Do you have questions about using inclusive language? Are you curious about pronouns and why they matter? Today I'm joined by Kate Barnes, a dear friend, who openly shares their journey. Kate also provides some helpful resources. All of them are linked in the show notes. Let's learn and unlearn together! Let's get intentional about our language!
Resources mentioned in the episode:
Differentiating between gender vs. sex vs. sexual orientation (Rainbow Health Ontario: https://www.rainbowhealthontario.ca/news-publications/glossary/)
Practice exercises and worksheet (UNC): https://showyourlovetoday.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/Pronoun-Practice.pdf
Unsure of conjugation for pronouns www.practicewithpronouns.com
"Imagine a Pair of Boots" from Ivan Coyote's "The Slow Fix" Collection of Short Stories (available via London Public Library). There's an excerpt of their short story "By Any Other Name" linked here (choose "Read Excerpt (PDF)" button) that captures an example of someone who transfers their pain instead of transforming it.
Resources not mentioned but equally helpful:
Listen to people with lived experience. This includes people in your community who share similar contexts *and* includes more well-known folks beyond those contexts. Examples I follow include Alok Vaid-Menon (advocacy and stand-up comedy; website: https://www.alokvmenon.com, Insta: alokvmenon), Bob The Drag Queen (Drag Queen from Ru Pauls' drag race; Insta: bobthedragqueen, podcast: siblingrivalry), Mercury Stardust (advocate for making DIY in the home accessible, especially for women; website: https://mercurystardust.com, Insta: mercurystardusttopz, new book called "Safe and Sound"), Jeffrey Marsh (advocate and ....; Insta: thejeffreymarsh), Clara Olshansky (comic and writer; Insta: claraolshansky), and Sam Smith (Insta: samsmith; singer and songwriter). Or find your own folks to learn from, there are non-binary folks in many niches!
NPR: A Guide to Gender Identity Terms: https://www.npr.org/2021/06/02/996319297/gender-identity-pronouns-expression-guide-lgbtq (terms about gender/sex, the manners around asking/using pronouns, what different combos of pronouns can mean, and how to navigate when someone’s name is different than what’s on their ID).
London Public Library has "Tomboy Survival Guide" by Ivan Coyote - great explanation of what it's like for tomboys to grow and learn in cis-gender environments.

Do you ever say, I'll be happy when...
Rather than waiting for happiness/ joy to arrive, what if you were in charge of curating it and bringing it into your daily practice?
My husband turned to me one day about 10 years ago and said "I feel like I sucked the joy out of you." In that moment, I realized I had lost my way. It took me time but I'm happy to report joy and happiness can be created. Happiness isn't something we wait for. Happiness is finding joy in the small things. It's about gratitude. It's also about focusing on your daily habits and carving out space and time for YOU. This awareness has brought joy back into my life. I'm purposeful now about bringing joy into my life regularly. Are you intentional about doing this for yourself?

Something I have been thinking a lot about in my healing journey is the idea of learning to transform my pain rather than transferring it to others. In this episode I explore some steps that have helped me process and transform my pain. This is a work in progress folks but the first step is creating awareness of the pain. Naming it and then finding ways to transform it. If you're here to learn, grow and transform, this episode is for you!

In this episode, I'm joined by a Connie. Connie and I met almost 2 years ago and she has been one of the greatest gifts I've received from my health journey. I never expected meeting and making friends as part of this journey!
I invited Connie on the podcast to share a bit about her personal journey, especially as it relates to bouncing back from injury, healing yourself by listening to your body and not being afraid to try something new even if you've tried it before and created a story about it not being for you.
We all experience setbacks. It's how we bounce back from them that matters. I hope you enjoy our conversation!

I can't be the only person who listens to something and then immediately sends it to as many people as possible. This week, I heard an episode of the Mel Robbin's Podcast that I deeply connected with. The universe KNOWS what we need and this episode popped up on my phone when I was driving to work and it was full of messages I needed to hear. I want to share some of my reflections with you. In this episode I'm joined by Bill Kelly from Bill Kelly Spirit Messages. Bill entered my life about 2.5 years ago (maybe 3.5) but who's counting. Meeting Bill has had a big impact on my life. He shares a little about his past and what brought him to his calling. He shares that we all have a choice to accept healing. Bill shares that when we accept healing, we become open to changing how we think about ourselves. Most of what keeps us stuck is our mindset and the stories we tell ourselves that keep us afraid of growing, changing and shining our innate light. Bill says we all have the capability to do what he does. Would you agree? Listen with an open mind and open heart and let me know what you think!

We all have mental health. Our mental health falls on a continuum. Here I share a bit about my struggles with my mental health set backs and how seeking help got me through the tough times. Having a plan and knowing who you would reach out to if you ever need support is a great first step. Get to know supports in your community. Having a help seeking attitude can make all the difference. I'm happy to report I am in a much better place now mentally, physically and emotionally. It's a journey and it takes daily practice!
Drop the shame. Drop the judgement. Show yourself and others radical compassion.

Today I welcomed my first guest on the Podcast! Kelly Howard has over 25 years of experience coaching women. She helps them prioritize their fitness so they can feel great and have more fun in their 2nd act of life and beyond. Kelly is the Author of Fit, Active and Ageless for Life, just released this summer.
We chat about how being intentional leads to more freedom. She shares her insights into why it's essential to build in "play" time, wild card days and finding things that intrigue you. As women, we often focus too much on all of our responsibilities but to what end? Does it ever end? No! It's time to stop feeling guilty about scheduling in time for play.

Feeling frustrated and not sure what's going on? If you're anything like me, you turned 45 and all of a sudden you couldn't figure out what was going on with your energy and that extra weight around the middle. I had two babies and was able to lose that weight in a reasonable time but after 40 things changed. What I didn't realize is that we NEVER learned how to tap into nutrition to change things. I've been on a journey the past 18 months to learn all about how we can use food to heal ourselves. It's an inside job! Most of us (especially women) have been undereating for a very long time. We haven't been getting enough protein, healthy fats and fibre filled carbs to really fuel everything we do in a day. I'm at a healthy weight now, the strongest I've ever been and I'm eating a ton of food. I have lost 70 lbs! This hasn't been about restriction or intensive cardio. I don't even do high impact cardio. It's mostly nutrition, being intentional with my choices, doing strength training and some no impact cardio. At 50 I feel better than I did at 30! Your body is craving all kinds of sugar and processed carbs because it's lacking nutrients. Give it the proper balance of nutrients and it will be life changing. No joke! Stop stressing your body out by undernourishing it.

September is a busy time. It's stressful for many of us. This year our family has added stress with our daughter starting first year of college, my husband is prepping for an intense 8 day retreat in the wilderness and I'm short staffed at work and in our busiest time of the year. September can also be exciting, energizing and fun. I am trying to find something fun and energizing each day. We get to choose what we see. I'm trying not to dwell in the overwhelm, although sometimes it gets the better of us. Take a listen to how I'm working through stress this month. I'd love to know what your strategies are! I'm always looking for tools for my personal toolbox. Thanks for listening!

A group of us have started the Gut Protocol again and it has me thinking a lot about our food system and how much we're sold on "convenience" foods. Have you taken time to read labels and learn about them? Do you look at how much added sugar is in even "healthy foods?"
It this episode I talk about the Gut Protocol program and how it has helped me really learn what not only works for me. It has taught me so much about hidden ingredients and things we need to pay more attention to. Ever wonder why you have some extra weight around your belly? Feeling bloated? It could be an issue with insulin resistance and sugars hidden in your foods. Take a listen. If you'd like more info on the Gut Protocol, reach out. It's been life changing for me and so many others.

Today's the day! I'm half a century. I wanted to share some thoughts and reflections. I hope you can find something useful in the episode. One thing I know is that I don't have it all figured out and that's ok. I'm learning. I'm trying. I'm embracing my humanity more than ever. I feel more like myself than ever before. I'll take that as a win. This is my final episode of season 1. Thanks for listening and have a wonderful summer!

What are you holding onto that is no longer serving you? It's ok to admit it. We all do it. We hold on to thought patterns and ways of being because initially they maybe helped us but then we wake up one day and realize that it's no longer serving us and in fact, it is holding us back. This is your reminder to give yourself permission to let it go. Risk being human. Forgive yourself. Love yourself. I promise if you can begin to do this for yourself, life becomes a bit more meaningful and beautiful 🙏💗.

When we're young we take our mobility, our flexibility, our health and so much else for granted. Until one day we wake up and we realize things have changed. We struggle to get up off the floor. We have aches and pains everywhere. It starts slowly initially and then things seem to slide downhill quickly. Or at least that's what happened with me. Curious what you took for granted in your youth?

Burnout happens over time. Big and small things chipping away at our ability to cope. I was reluctant to label what I was experiencing as Burnout until I knew I couldn't continue on the path I was on. Have you experienced burnout? If so, how have you overcome it? Are you currently experiencing burnout? If so, I see you. I hear you. I'd love to connect. It doesn't have to be this way. We can make small actions every day to support ourselves. Sharing this episode with all of my love.

Do you find fear holding you back? Have you considered that fear and faith are the same? We can't see them, but we know they're there. What if you chose faith over fear? What if you had faith in the process? Let's learn to embrace faith together! Let's learn to trust the process. Let's learn that it's ok to not have all of the answers. It's ok to let go of fear.

Tribute to my dad. We lost him 9 years ago today. I wanted to come on the podcast briefly to share some cool realizations I have made recently about my dad and how he influenced me by setting a great example of using a growth mindset. As I have said all along, mindset really is everything. I might have learned a bit about growth mindset from my dad before growth mindset was even a "thing." What did you learn from your parents?
