Each Sunday morning can be pretty ominous and in more ways than one. It's nerve wracking and fills you with dread. You hear a buzz. It's your iPhone. Through squinted eyes you pick up your phone and quickly find yourself overcome with shame. The weekly screen time notification. It gives a new meaning to the Sunday scaries. Rob has recently decided to give up two forms of social media: Facebook and Instagram. There wasn't a major reason or event that instigated Rob to do this. It was mainly a feeling that his life and time was being meaninglessly consumed by social media and the endless scrolling that ensues. We thought we'd sit down and chat a bit more about why Rob decided to do this and some of the positive and negatives that have come with it. This is a really interesting discussion and worth a listen regardless of if you are considering reducing your screen time or not! Topics discussed: – Why Rob decided to delete his Facebook and Instagram accounts – The benefits of reducing social media usage and what Rob uses his extra time for – The things Rob has missed out on and how this has affected him – How Rob would approach deleting social media if he had his time again – What Rob was accused of by some of his friends If you enjoyed this video make sure you check out the TRIAX Performance Social Media accounts! The last 2 years have been full of talk surrounding COVID-19 and vaccines, but rest assured, we're not here to add to that. Instead, we gave the stage to Rob who describes his experiences following his first dose of the Pfizer vaccine.  In the days before receiving his vaccine, Rob decided that yoga would be his new hobby. Rob was feeling revitalised, recommending that every man, woman and their dog take up yoga as well. But suddenly, this yoga participation had some somewhat adverse effects on Rob's physical condition and mental stability. For Rob, this lead to a week filled with terror and panic. For Sean and Damo, while some empathy was directed Rob's way, the reaction was pure amusement.  For a free shot at ridiculing Rob, you must listen to this episode of the DeakHeads podcast. You may feel sorry for Rob, you may laugh at him. Honestly, you're probably right either way but we'll let you be the judge. Velocity based training (VBT) has been simply put as an objective method of analyzing the intensity of a particular exercise. VBT has grown to prominence and can be used to evaluate how well an athlete performed an exercise (e.g., Squat, Deadlift, Bench Press) and even used as a prescription tool for reps and sets. There's a lot of confusion surrounding the term VBT and even the name might not be that accurate to reflect what velocity based training actually is. We can think of VBT as a method that uses the velocity of movement to guide training. But instead of speculating about VBT, we thought we'd get an expert in to explain VBT with us (and also talk about their brilliant new app). It's only taken a year, but the TRIAX boys have their first special guest on the DeakHeads podcast... Jacob Tober, a strength and conditioning coach and sport scientist was gracious enough to come on the DeakHeads podcast to talk all things Velocity based training (VBT). Jacob is the head of research and education at Metric, a revolutionary velocity based training app. Metric enables lifters and coaches to accurately track velocity, range of motion and power using just their smartphone camera. Jacob has also worked as a strength and conditioning coach at Core Advantage Athletic Development since 2013. In this podcast the TRIAX boys and Jacob discuss: - What is Velocity Based Training - Velocity based training explained - How VBT can be used in preseason and in-season - How VBT can be incorporated into the gym program - Using VBT alongside other markers of athlete readiness/wellness (e.g., RPE) - Preparing for your preseason on the back of the COVID hiatus - The Metric App: how it can be used to incorporate VBT into your program and help you as a coach/athlete - Misconceptions of VBT For further information on VBT or the Metric App check out the following links: YouTube: VBT Coach Instagram: @vbtcoach @metricvbt Metric App Private Beta waitlist: https://www.metric.coach/ VBT Course: https://www.vbtcoach.com/  If you enjoyed this video make sure you check out the TRIAX Performance Social Media accounts! You don't start training for a marathon the night before it starts. But what about a half-marathon? Well, that might be a different story. In this episode of the DeakHeads podcast, Sean and Damo attempted a half-marathon with little to no training. That's right. A couple of exercise and sport science professionals attempted a half-marathon with hardly any training. Can you actually complete a half-marathon with little to no training. Ideally, no. You should not attempt a half marathon without a solid block of aerobic training. But sometimes you just have to go out there and give it a shot. Sean and Damo both completed the 21km in around two hours. Were they sore? Yes. Should they have completed an actual training program? Yes. But in was also in the spirit of a very worth cause. Chris Ross, former Frankston VFL High Performance Manager was recently diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease at the young age of 31. The Frankston VFL community got around Rossy and raised over $100k for him and his family. A sensational effort. Sean also raised approximately $1500 himself. A commendable feat and one he should be extremely proud of himself for. In this video: - The boys talk about how they felt during different stages of the half-marathon - The points during the race when they felt they couldn't finish the 21km - How they felt after the race - What they did to recover from the half-marathon - How they would train for a half-marathon going forward - What you need to think about when training for your own half marathon - Should you do strength training for running? The NFL Season is just about to start, so we at TRIAX decided to try and preview the great American game with our wealth of experience... Well Sean knows a lot about the NFL and Rob is more of a novice so it's not all bad. But what we do know for sure is that this season in the NFL is going to be must see TV. Sean is a massive Patriots fan, whilst Rob is a die-hard Indianapolis Colts man - so there's a massive hatred between the two already. But in this video the boys try and predict and preview the upcoming NFL season. AFC and NFC standings are predicted as well as the Super Bowl teams, MVP, offense and defensive players of the year, rookies and even coach of the year! Contrary to popular belief, there is no chat about Australian Punters in the league in this episode so look out for future episodes! Patrick Mahomes seems like a common pick for MVP. The Chiefs seem like a lock for a Super Bowl berth, whilst there's plenty of hype surrounding the San Francisco 49ers. Let us know your predictions for the upcoming NFL season in the comments section. Discussion Points: - Sean's amazing ability to recall the past 20 years worth of MVP trophy winners from 100% pure memory - Rob's Jon Gruden style visor - Sean's Patriots Bias - Rob's Colts Bias - The hype surrounding the San Francisco 49ers - The Miami Dolphins being the multi killers - Not gambling on the first two weeks of the NFL season - The difficulties in picking the low seeds in the NFC - Coach of the Year decisions - Our love of the Spider 2 Y Banana Play If you enjoyed this video make sure you check out the TRIAX Performance Social Media accounts! R U Ok? It's a simple question and unfortunately one that doesn't get asked enough. Given the strain of the COVID-19 Pandemic and the countless amounts of lockdowns that we all have endured within Australia, our mental health is as important as ever. Each year in Australia the R U OK Day is held in September, raising awareness and starting actual conversations between friends, family and colleagues in maintain and improving mental health. In this special episode of the DeakHeads podcast, Damo and Rob sat down to have a genuine conversation about their own mental health and to check in on how each other is going. There's some brief chat about how working in sport can impact upon your mental health, particularly when living in bubbles, but for the most part its two mates talking about some of their struggles over the past 12-18 months. We hope that this video can spark a conversation to those who watch it and hopefully the viewers can show initiative by checking in on someone they care about. We are still riding high off the Australian Boomers Bronze Medal win at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics! But the Paris 2024 Olympics are only three years away. So we decided (Rob mainly) to try and predict the Boomers 2024 Olympics Squad. *Spoiler Alert - It was really really tough. It was tough because the Boomers are going through another transition phase. Joe Ingles, Patty Mills and Aron Baynes will all be at least 36 years old by the time Paris rolls around. There is no guarantee they will be in the green and gold by that stage. That means the younger boomers, such as the recent NBA Draftee to the Oklahoma City Thunder in Josh Giddey will have to assume a greater roll. Guys such as the new San Antonio Spurs player in Jock Landale and other NBA players like Josh Green will have to fill the void! Of course, if Ben Simmons chooses to participate during the next Olympics you would have to assume he would be your next starting Point Guard. Hopefully Matisse Thybulle can push him to play in Paris! But there's also an interesting crop of younger Boomers that will soon catch the attention of the Australian public. Guys like Dysan Daniels, Tyrese Proctor and Mojave King have big futures in basketball. One thing we hope is that Brian Goorjian can lead the Boomers again in Paris! Australian Paralympic athletes are now paid in bonuses if they win a medal at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. Before yesterday, Australian Paralympians were originally not offered prize money as bonuses for winning medals at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison made an announcement in Australian Parliament yesterday stating that all Australian Paralympic medallists would receive the same prize money amount as the Olympic athletes. That's a win. If you enjoyed this video make sure you check out the TRIAX Performance Social Media accounts! Australian Paralympic athletes were not paid in prize money or bonuses if they won a medal at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. Until a few hours ago.... Unlike their Australian Olympic counterparts, Australian Paralympians were originally not offered prize money as bonuses for winning medals at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. That was until Scott Morrison made an announcement in Australian Parliament today stating that all Australian Paralympic medallists would receive the same prize money amount as the Olympic athletes. That's a win. Of course when we filmed this podcast episode, this was before the Australian Federal Government announcement... However there's still a lot of good discussion points in this episode from Damo & Rob. If you enjoyed this video make sure you check out the TRIAX Performance Social Media accounts! The Tokyo Paralympics are underway. We at TRIAX couldn't be happier to see the most inspirational athletes on the planet compete given the current COVID-19 Climate. But who is eligible to compete at the Paralympic Games? What impairments must athletes have to qualify to compete? How are athletes grouped for the events they compete in? Damon and Rob were asking the same questions and have done a bit of homework to determine the answers for the loyal TRIAX family out there. In this episode we go through the eligibility of athletes to compete in the Paralympics and discuss the 10 impairments required to become a Paralympian! The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games were the equal most successful Olympics for any Australian team at the summer Olympics. Australia was only tied with their performance in Athens in 2004. What a turnaround we saw from the Australian Olympic Team in Tokyo compared to the Rio 2016 Olympics where the nation could only secure 8 gold medals. In Tokyo, the Australian swim team won 9... to eventually lead Australia to a record equalling 17-gold medals across the Olympiad. But why was there such an improvement compared to the results of Rio? How did Australia manage to turn it around? Well in this episode of the DeakHeads podcast, Damon & Rob attempt to unpack the Australian Olympic performance and try to identify some of the factors that aided in Australia's success. Some of the topics discussed include: -The introduction of Australia's "Winning Edge" program - The decentralisation of the Australian Institute of Sport - The power given back to National Sporting Organisations to facilitate the Olympic success of the sport - The success of the Australian Institute of Sport Gold Medal Ready Program - Peer Gold Medal support from former gold medallists - The impact of COVID-19 on the ability to train consistently for Australian athletes - The influence of the restructuring of national programs following Rio 2016 - How the decentralisation allowed Australian athletes to prosper going into Tokyo 2020. The Tokyo 2020 Olympics have officially come to an end (sigh). But we needed to have one last review of the COVID-19-impacted Olympics - if you can even call it that. The Australian Olympic Team had a massive Tokyo games! An equal best with Athens for Gold Medals (17), which more than doubled our haul from Rio. The Swimmers led the way, with the Mac's in Emma McKeon and Kaylee McKeown leading the charge in the pool with everyone's favourite in Ariarne Titmus defeating the American champ, Katie Ledecky. Needless to say, it was a tough task for the boys to cut down all their best moments from Tokyo 2020 into one top 10 list. We don't want to reveal too much more before you check out our list! But make sure you tell us what you think! The boys also revealed their winners for their awards, taking into account the heartbreaks, best performances and best efforts of the games. The Australian Men's Basketball team (Boomers) have finally won a medal in International Competition! Led by an unbelievable performance from Patty Mills, who scored 42 points, the Boomers overcame a Luka Doncic led Slovenia 107-93 to win Australia's first ever medal in Olympic basketball. The Tokyo 2020 Olympics will forever be known as the first event in which Australia broke their medal drought for men's basketball. Mills didn't do it alone - Dante Exum was huge across the four quarters, whilst Matisse Thybulle painted another defensive masterpiece against the formidable Luka Doncic. Nick Kay, Jock Landale and Joe Ingles all chimed in to help secure the Bronze for Australia. Get around this episode and celebrate with the TRIAX boys over Australia's history making night! You win some, you lose some. For Australia the last couple of days, we've suffered some heartbreak at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The Boomers lost against Team USA Men's Basketball in the semi-finals, despite being up by 15 points. The Matildas also lost to Team USA, 4-3 in the Bronze Medal match. Our beach volleyball girls in Clancy & Artacho Del Solar lost the gold medal match to the USA. It's been a rough rivalry with the might of Team USA. But we also won gold in the skateboarding with Keegan Palmer, gold in the 470 dinghy with Matt Belcher and Will Ryan and gold in the Canoe Sprint with Tom Green and Jean van der Westhuyzen. So it's not all bad. In fact, the highlight of the last couple of days could be seen on the athletics track. A marvellous effort from Peter Bol in the men's 800m, followed by a bronze medal to Ashley Moloney. But the sportsmanship and comradery from Cedric Dubler to help Moloney get the bronze in the 1500m is what Australia is all about. But geez the boys were flat in the latest recap episode. We hope you can join them and help create a safe space where we can share our angst and help put the last couple of days behind us. Highlights in this episode include: Breaking down the decathlon in terms of performance and recovery Plenty of lowlights surrounding the Australian teams Plenty of basketball chat Group admiration for Peter Bol Some of our athlete discussion includes (Australian bias): Peter Bol Australian Boomers Kookaburras Matildas Matt Belcher and Will Ryan 470 Laser Dinghy Boomers Melissa Wu Kareena Lee Harry Garside Keegan Palmer Ashley Moloney and Cedric Dubler Team USA and Kevin Durant If you think we've missed someone or made an oversight, please let us know in the comments below!! Let us paint you a little picture. A recap, if you will. 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Men's Basketball Semi Finals. The Australian Boomers vs the might of Team USA. The Boomers are led by Patty Mills, Dante Exum, Jock Landale, Matisse Thybulle, Nick Kay, Joe Ingles. Team USA have the likes of Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, Damian Lillard, Bam Adebayo, Jayson Tatum, Khris Middleton and Jrue Holiday. Australia were up by 15 points midway through the second quarter. Ball movement, outside shooting and stout defensive plays had Australian fans dreaming of the biggest upset in their country's basketball history and the certainty of their first Olympic medal. Chris Goulding hit 2 threes in what seems like as many possessions. Australia was rolling. But Kevin Durant was also rolling. KD kept Team USA in the ball game and evaporated the Australian dominance for the first quarter and a half. After half-time, it was one way traffic for Team USA on the way to another gold medal game. Whilst for the Boomers, the uncertainty of playing in another bronze medal game has left us all with nightmares about finishing fourth for the 6th time in international competition. The task doesn't get much easier for Australia as they now play in the Bronze medal match against Luka Doncic and Slovenia... Some of our discussion includes: Australia's fast start Disappointing second half Potential Boomers for 2024 Paris Olympics What we would have done as armchair coaches How to stop Kevin Durant How to stop Luka Doncic The aura of the American teams The crafty coaching from Gregg Popovich How much Australia missed Aron Baynes If you enjoyed this video make sure you check out the TRIAX Performance Social Media accounts! We're at three quarter time for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics! But the medals keep rolling in for the Australian's and boy are we pumped at TRIAX! Andrew Hoy, the 8-time Olympian again showed his equestrian prowess, taking out a silver and bronze medal in the one day! Not bad for a 60-something horseman!! Emma McKeon has tied Ian Thorpe for the most Gold Medals in Australian Olympic history and now has the most medals of any Australian Olympian of all time! Go Emma! Whilst Kaylee McKeown won the 100/200m backstroke double, capped off with a sensational win in the 4x100m medley relay! Again, the last couple of days have seen some agony and ecstasy in the Australian sporting landscape. The Matilda's lost in heart-breaking circumstances in the semi finals to Sweden, whilst the Hockeyroos were shocked by India in the Field Hockey quarterfinals. Rob's favourite moment was Ash Barty and John Peers picking up a Bronze medal for literally nothing. Thanks to the withdrawal of Novak Djokovic, Barty/Peers won a bronze medal in a walkover in the mixed doubles. Discussion also focuses on the high jump final and the controversy surrounding the awarding of two gold medals. Also Damon and Rob examine some of the athletes who don't mind rocking some big sunglasses or accessories to increase their swag game. Another few days have gone by at the Olympics and it's more gold for the Aussies!! The Australians continued their dominance in the pool with gold medals for Mckeon, Stubblety-Cook and McKeown, silver for Titmus and Chalmers and bronze for Cate Campbell, the women's 4x200m relay and the mixed 4x100m medley. Australia's golden girl Jess Fox also turned around her heartbreak from the K1 final to secure gold in the C1 in a blistering performance! And how about the performance from the Matildas!! Knocking off the poms in an electrifying extra time classic It hasn't been all smiles despite these successes with heartbreak for Ash Barty and John Peers losing in the tiebreak set in the tennis mixed doubles. The Australian Opals have also been disappointing dropping back-to-back games against Belgium and China Most importantly, this episode features THREE prestigious awards handed to our Aussie athletes by the TRIAX team, tune in to find out more!! We were only going to make a couple of Olympic videos, but we've been swept up in something more contagious than the COVID-19 pandemic... Australian Olympic Fever!! We love it!! Damo and Rob are back for another review episode of the Day 5 that was. An Australian gold rush unseen since the 1850's in Ballarat, Victoria!! Ariarne Titmus again knocked off Katie Ledecky, whilst Goulburn Valley were swiftly on the phone to the Oarsome Foursomes in both the Women's and Men's Fours. We don't like silver in Australia so we helped ourselves to a few more Bronze medals. Rob's man Rohan Dennis got the job done in the Men's Time Trial, whilst a couple more Bronze's in rowing and one in the swimming rounded out an historic day for the Australian Olympic team! It wasn't all medals for the Australian's however. There was some heartbreak in the boxing ring for our girl Skye Nicolson cutting up the onions for the Australian public following her heart-breaking quarterfinal loss. Heart-break on the doubles court in tennis as well with Ash Barty and Storm Sanders going down in the quarterfinals in a match tie-break!
