In this episode, we share the remarks delivered by Dang Phan, Class of 1979, at the naturalization ceremony that was held here on campus on October 22 and that was officiated by the honorable Alfred Covello, Class of 1950. Forty-nine new citizens were naturalized in the Olcott Center before a crowd of their friends and family alongside the entire Loomis Chaffee community. Dang arrived at Loomis with his family in the fall of 1974 after fleeing Vietnam as political refugees and after being rescued by the U.S. Navy in the Pacific. Jeff was actually mentioned in our recent interview with novelist Keith Scribner '80, whose most recent novel takes place in the area and features Connecticut shade tobacco. This has been a Pelican Scoop Community Time. New episodes are released on the first and third Thursday of each month. Long-form episodes about life at Loomis Chaffee also appear in this feed, and are released roughly once a month. Thank you for listening.
Sometimes the evening dorm snack involves time travel. Such was the case this winter when the girls in Longman Hall agreed to sample dishes made from recipes preserved in the Loomis Chaffee Archives. School Archivist Karen Parsons stopped by the studio to tell us how the students received these recipes from the past. This has been the Pelican Scoop Podcast which is produced by the Loomis Chaffee Office of Strategic Communications. Mary Forrester produces the show. My name is Keller Glass, I direct and edit the podcast. The intro to this episode was taken from an article Karen wrote in the 2019 Spring issue of the Loomis Chaffee magazine.
