Vanessa Nazario was born in Puerto Rico and raised in Trenton, NJ. She has worked in the field of Community Development, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for over 27 years. In early 2021, she joined Memorial Healthcare System in Hollywood, FL as Director of DEI to create and lead the System’s inaugural diversity, health equity, and inclusion strategy and manage Language Interpretation Services. Vanessa, through her leadership, helped secure the System’s first Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s Healthcare Equality Index; signed two national pledges: CEO Action in Diversity and Inclusion and American Hospital Association’s #123 for Equity Pledge. In June 2022, she was promoted to Corporate Director, Chief Diversity Officer to further MHS’s commitment to DEI. Over her career, Vanessa has been recognized by several organizations for her leadership including South Florida Business Wealth’s Diversity Executive Leadership award; DEIB Health Consortium’s Top Healthcare Diversity Officer; Diversity Global Magazine 2022 Top 15 Champions of Diversity; and Hallandale Beach Chamber of Commerce’s 2022 Excellence in Diversity and Inclusion Award. Vanessa received her MBA from Rider University in Lawrenceville, NJ and has a master’s in science degree from Southern New Hampshire University. She completed a Non-Profit Management Certificate from Seton Hall University and is certified as a Diversity Executive (CDE) from the Institute for Diversity Certification. She is currently completing an Executive Leadership program at Cornell University. A Louisville, KY native, Dr. Mary E. Fleming, completed her undergraduate degree at Xavier University of Louisiana, medical degree at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Meharry Medical College.  Due to her interests in eradicating health inequities and improving healthcare for the underserved, she matriculated to Harvard Medical School as a Commonwealth Fellow in Minority Health Policy where she obtained a MPH. She practiced as a generalist in a Norristown, PA for four years before deciding to transition to be a full-time locum tenens physician.  In this capacity, she has worked in several states across the country.  This practice model also allowed her to volunteer in Mutomo, Kenya for six months. Currently, she works clinically in Baltimore, MD, Norway, ME and for Cayaba Care, a maternal health start-up, in Philadelphia, PA. In addition, she consults as a medical expert reviewer, physician editor and leads a non-profit, Reede Scholars.  As President, she develops strategies for collective action to address health equity and social justice.  In 2021 she became Director of the Leadership Development to Advance Equity in Health Care Program in the ECPE department at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Join us as we have a conversation about the intersection of dentistry and DEI with Dr. Sharon Harrell, Chief Diversity Officer at FirstHealth of the Carolinas. Dr. Sharon Nicholson Harrell joined FirstHealth of the Carolinas, a comprehensive, not-for-profit healthcare network based in Pinehurst, North Carolina, in October 1998 as the inaugural director of dental care. Since then, FirstHealth Dental Care has provided comprehensive dental care to over 30,000 underserved children up to age 21, and the centers have received national attention as models for delivery of care to low-income populations. Dr. Harrell received her dental degree from the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry, where she also serves as an adjunct professor, and she completed an Advanced General Dentistry Residency at the University of Maryland Dental School. She attained her master’s in public health degree from the University of North Carolina Gillings School of Global Public Health and has achieved Fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry, the Pierre Fauchard Academy, the International College of Dentists, and the Academy of Dentistry International. Never one to be afraid of being the “first,” in January 2021, Dr. Harrell was named FirstHealth of the Carolina’s inaugural chief diversity officer, where her job is to promote and foster an inclusive culture. Dr. Harrell’s professional activities include having served as a member of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Leaders Group co-sponsored by the NC Healthcare Association and the NC Area Health Education organization. She was also honored to participate in the NC Association of Free & Charitable Clinics Health Equity Task Force and was selected as the 2020 recipient of the FirstHealth Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Leadership Award. She is a current member of the Society for Diversity. Dr. Harrell earned a Certificate in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Workplace from the University of South Florida Muma College of Business in May 2021. She was credentialed as a Certified Diversity Executive in December 2021. Dr. Harrell resides in Pinehurst with her husband, Michael. They are the proud parents of one son, Brandon. Gain insights into how her experience of feeling othered pushed her into a career of diversity, equity, and inclusion! Dr. LaKeisha Thorpe spent 16 years as a higher education administrator and instructor and has spent the better part of a decade researching, teaching, and presenting on diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging and social justice issues. Dr. Thorpe has taught college courses on cultural and racial theories, womanist and feminist theories, and pop culture and arts-based research methods. She is passionate about social justice, cultural humility, and a transdisciplinary approach to the navigation of transcultural spaces.  Her doctoral research is squarely grounded in the narratives surrounding food habits, food pathways, and their importance to our cultural identities. Her doctoral work, an arts-based research project, theorizes what might happen if we became the culture and ethnicity associated with the food we ingested. Dr. Thorpe is dedicated to ideologies that celebrate differences and is dedicated to creating space for uncomfortable conversations. Join us as we have a conversation about going from working as a CPA to leading the creation and deployment of Southwest's award-winning DEI strategy and pivoting into equity in beauty then water with Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer at Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, Liji Thomas. Liji began her career lobbying on Capitol Hill for an increase in housing for low-income women and children. In 2005, Liji joined Countrywide as a Project Manager and quickly rose through the ranks to become Assistant Vice President of Compliance and Risk Management. In this role, she oversaw compliance and risk assessment in Countrywide’s offshore operations and authored Countrywide’s Model for Offshore Compliance, a cross-functional, global, risk-based approach to the company’s compliance efforts. In 2008, Liji joined the Internal Audit Department of Southwest Airlines. During her time in Internal Audit, Liji led the company’s first Capitalization of Labor Audit and published an article advancing thought leadership in the space in the 2010 issue of Internal Auditor magazine. She then assumed a role as Manager of Business Strategy, implementing new business initiatives impacting over 3,600 individuals. These initiatives included strategies to increase revenue, improve customer experience and realize process efficiencies. In the first six months of 2012, Liji impacted revenue generation in excess of $40 million. As a testament to her leadership, Liji Thomas was shoulder-tapped to help build diversity and inclusion efforts for Southwest Airlines. In this role, she informed all aspects of diversity and inclusion for the nation's largest domestic airline and helped align Southwest Airlines culture with an award-winning diversity and inclusion strategy. Liji then led diversity and inclusion efforts for both Southern California Edison, an investor-owned public utility, as well as Beautycounter, a high-growth clean beauty and cosmetics company, before being named the inaugural Chief Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Officer for the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, the largest supplier of treated water in the United States, responsible for delivering water to 19 million residents across Southern California. In her current role, Liji oversees workforce development efforts, business outreach, community engagement and the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Council, consisting of representation from ten (10) employee resource groups and five (5) labor unions, and seeks to strengthen the organization’s commitment to equity and inclusion across all stakeholder groups. Liji is married and is the proud mom of two girls. In her spare time, Liji contributes to various charitable and civic causes. She is a Former Jesuit Volunteer and a 1998 graduate of Vanderbilt University. Kevin Frick is a professor at the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School with joint appointments in the School of Medicine and Bloomberg School of Public Health. At Carey, Frick has taught microeconomic foundations for managerial decision-making, healthcare financing, and frameworks for analyzing healthcare markets. Frick studied health policy and administration as an undergraduate at Penn State, which he followed with graduate training in economics and health services research at the University of Michigan. In 1996, he joined the faculty of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He moved to a leadership position at the Carey Business School in 2013 and returned to exclusively a faculty role in 2021. Much of Frick’s research has focused on measuring costs associated with diseases or measuring the cost-effectiveness of new treatments, care systems, or community-based interventions. His most frequent area of focus is public and private eye care.  In addition, he has specialized in linking peer-reviewed research from public health and medical journals with the information business leaders need to make decisions about companies that operate in the real-world marketplace. He works with the LGBTQ+ community, among others, at JHU to create a safe space for all.
