight is on the Virtual Expats Podcast. A former student of mine from Hanoi, Vietnam and an Artist now living in my birthplace, New York City, Anh Ta, in episode 66. We explore how her geographic movement from Vietnam to the U.S. has affected her online experience. Anh is an Artist with a strong online presence that she carefully curated for both professional and personal usage.  By the way, if all this talk about podcasts is inspiring you to make your own, you can get a free month of Podbean hosting service by using this promo code: https://www.podbean.com/virtualexpats Bookish Expats podcast has a brand new episode starting off Season 4 next Friday.   Support Me on Ko-fi   In this episode, we chat with Angela, a Canadian who went to China for the first time in 2006, which is where she met her husband. She left China and returned, as so many expats do. Lucky for me, she came back to China in 2010 and worked at the same school teaching Academic English to students who were about to study abroad. Angela’s relationship to languages and language learning is the complete opposite to mine: before learning Mandarin Chinese she fluently learned French, Spanish and Finnish, with a strong emphasis on speaking the language. She is now a teacher in Canada and is able to help International students from China and other countries, adapt to their new learning and academic life in a small study group environment as well. A sound note: Angela’s adorable baby boy joined us for some of this conversation. I have edited out the vast majority of the sounds that overpowered our voices but there are a few soft baby noises left. If you are someone who will be annoyed by such sounds, please feel free to listen to the first 30 minutes of the podcast (before Morgan joined us) and then return next month for another episode of Changing Scripts. Thank you.      Support Me on Ko-fi Nine Years Ago Joshua Ogden-Davis left graduate school in Texas, moved to China and taught himself Chinese. He is now a Mandarin Chinese Translator, does audio and video production in multiple languages, and is a Puppeteer. In this Changing Scripts podcast episode we dig into Josh’s fuller language story, including this switch from English to Mandarin Chinese as well as his experiences with Spanish, German and English from his beforetime. We learn that although Josh was good at and liked learning aspects of grammatical knowledge growing up, it was not until he was able to simultaneously learn and immediately use Mandarin Chinese that he understood the importance of motivation, activation and fluency over accuracy. Josh shares his hilarious Chinese language experiences from taxi rides where he was asked some pretty intimate details about his genitalia AND his own appearance on a local Chinese dating show. He admits that he spends his time in the space in between English and Chinese languages and ponders if that could be called a “third culture language (TCL)”.      Support Me on Ko-fi In this Changing Scripts podcast episode we chat with Lotta, a Finnish college student who lived in Shanghai, China between High School and University. During part of that time she took intensive Chinese language courses. Lotta has continued with her Chinese language learning even after returning to Finland by using TV shows and other media until she can take more language classes at her university. In this chat, Lotta shares with us her intensive Mandarin Chinese classroom experience in Shanghai, how she used the language outside of the classroom and how Mandarin Chinese compares to the handful of other languages she has learned and used in her life thus far. Lotta’s mother, Pia, was a guest on the Expat Rewind Podcast last year, where shared her first impressions of Shanghai via a blog post she wrote after moving here from Finland. Hi Pia!      Support Me on Ko-fi In the Changing Scripts podcast episode, we talk to Taylor, an American Marketing Professional who grew up with a strong language learning curiosity. Mandarin Chinese was one of her first language loves and one that she has kept in contact with. I am using people analogies  because Taylor used them in the interview and it is simply a brilliant way to see the time, energy and commitment that it takes not only to learn a language but to maintain it over the years as well. We also talked about her other language encounters, food that came with the languages she learned, her favorite language learning YouTube channels and so much language geeky more. Taylor was one of the first people I met on Twitter in the very supportive #Chinese language learning world and I am forever grateful for her encouragement. Thanks Taylor!   In accompanying Changing Scripts YouTUBE video I dive deeper into two aspects of Taylor’s interview: 1. Her languages as family member analogy and how it relates to my own language learning 2. Her desire to learn Ancient Chinese Literature and my own desire to learn slangish modern Mandarin Chinese so I can read social media posts online. I love how different and personal language learning can be and how people with such different goals can still learn from each other in the process.      Support Me on Ko-fi In the Podcast episode, we talked to Tanya Crossman, author of Misunderstood The Impact of Growing Up Overseas in the 21st Century  about her experiences learning and using Mandarin Chinese since she was a teenager. Tanya has a deep connection both to Chinese culture and language but her language story does not stop there. It also includes the languages and dialects she was exposed to growing up in different countries, studying 12 languages thus far, dreaming in “the language that is contextually appropriate” and her love of learning language scripts. Tanya’s insights into the cultural aspects of Mandarin Chinese are as clear as can be, even for someone not familiar with Mandarin Chinese at all. A special thank you to Mo Sibyl from the More Sibyl Podcast. It was her episode with Tanya that got us connected. If you’d like to know more about Tanya’s Third Culture Kid history or research, this is a great episode to listen to. In the accompanying YouTUBE video,https://youtu.be/cvpOaGwxFMk, I dive deeper into two aspects of Tanya’s interview: 1. At the end of every interview I ask the guest what question I should ask future Changing Scripts guests. Tanya added this question: “How did you learn the emotional part of a language?” In this YouTube video, I reach back into my language teaching experience to remember if I helped my students to do this at all.   2. Out of Tanya’s 12 languages there are a number of different scripts that she has learned. I am in awe with this because I am still struggling to read AND understand my first new script, the hanzi characters of Mandarin Chinese. Learning this new script has made me really understand the difference between reading a word or phrase and understanding what it means.  This video was filmed while I was walking around Minhang Cultural Park in a Korean neighborhood in Shanghai, China. THE NEXT Changing Scripts PodTube will be published on Tue, April 27th.      Support Me on Ko-fi In this episode we continue our conversation from episode 8 with Eric Olander about his 33 year Mandarin Chinese language learning experience. Eric is a Journalist, Blogger, Media Executive, and Co-Founder and Managing Editor of the China Africa Project which includes the China in Africa Podcast, which he co-hosts weekly with Cobus Van Staden. Last time we chatted with Eric in episode 8 he shared his controversial learning methods but this time we dig into more of the cultural side of the Mandarin Chinese. 2019-02-0102:29

Just a quick announcement about Changing Scripts Podcast, YouTube channel and how they connect. Changing Scripts has been converted into a PodTube. What's a PodTube? It's a project that has a podcast and a YouTube channel with a common theme. PODcast + YouTUBE = PodTube. What this means: -The interviews will be on the Podcast ONLY -My learning Mandarin Chinese updates and other projects will be on the YouTube channel ONLY And never the two shall meet. I would appreciate it if you would take this quick 2 minute Listener Survey. Tentative 2019 Schedule: January, February, March -Biweekly learning updates on the Changing Scripts YouTube channel April & May -Two months of interviews on the Changing Scripts Podcast. Expect at least 4-5 interviews during each month. June to December -Repeat the above schedule Would love to know what you think about this episode!
