We've reached the end of yet another season of 50 mm: A Scarlet Media Lens! With life slowly going back to normal, we thought it'd be a good time to reflect on some of the good things we've taken out of the last year. We hope this will be the last time we talk about filmmaking under quarantine. For our finale this week, we return to our discussion about the future of film, TV, and media as the pandemic comes to a close, looking at our favorite works produced under Covid-19 guidelines and how it has changed our creative vision and mindset of future projects. And, as it is the last episode of the season, we take stock of our work on 50 mm, what we have learned, and how it has helped us grow.
Film is a beloved form of entertainment for just about everyone, and while its purpose is to entertain, all films have some sort of meaning behind every aspect from their dialogue to costumes, and even camera angles. Directors use these subtle hints to insert deeper messages into their work that you can find if you look closely. This week we take a deep dive into the Oscar nominated film One Night in Miami to analyze these hidden meanings in detail. We discuss how director Regina King uses camera angles to portray how characters are feeling, how the costume designer uses the seemingly simple costumes to reveal character development, and more! Finally, don’t miss our Oscar-nominated film recommendations before awards night this weekend! 3After over a year of working, learning, and basically living online—- how we stream content and the experiences on-demand services offer have gone through some big changes! This week we take a deep dive into streaming, then and now— thinking about how streaming services have evolved and how our entertainment experiences have (or haven’t) changed. We tackle the emergence of streaming-exclusive content, the popularity of Twitch, and streaming service FAILS— as well as thinking about the future of our beloved movie theatres as they strive to co-exist with streaming. On-Set Etiquette

Being on set can seem completely different each time! You might be shooting in a studio where everyone seems to know each other, or on location with a crew working together for the first time. The shoot may be large and complex, or small with a skeleton crew. But across all sets, it is always important to make a good impression, look after your responsibilities, and most importantly— avoid causing any issues! In this episode, we talk over some do's and don'ts of being on set with Scarlet Media Manager Megan Dodson, and we also welcome back our studio and professional services manager, Randy Cangre, to get his advice on on-set etiquette.  Tune in to find out about our on-set pet peeves and get some tips on how to make the most of your first time on set! Hear us break down our favorite media classes, the best qualities in a professor, and which classes we wish we could take at Rutgers. In this episode, we welcome former Scarlet Media member, Madhu, back to the podcast! Madhu was instrumental in creating the first season of 50mm (you may recognize her voice in the outro!). We also talk about our evolving goals and how they have changed during our educational journeys.  In this episode, we use two acronyms: FIGS and SCI.  For those who are not familiar, FIGS stands for First Year Interest Group Seminars, a program where Senior Rutgers students act as peer instructors to first-year students. SCI stands for the School of Communication and Information. We're back for Season 3! With spring break behind us but the spring season just beginning, what better time to revisit our goals for 2021 and for the spring semester? Halfway through the semester, we are still learning and working remotely but with hope for change in the coming summer and fall as vaccine rollout begins!  Recorded in February, four Scarlet Media team members (including our newest member, Andrew!) got together to discuss short term and long term academic and career goals as we continue our studies and growth primarily online. We also take some time to reflect on how the pandemic has changed or reshaped our goals, and how we plan to stick to these goals moving forward! We are very excited to bring you today’s episode! October 15th is the last day of Latinx Heritage Month, so we thought this was the perfect opportunity to talk to some of the creators behind the recently rebooted and now Rutgers-based show, Images/Imagenes. Randy Cangre is the manager of the Rutgers iTV Studio and professional production services. And Alice Hernandez works at the Office of the Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs. Both Alice and Randy have been crucial members of the team producing the Latinx-centric show. We were thrilled to get a chance to talk to them about what it takes to create a show like Images/Imagenes as well as their perspectives on Latinx Hertiage Month and the future of representation for the Latinx community.
