Listen with LOUIS is the community podcast for LOUIS: The Louisiana Library Network. Each episode contains an interview with a LOUIS member librarian, staff, or participant about what's happening in Louisiana libraries, as well as other content. The goal of this podcast is to share knowledge among the LOUIS consortium and to highlight the excellent work of its members.

Experiential Learning at Louisiana Tech Special Collections, Manuscripts, and Archives

"Experiential learning" may sound like a buzzwordy academic trend, but for Louisiana Tech's Special Collections, Manuscripts, and Archives (SCMA) it has meant a hugely successful internship program.Join us in this episode of Listen with LOUIS where we speak with the Louisiana Tech archivist, Michelle Riggs Waller, and history professor, Dr. Elaine Thompson, who collaborated to create a fruitful internship for Jenny Little, a public history student. Through this collaboration, Jenny had the opportunity to curate an exhibit called "Far Out Fashion: Exploring the 70s Style Revolution" for the SCMA, an exhibit that Michelle is now using to talk about the internship program and show off the archives at the SCMA. She even wrote a recent LOUIS Lagniappe article about the exhibit. Michelle Riggs Waller is the Special Collections Librarian and University Archivist at Louisiana Tech. Dr. Elaine Thompson is the Associate Professor and  McGinty Professor of History at Louisiana Tech. Jenny Little is a public history major and SCMA intern at Louisiana Tech.

A Whiteboard Space Assessment at LSUS with David Gaither

David Gaither, along with other library faculty andstaff at LSUS, just conducted a 6-week white board assessment of the physical space in Noel Memorial library, and it was a huge success. Creating a Zen Room for Faculty in Southern's John B. Cade Library with Dr. Dawn Kight and Dr. Valaray Irvin

Dr. Dawn Kight, Dean of Libraries at Southern University, is always looking for new and innovative practices to meet the needs of Southern's campus and community, so when Dr. ValaRay Irvin, Executive Director and Licensed Psychologist in the Southern University Counseling Center, pitched the idea to create a Zen Space for campus faculty at the library, Dr. Kight was thrilled for the project. A Black Living Room Exhibition at LSU with Narcissa Haskins & Lauren Lay

LSU Librarians Narcissa Haskins and Lauren Lay just did something unusually excellent -- they recreated a black living room from the 1970s, complete with wood paneling, period furniture, shelves of books, and more. The exhibition, which they collaborated on with Dr. Asha Winfield, an assistant professor in LSU's Manship School of Mass Communication, was created to pay tribute to black women's biopics and black living room pedagogy.  In this episode we listen to Narcissa and Lauren talk about their experience creating this display, the reaction that LSU students and faculty had to the display, and why this amazing effort was worth it.
