Description

The How Not To Screw Up Your Kids podcast is for parents, grandparents, educators, and anyone else who wants to be part of a movement to raise confident children who grow up believing in themselves. With twice weekly episodes - on Monday's you'll find shorter Bucket Emptying episodes, with longer episodes each Thursday.

The greatest gift we can give our children is self-belief. It will get them further in life than any qualification and is absolutely possible for each and every child; we just need the right information and support around us to teach them. The old saying ‘it takes a village to raise a child” couldn’t be more true than now.

Parenting has got a whole lot harder; not just because we are busier than ever but because our children are growing up in an ever changing, fast-paced world, which is so different to the one we grew up in.

Our children have more pressure to be better, look better, do better, and in a world where lives are so publicly scrutinised and commented on through social media it’s really no wonder we’re seeing mental health problems sky rocketing amongst children, teens, and young adults.

What you can expect from this podcast are honest conversations about parenting. We’ll talk confidence resilience, anxiety, managing tech, and all the topics you’d expect as well blowing the lid off the widely help misconception that children are innately resilient. They’re not!

This podcast is for people who want to get real about parenting. You understand it can get messy sometimes and aren’t afraid to admit it. I have had more than my fair share of messy and I will no doubt share these with you along the way.

I won’t dress things up but I will always give you something practical to take away and use in each and every episode.

My guests and experts will be real people who have overcome their own adversities and bring with them a message to us as parents, as well as inspiring stories.

So pour yourself a cuppa, find a comfy seat, and enjoy the conversation.

Do Time-outs Work??

Do Time-outs Work??

2024-03-1324:43

When our child is throwing the mother of all tantrums what do we do? My advice has always been not to use ‘the naughty step’ for the simple reason that it takes a child who is experiencing some pretty big, sometimes scary emotions and isolates them. However, a 'time-out' can be used effectively when the timing is right. Let me explain...Here are the highlights:(01:00) Naughty steps and removal of a child can be negative if used inappropriately(5:10) Understand the driver behind the behaviour(6:49) Add in what your child perceives is lacking(12:11) Work on your own big emotions(15:04) Be super clear about difference between behaviour and character(17:41) In the moment advice and how to use time-outsPurchase your ticket for the next 60-minutes with Dr Maryhan 'Stop Battling Back-Chat' at 8pm GMT on the 22nd of May. Watch the Bucket Emptying Episodes on YoutubeJoin the How Not to Screw Up Your Kids Community and ask Dr Maryhan your parenting questions in the weekly Q&A, access a library of digital courses, watch live/recorded 60-minutes with Dr Maryhan at your convenience, and in February your children can attend online workshops too. This week’s Bucket Emptying podcast episode addresses a question from a concerned parent - how to support a child who is self-deprecating after making poor choices. Your child might say things like "I'm a bad person", "I'm a naughty person", or "I'm awful” after snatching a toy from a friend, getting angry when they’re frustrated or squabbling with a sibling.Listen in as I explain how to help your child understand that their behaviour is separate from their identity and doesn’t define them!Purchase your ticket for the next 60-minutes with Dr Maryhan 'Stop Battling Back-Chat' at 8pm GMT on the 22nd of May. I get asked about back-chat a lot as I know it’s something we can really struggle with as parents.  We usually associate this type of behaviour with the teenagers being rebellious and pushing every boundary, but it’s about what’s happening in our children’s internal world than something which is specifically related to a given age or stage of development.  I’ll share my thoughts on why we are seeing this behaviour and I’ll share my top strategies to help and support. Here are the highlights: {1:18} Why are you seeing this behaviour?{4:45} Give your child choices where you can{9:11} Switch out of power dynamics{14:10} Remember the 3 C’s {20:00} Daily connection with each child {24:00} Regularly check-in with yourself & your partner Listen to previous episodes mentioned during this episode:Ep 6: Parenting & Co-parentingEp 13: Why punishments don’t workPurchase your ticket for the next 60-minutes with Dr Maryhan 'Stop Battling Back-Chat' at 8pm GMT on the 22nd of May.
