2023 F1 Australian GP - Seeing Red

As the Formula 1 world went down under, rumors were swirling about a former F1 driver that could make a comeback in 2024. Or is it possible that a return in 2023 is possible? Also, McLaren continues to struggle on the track and leading up to the Australian GP, a few leadership changes occurred. Is this good for the team or are there more things going on behind the scenes?  The 2023 Australian GP will certainly be remembered, but maybe not for the on-track action and left a lot of people seeing red. 2023 F1 Saudi Arabian GP Review - Is Lewis Hamilton Headed Towards Retirement?

This past Sunday, all the Formula 1 eyes were focused on Saudi Arabia. Leading up to the race, news was swirling about Lewis Hamilton as he split from his long-time physio. In addition, his thoughts on the car and George’s thoughts on the car differ wildly. What does the future hold for Lewis and is he heading towards retirement at the end of the year?   As far as the race, it was status quo heading into qualifying until Max Verstappen encountered an issue dropping him to 15th. Checo grabs the pole with Alonso riding shotgun. Alonso was off to a great start at the beginning of the race but would suffer a penalty for lining up outside his box, which brought more problems later. Max was storming through the field as Checo was out for an easy Sunday drive. As the race ended, Alonso was given a 10 second penalty, which was later rescinded. How should these penalties be given? In race or after and who is making those calls?   Lastly, F1 has had a tremendous amount of growth in the US in the last few years. There have been several factors Patrick believes that have led to this, but are we at a tipping point? 2022 F1 Brazilian GP and Sprint Review

Brazil was the host to Formula One this past weekend and the racing action did not disappoint! The was the first race weekend in a while that featured the sprint race format, shifting the qualifying to Friday after free practice 1. Rain falling from the skies gave the drivers tricky conditions as they tried to figure out which tire would suit the drying track more. By the end of qualifying, Kevin Magnussen would shock the F1 world and take his first ever pole position, along with the first ever pole for Haas. The sprint race would not provide such luck to the Haas team as Kevin fell back, but George Russell would take the sprint race win. This led to a lot of excitement heading into the race on Sunday for Mercedes fans as Lewis Hamilton and George Russel would lead the field to the green. The racing action on Sunday was jammed packed, giving fans all they could want. End the end, it was George Russell picking up his first ever win in Formula One. 2022 F1 Mexico City GP Review

Leading into the Mexico City GP, the announcements of the penalties against Red Bull and Aston Martin were announced for breaching the cost cap in 2021. Were the penalties enough? Too much? And will the FIA be consistent with future penalties? Speaking of penalties, the penalty against Fernando Alonso was rescinded from the US GP allowing him to regain his 7th place finish. But why was he penalized in the first place? As the race weekend began, Mercedes looked strong leading most practices. Was this their chance this year to bring home a win? Or would Ferrari contend for the win? As the weekend panned out, Max Verstappen took pole on Saturday and went for a leisurely drive on Sunday to take the checkered flag. The race however was quite the snoozer, especially compared to the NASCAR race. This was the second race weekend in a row where the two series went head-to-head during the race on TV. Who had the bigger viewership? Was it a surprise? And what about Ross Chastain’s move? The F1 drivers marvel! 2022 F1 Japanese GP Review

This week, the passionate fans of Japan were treated to their first in person Formula 1 race in three years. Heading into the weekend, much speculation remained on the cost cap as the findings were delayed, but soon the news of more seats being filled for 2023 season would take over the headlines. Rain would be a theme throughout the weekend again however, as it began on Friday and seemingly did not stop until near race end. Speaking of the race, the race started but heavy rains would put a damper on the start with the red flag being displayed shortly after a lap 1 incident. When the race started back, Max Verstappen would lead, and he would see his self to the checkered flag first, all while claiming his second world title. 2022 F1 Singapore GP Review

After 3 years away, the formula one road show rolled into Singapore, but not without controversy. While the teams were busy gearing up for the race, many were speculating about two teams that are rumored to be above the 2021 salary cap. Many team bosses are demanding harsh punishment, while others are denying the rampant rumors. While all that was going on, the drivers were busy adjusting to a wet track for qualifying after a dry Friday. Some drivers surprisingly struggled to adapt leaving them on the outside looking in as the other drivers ran to pole. Charles Leclerc was the driver who came out on top and would lead the field to the green flag on Sunday. But before the green on Sunday, more rain fell leaving the race more than an hour delayed. Could this be prevented? If so, how? Checo Perez mastered the start once the race began but was pressured the whole race from the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc. Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton struggled during the race and did not look like past champions. While Checo Perez handled the race start to finish, he was not without controversy too. The official results would be delayed by close to 3 hours while rules infringements under the safety car were investigated. Would it be right to take away the race win? The 2022 F1 Italian GP Review

Outside of the racing weekend, the formula 1 world was quite quiet. Speculation keeps swirling around the future of Colton Herta and a possible seat at Alpha Tauri, but an announcement about a possible super license is not expected until the end of this month. The race weekend seemed like a normal setup, outside another weekend full of grid placement penalties. However, an unexpected medical emergency caused Alex Albon to miss P3 and the remainder of the weekend. Nyck De Vries stepped in and placed his Williams into P13 and after the grid placement penalties, P8. Charles Leclerc took the pole in front of the heavy Ferrari crowd. With another mixed field due to penalties, there were hopes of excitement during the race. While Carlos Sainz brought a lot of excitement coming through the field, the rest of the race seemed to be on par with much of the rest of the season. Charles Leclerc led from the start, but Max Verstappen and Red Bull took over and led with strategy. A win at home looked lost for Ferrari at home until a late Safety Car bunched the field. Much to the disappointment of the fans, the race officials could not get the race going and the race finished behind the safety car. 2022 F1 Dutch GP Review

The Formula 1 world turned their attention to the Dutch GP this past weekend. While the weekend was getting started, some attention was still focused on the Contract Recognition Board (CRB) waiting to see if Oscar Piastri would race for McLaren in 2023. As soon as his fate was decided, the attention quickly turned to who would occupy the now vacant Alpine seat since Piastri would be with McLaren. Could it be Pierre Gasly? If so, does this open up a seat for Colton Herta? What about the Super License? The race weekend itself was very entertaining! From surprise qualifying outcomes from Mick Schumacher to Lewis Hamilton leading the race with only laps to go! Would strategy determine the outcome of the Dutch GP or would Mercedes be the ones left laughing with a 1-2 finish? Well, Max Verstappen and George Russell had a few things to add to this race outcome. Lastly, the Formula 1 circus heads to the palace of speed this weekend, Monza! It is one of the most iconic tracks on the F1 circuit. Can McLaren defend their win from last year, or will someone new emerge as the winner this weekend? Will Ferrari come out ahead at home? It will all be decided this weekend. 2022 F1 Belgium GP Review

When you thought silly season could not get any crazier, it did. Open seats at McLaren, Alpine, Haas, Alpha Tauri, Alfa Romeo – things are sillier than they have been in a long-time in Formula One. One driver certainly on the outside looking in is Daniel Ricciardo, but does he have options? Is another American driver jumping across the pond to showcase his skills? We will all have to wait and find out after the meeting of the minds at the CRB. While a lot of talk has been around driver placement, are grid place penalties getting out of hand? No driver started in the place where they qualified due to so many engine changes. Is three enough? Even though Max was one of the drivers who suffered from a grid place penalty, his car was best of class this past weekend, but was it enough to get him through the field? 2022 F1 Hungarian Grand Prix Review

The racing weekend started off early this past week as Sebastian Vettel announced his retirement from F1 at the end of the 2022 season. This shocked the F1 world but given his reasons, his adoring fans could not be happier for him and his family. While much of the start of the actual race weekend dealt with the fallout of the announcement, George Russell provided additional shock as he took his maiden poll in F1 on Saturday. This track has proved to be good for first time race winners who hailed from England, as Damon Hill and Jenson Button both took their maiden wins at the Hungaroring and then later both became World Champions. While George Russell led the field to the green flag, it was Max Verstappen who put on a driving clinic coming from 10th place on the grid with a master class in strategy from his team. While Max taking another win was not shocking, Fernando Alonso’s 2023 move was! 2022 F1 Austrian GP Review

Coming into the weekend, it felt like there was a lot of hype around the sprint race at the shortest track on the F1 calendar. Qualifying to set the grid for the sprint race really threw some curveballs with a couple of unexpected exits during Q3. That set the stage for a hopeful exciting sprint race. The sprint race showed promise, but mainly coming from the mid pack racing while the leaders at the front maintained their positions. When the grid took the green flag, orange smoke flew over the track as Max Verstappen took the lead but would soon be challenged. As the action proved to be much more exciting than the sprint race, it did seem like the race was hampered by track limit penalties but that did not dictate the race winner. At the end, Charles LeClerc came out on top of ending the halfway way point of the season on the top step. While there has been a lot of memories thus far, a lot of racing remains with 11 races to go in the heavily contested 2022 F1 season. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/f1byamericans/support

2022 F1 British GP Review

The 2022 British GP started off with quite the crash, momentarily trapping Zhou Guanyu in his Alfa Romeo. The sparks from that wreck were not the only fireworks of the race, as the fans were treated to the best race of the year and seeing Carlos Sainz take his maiden F1 win. While most of the drivers were engaged in great fights, Daniel Ricciardo could not engage his DRS in the middle of the race and failed to take advantage of regaining his lap after the red flag and finishing 13th. Does this result signal the end to the Daniel Ricciardo era at McLaren? All this and more this week on Formula Un By Americans Podcast. The 2022 F1 Canadian GP Review

As the show begins this week, Patrick and Steven recall a time where many thought that Formula 1 in the United States was dead. Tire failures led to a debacle at the 2005 US Grand Prix where only 6 cars started out of a 24-car field. While safety was clearly in the spotlight during that race, the rules regulations that contributed to that debacle may have not factored in safety at all. However, porpoising is clearly being viewed as a possible safety issue leading to a possible solution being in place prior to the British GP. But before the British GP, the F1 teams headed to Canada for round 9 of the 2022 F1 Season. The weekend started off dry and end dry but saw a wet qualifying session which mixed up the field. With a few drivers out of place, it provided for an exciting race day where Max Verstappen would increase his points lead in the driver’s standing. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/f1byamericans/support
