In this episode, I hosted Toon Koppelaars to talk about smart database architecture. Toon has been part of the Oracle eco-system since 1987. He is currently a member of Oracle's Real World Performance team. Toon is a long-time champion of using the database in a smart way, i.e. using the database as a processing engine. In this session Toon goes through a bit of history demonstrating how the database has been used in the past 30 years: at times it was a processing engine and at times it was just a persistance layer. Toon then goes on to explain that the persistence layer approach, where all business logic is implemented outside the database has serious drawbacks in the areas of initial application development, ongoing maintenance, and most notably in the area of performance and scalability. In this episode, I hosted Bob Evans the founder of Evans Strategic Communications. Bob is the the former Chief Communications Officer of Oracle. He writes the Cloud Wars series for the Forbes Magazine where he ranks the top 10 cloud vendors. As cloud computing surges into the mainstream and becomes the backbone of enterprise IT, hundreds of cloud vendors are fighting for customer dollars. Which ones are framing their cloud services in terms of what businesses want and need, versus pounding their chests over how wonderful their technology is? Will the big incumbents such as IBM, SAP and Oracle be able to pivot to the cloud with enough capability and urgency to meet the intense requirements of modern digital businesses? Which top cloud vendors are positioning cloud in a silo, and which are blending cloud vision with AI, cognitive, machine learning, and more? In this webinar Bob Evans addressed these and other high-priority issues for IT buyers and decision-makers. Hi. My name is Yalim Gerger. I am the founder of the ProHuddle podcast. At ProHuddle.com, our website, we host engaging live webinars with IT professionals. These are the audio recordings of these webinars. In this episode, I talked to Lukas Eder about jOOQ, the open source dual licensed product which implements SQL as a type safe domain-specific language in Java. Lukas is founder and CEO of Data Geekery GmbH, the company behind jOOQ. Lukas is a Java Champion and an Oracle ACE. He is happy to share his knowledge at various conferences, JUGs and his blog at: https://blog.jooq.org/ Java does not provide an API to directly support the expressiveness and power of SQL. All attention is given to object-relational mapping and abstractions on a higher level, such as OQL, HQL, JPQL, CriteriaQuery. jOOQ is a dual-licensed Open Source product filling this gap. It implements SQL itself as a type safe domain-specific language in Java. jOOQ is a good choice in a Java application where SQL and its proprietary features of the database in use are important. It shows, how a modern domain-specific language can greatly increase developer productivity, internalising SQL into Java. In this episode, I hosted Oracle ACE Oren Nakdimon to talk about how to upgrade an Oracle-based application without downtime using the Edition Based Redefinition feature. Oren is an Oracle ACE with more than 20 years of experience with Oracle-based systems, as a developer, DBA, manager and instructor. Oren gained lots of knowledge about databases, Oracle in particular, and likes sharing it - by blogging at http://db-oriented.com In this session Oren talks about Oracle's Edition-Based Redefeniton feature. One of most common reasons to avoid database development is the belief that an application upgrade in the database causes downtime. Many IT departments avoid development in PL/SQL specifically for this reason. However, nothing can be further from the truth. On the contrary, Oracle Database provides one of the most bullet proof ways to upgrade an application without any downtime: Edition Based Redefinition (EBR) EBR is a powerful and fascinating feature of Oracle, that enables application upgrades with zero downtime, while the application is actively used and operational. In this episode, I hosted Joshua D. Drake to to talk about PostgreSQL. Joshua is an Open Source Consultant specializing in Linux and PostgreSQL. He has been consulting on PostgreSQL since 1996. PostgreSQL is not very well known among Oracle developers and DBA’s. Yet, the skill set of an Oracle Developer and an Oracle DBA is easily portable to PostgreSQL. Even if your organization is an Oracle customer there are many use cases where PostgreSQL can be an affordable alternative to the Oracle Database. In this session, Joshua discusses the in and outs, ups and downs of migrating from Oracle to PostgreSQL. In this episode, I hosted Markus Winand to talk about database optimizers. Markus teaches organizations how to use databases efficiently. He covers both aspects: the development time to accomplish a task using SQL as well as optimizing the runtime of the final solution. He also published the book "SQL Performance Explained" and is currently working on his next book, which is being published on an ongoing basis at http://modern-sql.com. In this session Markus talked about database optimizers. In its quest for an optimal execution plan, the optimizer is jailed into a cage laid out by the SQL query and the physical database design. As per definition, the optimizer can only find the best execution plan within this cage—not necessarily the absolutely best way to get the result. In this session, Markus shows how indexing affects this cage and talks about how to shape the search space to bring the best execution plan within the optimizer’s reach. In this episode, I hosted Pramod Sadalge, principal consultant at ThoughtWorks to talk about NoSQL. At ThoughtWorks Pramod enjoys the rare role of bridging the divide between database professionals and application developers. He is usually sent in to clients with particularly challenging data needs, which require new technologies and techniques. In this session Pramod talked about NoSQL in two phases: In the first phase, the talk focuses on core concepts needed to understand NoSQL databases, NoSQL data models, in particular the role of aggregates and the consequences of schema-less models, options for distribution and the consequences of maintaining consistency. In the second phase, the talk focuses on implementation details and looks at some representative databases so you can get a feel for how real NoSQL databases work using Riak, MongoDB, Cassandra, and Neo4J and also looks at how to implement evolutionary design with schema migration -- an essential requirement even with schema-less databases. In this episode, I hosted Dr. Balaji Srinivasan founder of 21 about how to monetize any database with Bitcoin Balaji is the CEO and cofounder of 21, which has raised more than $116M in funding. He holds a BS, MS, and PhD in Electrical Engineering and an MS in Chemical Engineering from Stanford. He taught data mining, statistics, and computational biology in the Department of Statistics at Stanford University. 21 (http://www.21.co) has developed software (also called 21) that allows you to get bitcoin on any device, add bitcoin micropayments to any app with one line of code, and start earning bitcoin on every HTTP request. It essentially allows you to build a "machine web" of computers autonomously discovering, buying from, and selling to each other. In this session Balaji talks about topics such as: What is bitcoin? What is the blockchain? Why should an IT Professional care? How is it going to impact Enterprise IT? How can businesses benefit from this upcoming new technology? Where do you even start to learn about bitcoin? If you'd like to watch the recording of this webinar, or be notified of upcoming webinars, please register at http://prohuddle.com.
In this episode, I hosted Christy Maver and Scott Purdy from Numenta to talk about machine intelligence with streaming data. Across every industry, we are seeing an exponential increase in the availability of streaming, time-series data. The real-time detection of anomalies has significant practical application. Finding anomalies in such data can be very difficult, given the need to process data in real time, and learn while simultaneously making predictions. With the increasing variety of streaming data sources, automated deployment—without manual parameter tuning—is also becoming important. Numenta’s online sequence memory algorithm, called Hierarchical Temporal Memory (HTM), has been used to detect anomalies in IT monitoring, human behavior, the stock market, geospatial data, and more. This webinar will introduce this novel technique, demonstrate its broad applicability, and cover performance details from a published benchmark designed for real-time anomaly detection.
