How can we make data and AI more human-centric and inclusive, and why is this shift so important for the future of technology? By prioritising empathy, inclusivity, and accessibility in data practices, we can build solutions that genuinely serve diverse communities and create meaningful impact. In this episode Nina Dunwoody, Lead Data Delivery Manager at Co-op, talks about her passion for making data and technology more approachable and relevant to everyone. Nina challenges the stereotype that data is a male-dominated, highly technical field, instead advocating for a culture where data is accessible, human-centred, and aligned with real-world needs. Drawing from her own journey—one that includes dropping out of university and later finding success through an apprenticeship—Nina underscores the value of alternative pathways to thriving in tech. She also emphasises the need for data leaders to foster psychologically safe workplaces and champion empathetic, purpose-driven AI, especially for applications like mental health support, where technology can be truly transformative.0:00 Intro3:51 Making Tech and Data Meaningful and Inclusive5:50 Aligning Data Strategy with Business Objectives9:05 Nina's Personal Journey and Work-Life Balance11:34 Support Systems and Mental Health at Work17:37 Role Models and Leadership Behaviours28:50 The Importance of Empathy and Kindness in Leadership29:03 Nina's Career Transition into Data39:32 The Role of Data Literacy and Communication50:48 Quick Fire Data Lightning RoundFor more information head to https://www.miraitalent.com/To learn more about Nina Dunwoody head to https://www.linkedin.com/in/ninadunwoodyWelcome to “Let’s Talk Data”, a deep dive into the transformative realm of data with the trailblazers of this disruptive industry.Your host Emma Crabtree explores the latest trends and developments in the data sector, while also delving into the personal stories of these data pioneers. They reveal how they harness data, not just in business, but in shaping their everyday lives, from optimising daily routines to making data-informed decisions. Getting Ahead of the Curve: How Bentley Motors Uses Apprenticeships to Develop Future Data Talent and Stay Competitive How can companies best prepare for the data skills needed in the future? Today I speak to two members of Bentley Motors data team: Andy Moore, Chief Data Officer, and Niamh Frogley, a data science apprentice. At Bentley Motors, they took a forward thinking approach by creating an apprenticeship program to develop a data talent pipeline. By researching what future skills they would need to hire for, they identified roles like data scientists before the job descriptions even existed. Bentley then created degree apprenticeships to cultivate homegrown talent. Now with a cohort of apprentices at different experience levels, including some earning degrees, Bentley has fresh perspectives entering the business regularly. The apprentices also gain years of hands-on work experience alongside qualifications. This win-win scenario allows Bentley to stay ahead of changing industry needs and have leaders primed for new opportunities. By maximising their apprenticeship program and commitment to diverse views, Bentley has found an effective way to both benefit their organisation long-term and support the careers of their future data leaders. How can organisations ensure their AI initiatives are built on strong foundations to deliver results? According to Andrew Sharp, Principal Consultant of Data Governance and Data Protection at The Oakland Group, having robust data governance practices in place is crucial for success with AI. Andrew notes that AI is only as good as the data it's trained on, emphasising that organisations need to focus on data quality and management to truly unlock the power of AI. Through his work with clients across industries, Andrew has seen first-hand how prioritising data governance lays the groundwork for AI to perform at its best. With the right people, processes and tools in place, AI can be seamlessly integrated into a company's operations and decision-making. But it all starts with the data - is it fit for purpose and being looked after properly? Only then can AI realise its full potential. How hard could it be to break into data? Dawn Carter, Enterprise Data Architect at BAE Systems, had never imagined a career in the field would be possible, starting her career in a call centre rather than studying analytics in university. She became curious about whether data was something she could do when asked to help implement a new system. This led her on a journey of questioning how things worked and continually taking on new challenges. When doubts of imposter syndrome crept in after transitioning to data roles, she wondered how difficult pursuing opportunities truly could be. So when a conference in California presented itself, she decided to submit a speaking proposal without telling anyone, thinking there was little chance she'd hear back. To her surprise, they asked her to turn it into a full day workshop instead. This spurred her on to share her experiences overcoming perceived limits by asking questions without fear of being wrong, helping others see what may be within reach through perseverance. How can businesses cultivate a culture of purpose and social mobility? Hemant Patel, the visionary CEO of Anumana, a cutting-edge data and analytics consultancy, exemplifies this ethos. Hemant’s passion for social mobility drives initiatives like the Anumana Code Academy, which aims to empower 1,000 underprivileged children annually in the North of England through Python education. This commitment echoes the necessity for leaders to consciously embed purpose and inclusivity into corporate cultures. By fostering values that extend beyond profit, such as community engagement and diversity, businesses can make a lasting impact. My own journey parallels Hemant's, sharing a deep-seated belief in purpose-driven leadership and the importance of Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DE&I). How can organisations better support the development of data literacy within their workforce? Jordan Morrow, Senior Vice President of Data & AI Transformation at AgileOne, joins me to discuss all things data literacy. While technical skills will remain important, organisations should focus on cultivating curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking in their employees. Success will depend on establishing a growth mindset where learning from mistakes and ongoing improvement are valued. It's also crucial that sufficient time and budget are dedicated to building strong data foundations before pursuing flashy new technologies. With patience and investment in people, organisations can develop a data-literate culture where all staff feel empowered to use insights to make informed decisions and unlock new opportunities for the business.
