[audio src="https://www.ambientblog.net/mix/WinterSolstice3.mp3" controls /] 2021 is the third consecutive year the Dutch radio station Concertzender Nederland celebrates the winter solstice - the longest night of the year - with a full eight-hour night of ambient music. Divided into four segments, the selections are curated by radio producers Roel Janssen, Harrold Roeland, Bob Rusche, and myself. This mis is my contribution to this longest night edition. This includes a download option, as well as an (ambientblog-exclusive) 5.1 DTS surround version for those interested in extra sonic immersion. The previous editions can also still be found here: Winter Solstice 1 and Winter Solstice 2. For those that want to relive the full 8-hour experience, the full-length Concertzender radio broadcasts can still be streamed from their website: the 2019, 2020, and 2021 editions remain available for your on-demand entertainment. This mix is the closing part of the broadcast, at a time that most people are still asleep (between 05:00 and 07:00 am). But it is not intended to induce sleep: it is way too 'active' for that. I created this with the intention to manipulate your dreams when you're asleep or half-awake at the time of the broadcast. In that case, it shouldn't be played too loud or you'll probably not be able to sleep at all. When listening on-demand, at different times, sleep is not an issue. Just enjoy the ride and let the sequence guide you. But be sure to sit back, relax, and forget about time. This mix is created from bits, pieces, samples, and short fragments of music that deserve to be explored in its full original form; only very few tracks are represented in their full original length. Just imagine yourself sitting in a local bar at the end of the day. A bit tired, your head full of thoughts. The murmuration of the people around you slowly gets blurry as you drift off. Your thoughts begin to wander, memories are mixed with fantasies and places you never even visited. Until now. [audio src="https://www.ambientblog.net/mix/Ambient_Daydream.mp3" controls /] I feel VERY privileged that Dr. Ir. Stéphane Pigeon gave me his (exceptional) permission to use the sound generators/music he created for myNoise.net - a site that has long been among my favorites. This mix is different from most earlier Ambientblog.net mixes (since all sounds come from one single source), so here is a somewhat more extensive introduction: About myNoise.net myNoise.net is a site that everyone even remotely interested in sound or ambient music should have bookmarked. It is built by Dr. Ir. Stéphane Pigeon to create "beautiful noises to mask the noises you don't want to hear", offering 'sound blockers' in every way thinkable. The sound 'generators' are structured in a very functional way: I need to focus, I want to sleep, I need to calm down, My room is too quiet, I suffer from Tinnitus, I'm trying to put my baby asleep, etc., etc. You'll find sounds ranging from synthetic sound blockers (like White Noise) to natural/environmental/industrial soundscapes (even the subtle sound of an office, for those that work from home but miss the sound of their colleagues). But myNoise is much more than just a set of 'functional' sound generators. You'll also find synthetic, experimental, and fantasy sounds to trigger your imagination. And apart from that, there are many musical options to choose from. There is so much to find and experiment it could make a lot of your (ambient) albums redundant once you found this site and got hooked just like me. Just check the index page to get an idea. But that's not all. The site also has an incredible level of interactivity. Each sound generator has 10 sliders that the visitor can use to set to their own preference. You can also choose to use predefined presets, speed control, or root note selection. Or, if you cannot choose yourself, set the sliders to use random animation. And I mustn't forget to mention that there is also a calibration tool, with which you can adjust the settings to compensate for your personal hearing loss or your headphone's frequency response.If you feel adventurous, you can also experiment by opening different generators in multiple tabs in your browser and see how they fit together. Personally, I am always amazed by the sound quality on this site, its flexibility, the way the different details match together, and the way all of this is programmed in a very user-friendly way. The most frustrating thing in preparing it was that I could hardly choose the sounds to use: there are só many possible options to choose from! So I decided to stay close to the 'ambientblog mix concept' (if that is a thing) in trying to create a 'sonic daydream'. Ambient Daydream tells a story created with myNoise generators. But, more important: I hope that it serves as an introduction to the site itself: because the réal power of myNoise is that you can adjust it to what works best for you. Just like all other music releases, the audio recordings on myNoise.net are copyrighted. They are nót free to use, though some people seem to think so simply because they are presented online.   [audio src="https://www.ambientblog.net/mix/soundwave.mp3" controls /] Joseph Aleo started his SoundWave podcast series as a way of "coping with the stress and isolation of life under COVID-19": "Ambient, classical, experimental and instrumental music was the only thing that was speaking the truth of my new life whereas pop music, tv shows, and movies seemed particularly vapid." The (weekly) podcast series has seen 52 editions until now, featuring many known and unknown contributors. Among the more familiar names, you'll find Robert Rich, Dronny Darko, DJ Food, ProtoU, OfftheSky, Less Bells, Rhucle, and (last week) Robin 'Scanner' Rimbaud. It's my 'honour' to open the second year of this series with my contribution. We can of course only hope that the series will continue for musical reasons, and not because of the pandemic. Clicking through the list of contributions you'll find that most of them are what I call 'mixtape-style' compilations: a 'head-tail'-mix of (full) tracks. Traditionally, my (Ambientblog) mixes are different (which does not mean necessarily 'better', by the way) in that they incorporate many sampled parts of tracks (a full-length track is either an exception or a very short track itself), mixed in a layered collage-style. I always try to shuffle the fragments of the collage in a way that they seem to melt together and thus start telling a different story. Whether this is successful or not can only be determined by the listener. This mix is simply named after the podcast itself: SoundWave. It is a happy coincidence that it literally starts with 'waves' - sonically manipulated by Jos Smolders - and ends with the same waves morphing into the sound of a cheering crowd. Different kinds of soundwaves are all around us, every moment. Sometimes we're aware, most of the time we are not. For those that could not stay awake the full night, the full broadcast remained available online (and it still is!). To celebrate the longest night in this (remarkably dark) year, we decided to repeat this 'Solstice Celebration'. But, for practical purposes, not on the longest night itself but one night earlier since that is the more convenient night from Saturday into Sunday. This time, too, the full (7-hour) set will remain available online, but here on ambientblog I present my own contribution - the two hours that closed this special ambient night. When compiling this set, I tried to keep in mind that this was intended to be listened to in the deepest and darkest of the night. But when I first heard Christine Ott's Comma, and its Snowdrops variation, I felt that this piece should be the starting point of a new mix. And in the end, it also became the final piece of the same mix - although both appearances combine the two versions in reverse order. Perhaps somewhat like a movie's intro and end credits. I did not start this mix with a specific theme in mind. Its title only occurred to me after it was completed because it reflected its mood: a somewhat melancholy journey that fits the end of this remarkable year. When we talked (or rather: mailed) about creating a mix together, we decided not to go for a back-to-back exchange, but gave ourselves an objective without knowing where this would lead to: 5 Minutes each turn. Start with a 5minute track, increase the sample count each turn (next turn 2, next turn 3, next turn 4…) until we reach 60 minutes… (last 5 minutes contain 6 samples each turn). See what happens. Here is the result: a mix that starts with two single tracks but gets more complex, layered and more adventurous with every turn. There are some quite unexpected turns here, so I hope the listener can follow us in this journey. He also wrote this nice introduction to this mix, which I just copy here: I like to think that I put a lot of thought and effort into these mixes. Hopefully, the mix as a whole is greater than the sum of its parts. But what I do is nothing compared to the transformative touch that Peter Van Cooten brings to his mixes.Each mix is a unique work of art. Peter rarely lets a track play in its complete form. Instead, he uses smaller samples and deftly weaves the tracks in and out of each other. Sometimes 2,3, or 4 tracks play simultaneously, creating something new from different elements. In this mix, he uses an incredible 41 tracks! Here's what Peter has to say about using so many short samples: "Sometimes I feel a bit embarrassed about using such short samples and/or editing the tracks (of these 41, only 8 are used in their complete form). It's a bit like cutting up the Mona Lisa to create a landscape patchwork with the fragments ;-).  But on the other hand, this is what I feel makes these mixes unique. Taken out of their context and in relation to other fragments, the music sometimes tells a different story." This mix is a bit darker than most of my (= Dave Michuda's, PvC) mixes. But it's dark in an interesting way, not in a droney, dissonant way. The mix has a very cinematic feel and combined with the cover art and title I can imagine drone shots of empty streets and newspapers blowing across the square. Peter was hesitant about the name and the cover art. He says: "It may be too closely linked to the current worldwide crisis, but on the other hand I have tried to think of another name or context but the uncertain times seem to be too dominant to think of another name I could give it. The funny thing is, that if you listen back most of my mixes have a rather dark edge to them. There's always a lot of 'tension/release'. But in this case, it seems there's a bit more 'tension' than 'release'. Oh well, sign of the times..." Cheers, and stay safe. It marks the start of Winter (even though it is also called "Midwinter"), but gradually the nights will slowly get shorter as to indicate spring will be coming, eventually. For the 2019 Winter Solstice, Dutch Radio station Concertzender Nederland (for which I compile the monthly DreamScenes series) programmed an 8-hour ambient music special from 23:00 until 07:00 (11pm to 7am). That's a good night's sleep for most people!The 8 hours of ambient were compiled by 4 radio-show producers: Roel Janssen, Harrold Roeland, Bob Rusche, and myself. My contribution was scheduled to close the night: from 05:00 to 07:00 (5am to 7am). For the context of this ambient night, I created a mix that is somewhat different from most Ambientblog.net mixes - after all, this was intended to be broadcast in the deepest hours of the darkest night of the year. So this one is more drone-oriented for the most part, slower, less 'dynamic' and less 'intense'. This is especially true for the first hour. It opens with Suzanne Vega performing one of the most beautiful lullabies ever written (from 1964's Mary Poppins), challenging you to 'stay awake' but at the same time making it virtually impossible to do so (especially at 5am). Followed by an hour of deep drone tracks that seem to stretch the time to (at least) three times its length. The first hour closes with a haunting track by Broeder Dieleman, a tribute to the dutch priest and sculptor Omer Gielliet. It is sung it the local Zeeuws dialect which loses some of its strength when translated - but the key phrase here roughly translates to: "first I drank from the tap but now I drink straight from the source." The second hour of this mix was the last hour of this 8-hour night. Even though it is still completely dark at 7am, it was my intention to slowly build up to awakening to a new day. The first half of this hour prolongs the sleepy drones, but Robert Henke's Studies of Thunder indicates the change from deep sleep to lighter sleep, slowly becoming aware of the surroundings again.The key track here is, of course, Fovea Hex' We Dream All The Dark Away in the beautifully floating remix from Abul Mogard. It's like coming back to life, letting the light back in slowly. There is no telling how many listeners made it through the entire radio-broadcast - awake, half-asleep, or sleeping. I don't assume many listeners made it to the end of this 8-hour broadcast in full awareness. I can only imagine how the dreams of those that fell asleep may have been guided by the music playing in the background. I am very proud to have contributed to this special night on Concertzender Nederland. Not many radio stations are brave enough to schedule an 8-hour ambient night. Also, it is not a showcase with full album tracks (you may want to check the DreamScenes editions for those). It is a 'create-your-own-movie' soundtrack with some rather intense climaxes. And 42 track fragments in less than one hour - almost none of those in full length: all tracks are cut-up, fragmented, edited, layered and re-assembled (but never altered sonically) - like creating a collage from torn pictures. This also means that none of the parts represents the artists' original intention (I hope they still can appreciate what I do here). For further exploration, the release details of the fragments are provided so you can check out the original full versions and support the artist wherever possible. Radical Candor - Mix sequence The mix title, Radical Candor, comes from the (management) philosophy described by former Google and Apple executive Kim Scott. In short, it argues that feedback (on behaviour) is most effective if it is challenging but at the same time shows that you care. A music collage is anything but a management philosophy of course. But still I felt there was a resemblance: the mix is 'caring' at times but can also be quite 'challenging' to the listener. At least, that was my intention. Anyway: I also just liked the way the words sound: Radical Candor. So here it is. [audio src="https://www.ambientblog.net/mix/Delusional.mp3" controls /] When I started working on this mix, its working title was Wonderlust, simply because I liked that word: a variation on wanderlust ('a desire to travel') which the Urban Dictionary describes as 'the desire to be in a constant state of wonder'.But as the mix progressed, the title didn't fit very well. There were too many dark and unsettling moments... moment that may evoke their own 'state of wonder' but of a completely different kind. The Questions in Anja Garbarek's track are crucial to this mix and gave it its title: a few simple questions to diagnose severe psychotic disorders, a delusional state of mind. There may be quite a few of these delusional moments in this mix, but they are alternated with moments of joy in an almost melodramatical equilibrium. For me, personally, a mix has the most impact when it feels like I'm watching a movie. With ups, downs, some drama, sentiment, moment of joy, climax and anticlimax. And yes: tension and release.So then, if this was a movie, the Jon Hopkins track would be the last scene, and the Metropole Orchestra (or  Metropool Orkest as they are named in Holland) version of Brian Eno's classic track 'An Ending' would be the track under the end credits rolling. End credits crediting no less than 45 fragments crammed together in a 59 minute soundscape compilation of music that was never conceived to be heard in a context like this. Some listeners probably won’t get past it – and if they quit at that point, they’ll miss the 40 minutes of associative transitions in the rest of the mix.But I personally really love the juxtaposition of this dreamy love song between the feverish mumbling of David Sylvian and Jóhann Jóhannsson’s track merging into the almost frightening climax of Stefan Wesolowski.To quote Woody Brown (the ‘industry expert of mixing’): “use your ears, not your prejudices”! But, jokes aside, this ís a serious mix. With the occasional exception, most of the music in this mix is heavily mutilated: the original tracks are cut-up, shortened, fragmented, edited - often using only a fragment from a track that originally is much longer. A collage like this takes the sound out of its original context to serve its own purpose. That is not meant disrespectful, please let me emphasize this again... Mix-wise, 2017 was a quiet year: it has been quite some time ago since I published my last 'real' mix (Mind Awake, Body Asleep) - partly due to concentrating on DreamScenes,  which got a re-birth as a monthly radio show on Concertzender.nl). But in the end of 2017 a long-standing plan finally materialised: a 'collaboration mix' with  Mike 'Headphone Commute' Lazarev!It is especially nice to start 2018 with this occasion, since Headphone Commute celebrates its 10th anniversary this year! We had no clear concept for this mix when we started, other than 'each turn takes 5 minutes, we'll stop at 60, and we'll see where it gets us'. We were unaware of each other's tracklist (apart from what our ears told us).The result is a thrilling ride, where each part is a reaction to the previous section.Not exactly what we'd call an 'ambient' mix, because it's extremely dynamic. Sections may range from deep sleep sections to exuberant enthusiasm - hence 'Bipolar'.It's like a full life's story comprised in one hour..
