Rowan thought he would like to make ice cream which he would make on-demand with bicycle power. Wow!The drawings for his plan showed Rowan has the mind of an engineer. He had a clear vision of what the experience would be like for the customer. When I asked him ‘why bicycle power’ he would explain his drawing, not how that would offer better ice cream. The bicycle part was his unique business offering. He was visualizing the experience and that was his selling point. In the next class each student was to bring a prototype of their idea and pitch it to the class. Rowan showed up with Ketchup. Somewhere in the process of working through this at home, he discovered the limitations, both logistically and legally, of his ice cream idea. But I think he always had a food-based business in mind. His parents offered an alternative idea, their organic homemade ketchup recipe, and it evolved into a business he continues today.Rowan was 6 years old when he joined the Young Entrepreneurs class. When I listened to him describe from one year to the next, I was a thrill he figured out that by providing size choices to his customers he was essentially leaving money on the table. Plus he shifted his ideal customer from kids to adults because "they'll buy more expensive things" essentially realizing that although kids love ketchup, it's not likely an item kid will buy.And his new labels, on his new bottles, now have the perfect tag line to reflect that:"Ketchup for kids that love ketchup whose parents read labels"
At 13 Dylan Soh started his first business with his invention the 'GIYstick' which reuses plastic bottles and upcycled fabric to make any pot self-watering. This was Soh's first crowdfunding campaign and he raised $25,000 on Kickstarter. Now, at 17, Dylan has launch another invention into a startup business called the One Kind Block, "The world's first LEGO-like hydroponic unit designed to make cities fertile by adapting to your windows, balconies, corridor and walls." His current Kickstarter campaign (this is the second round) has raised over $40,000 USD and is still going. If you'd like to be a OKB backer you can go here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/onekindblock/one-kind-block-new-relaunchedGalileo was fortunate to have Dylan teach our students about crowdfunding in 2020 and share his knowledge with our budding young entrepreneurs. In this episode we discuss the origins of the his inventor's mindset and how he got started. Dylan shares the challenges of using crowdfunding with the increase in products on platforms like Kickstarter. He explains how he uses local resources to prototype and produce OKB. Dylan has some great advice for young entrepreneurs as well. Enjoy!
