We cover it all to support you and your goals with some of the best minds in the world joining me each week. I'm Alexx Stuart, your host, and in 2009 I coined the term 'low tox' and started lowtoxlife.com. From there I've created 10 courses and had 2 books published (Low Tox Life and Low Tox Life FOOD; I've written countless research articles and recipes to inspire a low tox life. I am thrilled to bring this podcast to you as an extension of the online community, filled with multi-passionate people from around the world. The concept of living a Low Tox Life is one that rejects perfection, black and white notions of there only being one way to 'do it right'. Instead, we take a relaxed and curious approach to better choices to incorporate into our lives as and if they fit. Low Tox therefore instead of 'no tox' as people come together from all walks of life; from cities to regional and remote areas to work from our overlaps and all be part of the many solutions toward healthy people and planet. Forget wasting time feeling bad about what you're not doing or you didn't know yesterday. Let's feel awesome about what we can learn and do from today! Thanks for being here. I just know you'll be inspired as I am by each show. Enjoy, subscribe, pop the kettle on and most importantly: Welcome!

We often think of environmental toxins as things that can harm us from the outside, but what about toxins inside our bodies? This week, continuing our environmental toxin series I invite the wonderful Kirsty Wirth back to the show to discuss potential environmental toxins in our inner environment, especially the digestive tract. We talk testing, budget options, health practitioner team assembly, lifestyle hacks to embed before seeing a practitioner and the names of specific things to look for in gut/poop tests to investigate with trickier cases. Kirsty is a wealth of knowledge on things that can drastically move the needle in chronic health pictures from neurological challenges, to mental health, gut diseases and behavioral concerns to help people thrive.  Enjoy the show and head to the show notes for more details on Kirsty's work and this week's special low tox swap offers over at lowtoxlife.com/podcastSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. I remember so well seeing the news break that lego were going to be aiming to be new-petroleum-free by 2030, engaging a huge task force of sustainability experts, scientists and industrial designers to work on this project. Today, some 2.5 years late, I chat to Tim Brooks, ex environmental advisor to the City of London, now with LEGO, on how their work is going towards this goal. We can all move mountains, and the big companies of LEGO's size can effect radical change when they move the needle on how the produce their products, so I hope you enjoy this look into what Lego is working to achieve. Dr Lewis Ehrlich is a highly sought after holistic dentist who graduated from James Cook University (JCU) with the Academic Medal. With a background in professional sport and his passion for holistic health, Lewis focuses on the link between oral health and general overall health in his practice - it's why you'll never hear a bandaid solution for an oral health concern in my interviews with him! Before studying dentistry, he completed a Bachelor of Science at Northeastern University in Boston, USA after receiving a soccer scholarship where he played for 2 years. He then moved to Reykjavik, Iceland where he played professional soccer before moving into dentistry and now practicing at Sydney Holistic Dental.  This show, part 2 of two that I'm recording with Dr Lewis (go back for the 1st one last month!), is the result of my asking the Low tox club chat group and alumni course groups if they had any ongoing concerns and questions about oral health - from teeth (grinding / enamel / cavities) to gums to oral microbiome to jaws to treatments and appliances and preventative health. There I was thinking I was going to be doing a show on grinding and appliance options with ‘a few' questions from you guys but when 100+ questions quickly presented themselves, I changed tack and turned it into a two part “All your holistic dentistry questions” answered. So in this show, part 2, we talk:  Cavities and fillings Preventative oral health Miscellaneous trouble shoots from grinding to tongue ties to geographic spots and so much more! Head over to lowtoxlife.com/podcast for all the details.  Here are the questions answered in this second FAQ with Lewis and we twist and tangent on all things oral care in between:  On fillings and cavity protection:At a dentist a few years ago, my 5 yr old had 3 fillings told me it was bad luck and there was nothing I could do. Dietary improvement was my first thing. What else? I have tried using natural toothpastes and they all cause mouth ulcers and corners of my mouth to crack really bad? I really want to use natural toothpaste but I'm unsure which ingredient may be causing this? Any suggestions?? Thank you.I'd be interested to hear about what toothpaste (glycerine or no glycerine) and/or toothbrush (electric vs manual) he recommends for children. I've read so many different opinions on this topic, particularly in relation to the glycerine in toothpaste issue, so any brand recs would be great. would you mind asking Dr. Ehrlich if there is any actual benefit to using toothpaste, or is it just an added bonus to make your breath fresh and your mouth feel like it's had a good clean because you can "taste" the clean. I read somewhere recently that there's no real benefit to toothpaste, that it's the brushing and flossing that actually is the most important part of the process. On preventative oral health What does he think of Weston Price's research on teeth -diet prevents over crowding, don't remove wisdom teeth, root canals can cause heart disease?Does he believe vitamin d / k2 supplementation universally necessary for kids? How do you change your mouth microbiome, with symptoms such as bad breathe, metallic taste, white tongue, excessive saliva? I know there is a correlation with gut dysbiosis and the bacteria imbalance starting in the mouth. And working on the gut is key to changing the way the gut and body functions, but are there ways to change the mouth microbiome in order to get a head start on changing the gut microbiome.I have receding gums. I'm wondering if this is due to poor diet or brushing my gums too hard ( I like to get it really clean), and what natural remedies I could try before seeing a traditional dentist? Anything to help get kids to look after their teeth...?We've just been recommended to brush with kids fluoride toothpaste and then after rinsing pop more on the back molars that are showing signs of decay. Are there any alternatives? It's my 4yo with the issues. On trouble shooting miscellaneous issues What causes grinding and how to fix?  My son has a ‘geographic' spot on his tongue. ( changes location all the time) What could be the causes? Is it a sign of something more problematic? Teeth clenching and how to stop it! I'm having to wear a mouth guard at night and I've heard miss 4 grind her teethTongue tie - I've recently been told by a holistic dentist that I have a partial tongue tie - had no idea and I'm sure there are loads of people like me. She said it goes hand in hand with jaw clenching and teeth grinding. My question is how important is it to have corrected. I figure I've made it past 50 years of age without knowing - maybe I can let this one slide.Chromogenic bacteria, how does someone get this over night (or the dark coloured appearance anyway)and what's the best solutions for it? If you cannot go to a holistic dentist for whatever reason, what to look for in a dentist or dental practice?Love to know more about breathing and connection with the teeth I am reading that if we don't breathe correctly that's the reason our mouth is crowded etc? Mouth taping for kids. Can you do it? Who do you need to consult/see before it's considered appropriate? My 8 year old has a small jaw and not enough room for his teeth, he has poor teeth as well. his gums have white marks on them above the teeth, would love to know why his gums have these marks. We eat organic only, low tox, Whole Foods diet and lifestyle... can't work it out.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
This week I'm sharing a bit about what I did in my journey to finally realising my building was water damaged and moving home, as well as some of the decisions we made around leaving things behind, replacing them and NOT replacing anything that wasn't essential. I share how I cleaned the lego, the clothes and the furniture that we were taking and what sorts of products I used. At the end of the show I launch my first month long trial… The Low Tox life is always about gently building awareness around an aspect of life and stepping up where we can once we KNOW. This trial speaks to my desire to keep things spacious and light at home after all the decluttering as well as saving money to recover from the massive expenditure of couch and beds and moving and I'll be asking myself this: Is it useful, beautiful or necessary? My dentist is a legend. He happens to also be the author of his new book “A Life Less Stressed” and boy is it a cracking and important read. Discussing disease, inflammation, the nervous system, homeostasis, carbs, precautionary principle, allergy, pain, fats and proteins it's a comprehensive look at how we can use certain things to our advantage, how not all stress is ‘bad' and how to identify effectively what needs to fall away.Ron talks today with me about how this book came to be, gets deeply personal about his cancer journey, discusses the key principles of the book mentioned above and how to actually succeed at minimising stressors. We also tangent into mercury amalgam fillings and their removal - a question I get asked all the time and - well, frankly, not being an experienced dentist or a dentist at all for that matter - I felt it was the perfect opportunity to seize the day and ask Ron all about it.For the show notes, pop to lowtoxlife.com/podcastSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. “What would it look like for you to be fully recovered” asks Dr Robert Bray of his patients. Powerful question. How would it look for you? A trigger warning if you are sensitive to trauma, violence or suicide topics. Hugs to you and it might not be for you (although for the same reasons, it might very well be for you). This show explores Thought Field Therapy a form of ‘energy psychology’, something that Robert added to his tool kit since learning the Therapy from its creator, psychologist Dr Roger Callaghan, in 1996. Robert found that the therapy, a form of specialised “tapping” and muscle testing in combination with counselling and psychotherapy, added what was often missing for the people he saw stuck in loops with their physical or mental health. It’s a fascinating show where we cover how it can help first responders, military people in active service or retired, victims of abuse and people with chronic illnesses. If you join us on YouTube (yes, finally the show is on there now too!) you will see me try the therapy for myself with Robert taking me through a mini-session - your ever willing guinea pig ;-) If you’re in a negative mental or physical health loop, join me for this one. Very interesting and hopefully to someone out there, very helpful! Thank you to this month’s show sponsors for helping you make your low tox swaps easier: @ausclimate gives you 10% off their range for the whole of 2024, with brilliant Winix Air Purifiers, the best Dehumidifiers I’ve ever used, their energy-efficient heating range and their new air circulators! code LOWTOXLIFE https://bit.ly/ShopAusclimate@ediblebeautyau has a bumper Low Tox Swaps Aussie beauty offer with 40% off their huge Black Friday sale + extra freebies depending on your cart amount, such as the Body Whip, LED wand, Silk pillow case and mystery gifts - Code LOWTOXLIFE and you’ll see it as an extra 5% off their already loaded 35% off. Jessica Maguire is back on the show and while the first show we did was about the nuts and bolts of the nervous system, this week is a powerful exploration of the human experience, our responses, the signals of dysregulation we can look out for in ourselves and others, and the power of helping someone else regulate or having someone who can do that for us, through grief, work, school and just about any of life’s challenges. Main topics this week are: The Grief journeyOur Responses vs ‘who I am’Relationships - bringing our dysregulation with us! Clues to look for in your body and behaviors that point to dysregulationThe Online World and its contribution to escalating dysregulationThe nervous system dysregulation in the workplace and how it presents. Corrective experiences we can provide or seek out - what is truly ‘being there’ or having someone who is JUST ‘there’ and why is it so healing? SUCH a powerful show. Skin conditions and treatments. That is this week’s show with naturopathic doctor and herbalist Dr Julie Greenberg, founder of rootcausedermatology.com, helping clinicians get to the root of why skin presentations might be happening for that person and how to treat more holistically. She founded her clinic in LA, USA, The Center for Integrative & Naturopathic Dermatology Inc where she also sees patients to support them. We discuss: How we treat skin conditions today and how it’s a broken system, needing stronger and stronger topical treatments and injectibles over time, used on younger and younger patients than was initially considered safe. How we can free ourselves from feeling ‘bad’ for what we’ve done to treat our skin issues in the past and see a place for SOS while we work on the long game. The difference between eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis. How the gut and immune function are intertwined, and can then impact our skinThe sun, the bad wrap it gets, how it relates to the 2 different types of cancers called ‘skin cancers’ and what we need to be doing to have a preventative approach to skin cancers. We’ve done a few shows on skin issues in the past if you need more shows on skin, here they are: Asha Everts Part 1 and Part 2 Kiran Krishnan, microbiologist on leaky gut and skinLiezel Barnard on strengthening our skin preventatively And a brilliant masterclass we did on the “Skin Stress Cycle” with live Q&A with Dr Jude Lenart, is in our membership archive library - you can join the Low Tox Club any time for just $49AUD for the year and there are lots of lovely perks if you do! 600+ people can’t be wrong?Thank you to this month’s show sponsors for helping you make your low tox swaps easier: @ausclimate gives you 10% off their range for the whole of 2024, with brilliant Winix Air Purifiers, the best Dehumidifiers I’ve ever used and their new energy-efficient heating range. code LOWTOXLIFE https://bit.ly/ShopAusclimate@therahealth Nordic Naturals have a reputation as one of the purest, best-tested fish oil supplements. The most common question I get that comes up is about how to “clean” mold!? (Pro tip: switch to saying remove not ‘clean’ or ‘kill’.)Michael Pinto has been in the business of identifying harmful hazards in the home from mould to asbestos, to lead and more, for over 40 years, and now semi retired, I cheekily thought he might have time for me to data mine his experience - and he said yes! We cover:Knowing how detailed you need to go in your cleaning when it comes to mould and the people in your house (ie, do you have a ‘sensitised’ person) VacuumsClothsChemicalsSteam cleaning ins/outsAnd so much more… So, if you’ve ever wondered about how to thoroughly clean your home when it comes to finding a bit of surface mould, or when you’ve moved somewhere new to ensure it’s properly clean or maybe after remediation when you aren’t able to pay for the whole-home clean up? This one’s for you! More about our guest… Michael A. Pinto served as the CEO of Wonder Makers Environmental. Although based in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Michael’s acknowledged expertise in dealing with a wide variety of indoor environmental issues, as well as safety and health concerns, has led to helping clients around the world. With six books and over 230 published articles in his 45 years as a professional, Michael has specialized in “translating” difficult technical material to make it understandable to the layperson. Over his career Michael has developed hundreds of training programs and technical presentations; training over 12,000 students. As would be expected, Michael has a number of professional certifications including Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Safety Management Specialist (SMS), Registered Third-Party Evaluator (RTPE), Certified Mold Professional (CMP), Certified Forensic Operator (CFO), Fire Loss Specialist (FLS) And Environmental Risk Specialist (ERS). As with all things, I believe in finding people who can help us navigate the nuanced way forward - is there a way our kids can healthily grow up in public? Devorah Heitner PhD has been asking this with curiosity both as a parent and a researcher and in today’s show, we unpack exactly that question. Her book “Growing up in Public” is a must read so that we understand our kid’s social dynamics today better, and so that we know where boundary and protection are required, as well as curiosity and patience. Kids are growing up more in public than ever. While we discuss meaningful ways that we can ensure they get to live childhoods more connected to each other than they are to their screens, I genuinely feel it’s important to have a conversation about the world that exists and how best to navigate it, than to simply wish it weren’t like it was and ban everything. The tech algorithms favour fear and outrage and so nuanced explorations on this topic are hard to find. Please help me amplify it. Dr. Heitner’s work has appeared in the New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, and CNN Opinion. She has a Ph.D. in Media/Technology & Society from Northwestern University and has taught at DePaul and Northwestern. She is delighted to be raising her own teenager and she lives with her family in Chicagoland. Letting kids use phone during the school day? Bad idea. Using screens as babysitting to save on childcare costs? No judgement. It’s complicated with multiple things at play as to how many families got there. Kids needing more places to hang and connect than home or shopping centre mall? HECK yes. I hope you find the show useful. Alexx xThank you to this month’s show sponsors for helping you make your low tox swaps easier: @ausclimate gives you 10% off their range for the whole of 2024, with brilliant Winix Air Purifiers, the best Dehumidifiers I’ve ever used and their new energy-efficient heating range. code LOWTOXLIFE https://bit.ly/ShopAusclimate@blockbluelight_official gives you 20% off site-wide, including their brilliant red light panels, to help you achieve the perfect light balance in your home and for quality sleep, rest and repair. Show 400 - How did we get here!? Well, it took a few people to get this show to where it is today and I’ll list them below because if you’re reading this, you’re one of them. In the show today, I’ve chosen 4 excerpts from past shows that weave together in funny ways, once I listened to them all in a row… 10 or so minutes from each of these deep-from-the-archive shows that are every bit as necessary and useful today, as they were when I first published them.1. Bruce Lipton - on breaking the programs we downloaded very young, and changing your energy to change your life. 2. Charles Eisenstein - on self love quests being perhaps the wrong tactic, yet self love being the key to being free of judgement of the ‘others’ and carving a path to de-polarising our world. 3. Sage Magdalene - on the invitation nature gives us to have more reverence for the big things happening everyday around us that we don’t notice, and yet if we did? 4. Jade Miles - on Future Steading and how we can apply the principle of living aligned with a world that has a future, from wherever we are and whatever we can do to restore balance in our lives. I hope you enjoy these excerpts and I encourage you if you remember listening to it ‘back then’ to listen again. You, the listeners - no point making a podcast if no one shows up to listen! Our incredible guests across food, body, home, mind, family and environmental topics. Stevie my producer who’s been with me since the beginning.Norie and Ele on my team who help with coordinating the guests, research prep, prepping the podcast docs with all the info we need, moving files into folders, creating show notes, transcripts and social media tiles…Our sponsors who help the show happen weekly but also help you make your swaps with their ever-generous offers.Thank you to this month’s show sponsor for helping you make your low tox swaps easier: @ausclimate gives you 10% off their range for the whole of 2024, with brilliant Winix Air Purifiers, the best Dehumidifiers I’ve ever used and their new energy-efficient heating range. code LOWTOXLIFE https://bit.ly/ShopAusclimate@blockbluelight_official gives you 20% off site-wide, including their brilliant red light panels, to help you achieve the perfect light balance in your home and for quality sleep, rest and repair. Did you feel like kids connected with kids and adults with adults regarding food? Separate times, separate tables, dumbed-down ‘fun’ food? This week we are talking food and little people - Toddlers to be specific given the wonderful Luka from Book to Food has a new book available for pre-order and soon for real “Toddler to Table”. It is a stunner of a book but what I love most about the book and our conversation, as someone who spent years educating on family food in the earlier years of Low Tox Life is that we talked about: how people’s backgrounds and childhoods affect our views on foodOur own experiences of shift work - two reformed Up-And-Go breakfast gals - true story and how conveniences needed re-teaching/re-defining.Luka explains why she’ll never do a day on a plate and why it’s easier for her to put a big focus on food in her life - LOVE THAT THIS CAME UP - Ever felt guilty following homemaker accounts, food accounts or zero-waste peeps? Being a teen is harder than ever before and it’s showing in the stats and research. BUT, this is not about going down the fear road, nor is it all about crying “it’s social media” as an over simplified solution. We also need to do a LOT more to diversify the ‘success’ picture during school years, help them matter, feel the love and find themselves as they journey through individuation into adulthood. All while they huff at us, sometimes act out, show us rudeness and do things beyond our comprehension often - now is not the time to be offended, nor to come down hard.So what do we do as parents, carers, teachers and coaches? We go in curious and from a place of love, while learning from the best: Enter @maggiedentauthor - A powerFULL show I have listened back to it again already. Tell me what you got out of it once you’ve had a listen, Alexx xLow Tox Life - The Podcast available wherever you listen to podcasts - Celebrating 400 shows and 8 years this month! Maggie’s latest book, “Help Me Help My Teen” is available on Amazon AU: https://amzn.to/4cWGQDQ Thank you to this month’s show sponsors for helping you make your low tox swaps easier: @ausclimate gives you 10% off their range for the whole of 2024, with brilliant Winix Air Purifiers, the best Dehumidifiers I’ve ever used and their new energy-efficient heating range. code LOWTOXLIFE https://bit.ly/ShopAusclimate@blockbluelight_official gives you 20% off site-wide, including their brilliant red light panels, to help you achieve the perfect light balance in your home and for quality sleep, rest and repair. If you’ve been confused about hormone testing - this week’s show is here to help. @drleahhechtman PhD, takes us through hormone testing options for age, stage and situation, as well as things that impact the accuracy of a test. We cover: Saliva, Urine and Blood testing - when which one or all are helpful and for whom. What reference ranges are based on - and most of us aren’t IT 😳Pill effects at puberty & perimenopause (without shaming!) The constraints with the medicare model for test ordering and clinical significance, ie, a lot can be done before a crisis occurs that requires a medication. How urine testing can be your best guide when considering HRTHistamine and run-away estrogen - there’s usually a 3rd party reason beyond hormones that this pathway is activated. How progesterone is the good, reliable friend that keeps estrogen from too many wild parties! What you can achieve without spending any $$$ exploring your hormone health, up to the breadth of what one can do if you wanted to. How’s that for ground covered!? Dr Leah Hechtman (PhD) is a globally respected naturopathic clinician, a revered lecturer and a sought-after keynote speaker who is widely recognised for her expertise, receiving numerous referrals from specialists and fertility clinics on a global scale. Such a pleasure to have her back on the show. Hope you love it as much as we loved recording it for you, Alexx xThank you to this month’s show sponsors for helping you make your low tox swaps easier: @ausclimate gives you 10% off their range for the whole of 2024, with brilliant Winix Air Purifiers, the best Dehumidifiers I’ve ever used and their new energy-efficient heating range. code LOWTOXLIFE https://bit.ly/ShopAusclimate@blockbluelight_official gives you 20% off site-wide, including their brilliant red light panels, to help you achieve the perfect light balance in your home and for quality sleep, rest and repair. As promised: Part 2 is here, with microbiologist @kiranbiome and it is a deep dive into the mechanism for “leakiness” of our body’s barrier functions. He took my nightclub bouncer and ran with it and I think you’ll find more empowerment when it comes to understanding and working with issues related to:  Leaky GutLeaky SkinLeaky Brain …as we explore: Why does it happen? What’s going on with these issues? Why treating the symptoms is not the best way forward and how can we build healthier barriers and immune responses? Enjoy the show - Low Tox Life podcast is anywhere you like to listen to podcasts - send it to anyone experiencing inflammation - with gut issues, skin issues or cognitive symptoms. This week we talk MILK with @fat_pig_farm Matthew Evans - the dairy kind, the plant kind and the many aspects to consider when considering either. Do you consume dairy products? Do you have issues with lactose, casein or both? Do you think plant milks are nutritious and planet-friendly? Do you think plant milk has a lighter footprint? Do you think Raw milk is safe? Dangerous? We go everywhere on the topic of milk and Matthew’s research into the topic for his latest book, MILK, is thorough and revealing as well as appealing to the deep thinker and person who wants a truer food system. Matthew Evans is a Tasmanian food writer, television broadcaster and chef who lives and works on Fat Pig Farm, a soil-to-stomach regenerative farm and restaurant. He’s been the host of six series of Gourmet Farmer and two documentaries on SBS TV. Matthew is the author of 15 books on food, including On Eating Meat, and his latest cookbook, the updated and revised The Real Food Companion. His book SOIL is a hymn to the remarkable, and underappreciated bit of Earth that gifts us life. His most recent book, MILK, unpacks the truth and lies behind the original superfood.Matthew’s Website — https://fatpig.farm/ . His Books are also available on Amazon.com.Enjoy and let me know what you found most interesting about this exploration. Are you frustrated with the medical system when it comes to chronic illness? Perhaps frustrated with the obvious hold industry has over public service institutions? What if you had the power to cultivate a level of safety for your system that helped you feel more well and resilient in today’s world and less reliant on the system in the first place? Today we explore both of these with Dr Olivia Lesslar. Olivia and I discuss: There is a need for more nuance and deeper thinking in medicine today and in what the public takes to be ‘truth,’ whether that be believing something is a silver bullet fix, ‘bad food’, or ‘safe and effective medication’. We ALL need to think more. We look at the path from the research lab to product to clinician and how we can do better in that processWe look at how caring for patients has lost its way, so often reading for symptoms that match up with medication and not seeing the nuance or the opportunities to build a greater independence from needing external medication. We look at the conundrum for many: Complex illness requiring expert clinicians and cost often being prohibitive: Of course the doctors are worth it for all the study and experience they bring, but at the same time, often being a last resort, patients with chronic illness have limited funds. We look at safety signaling in the body and how we can cultivate a mindset of health by looking to the emerging and established evidence in neuro/immune connectionHow can I be less breakable and shakable? Working on that is one of the most powerful health cultivation focuses we can have. A powerFULL episode for all inspired towards a better model of healthcare, and a world with fewer people suffering chronic illness. Thank you to this month’s show sponsors for helping you make your low-tox swaps easier: @ausclimate gives you 10% off their range for the whole of 2024, with brilliant Winix Air Purifiers, the best Dehumidifiers I’ve ever used and their new energy-efficient heating range. code LOWTOXLIFE https://bit.ly/ShopAusclimate@waterscofilters From August 1 to September 15 you have 12% off all new @waterscofilters water filters, including their under-sink and shower filters.
