CCCC Szn 2: Ep. 3 The Path is NOT Linear with Dr. Andrea Hunt We back back after a little hiatus… So excited for y’all to listen in on these juicy conversations with First-Generation professionals, students, and nuggets of wisdom along the way The whole theme of conversation for this season is: 🎓The Path is NOT Linear 🎓 Ask For Help — Seek Assistance sooner than later (spoiler alert: it doesn’t make you any “weaker” to ask for what you need) 🎓 You Belong wherever you are in this moment (in your course, your institution, your work environment) — though systems were not created with First-Generation students in mind you still belong and should take up all the space you need & want SOOO CLICHE FAM But Ima say it — YOUR PATH IS YOUR PATH… its about finding the courage to walk it unapologetically and authentically in our own skin… How do we do this? 💜We find communities of support whether its family or chosen family 💜We commit to our own healing and liberation so fiercely that we start to chip away at Imposter Syndrome 💜 Like Dr. Andrea Hunt says “We have to really own our stories and what our path is going to be and not get caught up in comparing yourself to other people” TW: mentions of drug addiction, eating disorders, alcohol abuse & recovery journey (timestamps: 10:00–13:05; 17:00— 19:00; 31:00— 34:00; 45:00—51:00) This episode and podcast is an ode to First-Generation students and professionals navigating lyfe ONWARD! CCCC Season 1 Episode 9: Higher Education as First-Gen Latina In this episode Yessenia and I dive deep into discussing what it's like to navigate higher education as first-generation “Latinas”, we deconstruct what that means for us in academia. We share our love for study abroad and travel, and our shared role as a college advisor for students. Yessenia Tostado loves to appreciate time everyday to experience a life well-lived by actively being adventurous. She is a first generation Mexican-American college graduate and a daughter of immigrants. A brief road map of Yessenia’s life would highlight that she grew up in East Los Angeles, where she played soccer 7 summers in a row and had two different programs, Project GEAR UP and College Match, to support her in her college going journey. After learning about the value of a liberal arts education, Yessenia moved across the country to attend college in Pennsylvania, where she got to learn so much about herself, had some amazing experiences with best of friends, and was fortunate enough to study abroad twice. After earning a Bachelors of Arts in Psychology and a Health Studies Certificate from Dickinson College, Yessenia moved to the Chicagoland area to be an AmeriCorps Scholar Coach to support high school students in their journey to college.
