Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. The lead story in tonight's news concerns the fire which covered the major portion of nearby Columbia College at 4 a.m. this morning. Fortunately, there were no injuries resulting from the fire. According to the college president, they are already planning to raise money to rebuild the college.

Man: What are you looking at?
Woman: Hi, Masaki. This is a chart called “My Plate”, which the USDA made as a guideline for a healthy diet.
Man: The USDA?
Woman: The United States Department of Agriculture. Obesity and being overweight are serious problems in the US, and that's why the USDA made this chart.
Man: Very interesting. Obesity and being overweight are now big problems in Japan too. So, what is on the plate? There are four parts of different sizes and a small circle.
Woman: Each part shows what you should eat and how much. You should fill half of your plate with vegetables and fruits, then the other half with grains and proteins.
Man: Which should we eat more of, grains or proteins?
Woman: The former.
Man: And, what does the small circle represent?
Woman: It represents dairy foods.
Man: Wow, this plate can help you eat very healthily.

We can't ignore the pollution or the suffering we are causing somewhere else in the world. It's all part of our responsibility for our global “household.” In the long run, a destroyed ecosystem means a destroyed economy.

Sister cities bring together communities from different areas and different cultures. Sister-city relationships can help communities learn from each other and solve problems together. Often these partnerships are based on special projects or homestay programs. People share their knowledge in areas like education, government, business or technology. Sister-city relationships also connect citizens who share an interest in other cultures, international understanding and friendship through educational, cultural and humanitarian activities. And citizen diplomats can help build peace.
Today, 129 Japanese communities have partnerships with almost 1800 communities in other countries. The Tokyo metropolitan government, for example, has 11 sister-city partnerships. One is with Paris, France. Another is with Seoul, South Korea. These two relationships have existed for more than 20 years. The areas they involve include economic development and trade.
In another part of the world, within the past 15 years, many American cities have created partnerships in developing countries. Projects have involved water quality, health care and good government, for example. In Africa, projects might also deal with AIDS and tuberculosis. Sister-city partnerships usually result from local connections. Local governments also become involved and may provide some leadership. But, generally, citizen groups are responsible for organizing and supporting partnerships.
