Since then, many changes have occurred including the return of those Hindus who had been displaced, but terrorists still are active, like the ambush of police in Gulmarg two weeks ago. We are joined again by Kashmiri Ashok Moza who has kept a keen eye on developments and has often come on the show as an analyst on developments in the region. 4:50 pm In June 2023, the US Supreme Court voted 6-3 in a historic decision that effectively ended race-conscious admission programs at colleges and universities across the country. The rollback of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs is a corporate and higher education trend that has been gaining momentum in recent years. We are joined today by Niyati Shah, Director of Litigation at Asian Americans Advancing Justice in Washington, DC to explain what the effect of this ruling has been so far. 5:20 pm The 18th North American Zoroastrian Congress will be held in Houston in late December at the Royal Sonesta Hotel and is returning here after an absence of 14 years. In today's society, more and more cases come to light as unscrupulous people take advantage of the defenseless elderly. The Harris County District Attorney's office has a special unit that deals with elder abuse crimes. To tell us more about what to watch out for and how to protect the elderly, we are joined by Asst. District Attorney Joe Frank who is in charge of the Elder Abuse section. 5:00 pm The race for Ft Bend Constable Pct 3 is being tightly contested by two Pakistani-American candidates. We are joined today by one of them, Ali Sheikhani, who last week was in our line up but unable to join at the last minute. He is a very successful businessman and also a police officer. We will learn why he is running and what his platform is, as the November 5 General election rolls closer. He is running against incumbent Democrat Nabil Shike who took office in 2020. 5:20 pm This coming Friday, November 1, the MB Foundation will bring together a concert featuring singers Senjuti Das and Trijoy Dey at the Stafford Civic Center. Senjuti was a finalist in Sony TV’s Indian Idol 2022, was also among the top 10 in Zee TV’s Sa Re Ga Ma Pa and is currently a Bollywood playback singer. Elected an anti-corruption platform, he has called for snap elections for the 225-member parliament in order to garner a majority for his 3-member party to form a ruling coalition. He faces enormous hurdles since the country’s economic collapse two years ago. We asked Sri Lankan expatriate and local immigration attorney Chiro Nanayakkara to put things in perspective. 5:00 pm The coronavirus is resurging again and medical professionals are warning that we should take precautions against a wider spread, especially among the elderly and young. There is even a new vaccine out which people are encouraged to take, and many are wearing maskswhen they travel. We're joined today by coronavirus researcher Dr. Benjamin Neuman, a professor of biology and researcher at Texas A&M University to help answer people’s questions about viruses. 5:20 pm Emaan Syed is a dedicated and driven teenage leader who has taken on numerous leadership roles and made remarkablecontributions. We ask her today to explain what Medicare Supplemental insurance is, the cost and the coverage. 5:20 pm Federal Trade Commission data shows that more reports about impersonation fraud are filed than reports about any other category. Reported losses to impersonation scams have skyrocketed from January to June of this year to over $1.3 billion. Scammers are using new methods to drive the increasing losses. We turn to Kati Daffan, Asst. Director of the FTC’s Division of Marketing Practices to explain how consumers can protect themselves and their communities from impersonation scams by knowing how to spot them. The land is on a 100-acre planned industrial park that formerly housed the Central Prison Unit, ⁠which closed in 2011⁠. On September 5, nearly 300 Fort Bend County residents packed the atrium of the Houston Museum of Natural Science at Sugar Land to protest and reject the proposal. The event featured the usual booths and eating stalls, but what stuck out especially this year was the stage show of local talent from dancers to fashion shows and skits and the way it was pulled together. The performances were on time, and the music, digital backdrops and lighting kept the audience riveted to their seats. It was a turnaround from previous years of stage shows, so we asked President Parul Fernanades and Program Chair Jasmeeta Singh to tell us how they pulled it off. 4:50 pm Texas House District 26 is up for grabs after the previous representative Republican Jacey Jetton lost to challenger Matt Morgan in the primary. Chinese-American Democrat Daniel Lee hopes to capitalize on this changing of guard and gain the seat in the November election. Lee’s platform includes reforms in infrastructure, healthcare, education and controlling gun violence. He joins us today to explain his programs and what makes him the better candidate for the district. 5:20 pm The Foundation for Children’s Cancer Research and Support will be holding it annual fundraising gala on October 5th at the Stafford Civic Center. The nascent 7 year old organization is a labor of love for the founders Jeet & Keka Kar who mortgaged their entire lifestyle in India to come to the US and take care of their young son who had cancer and has been in remission. This made them realize there are other children that need the same help, especially in India. We have them with us today to explain more about the organization and goals. Many businesses are pursuing legal recourse against CenterPoint for damages from loss of food to loss of business and even the loss of lives. Does any of this legal action claim merit? We turn to her friend of many years and currently Honorary Consul of Guyana, Lutfi Hassan, and her other good friends Congressman Al Green and Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis for remembrances of her achievements for her hometown. Longtime choreographer Kusum Sharma has found an ingenious way of recycling these clothes for the benefit of the poor and refugees in India and joins us today to tell us more. 5:00 pm The cost of college education continues to soar in the US, even at lower tier universities and community colleges and many students find themselves strapped for tuition and fees. Recognizing this need, several non-profits offer scholarships to help part of the way. One of these is the Bhalla Outstanding Student Scholarship or BOSS which offers an opportunity to  compete for a $5,000 scholarship.
