How Do You Speak to Yourself? | Words Matter

Today, we are exploring the power of words, especially the words we use when talking to ourselves. I'm going to share some tips on moving from belittling language to empowering phrases that you can use in your self-dialogue and conversations with others. One of my favorite things about coaching clients is listening and noticing what words they repeat the most and then pointing out how often their own words are working against them. Our words express our subconscious beliefs. They also express our thoughts, and thoughts become things. We put our words into the universe, and they are reflected back to us. Do you speak to yourself the way you would to your best friend, mom, child, or spouse, or are you much harsher, a tyrant to yourself? I invite you to raise your awareness of the words you use. In Africa, the Big Five are what everyone wants to see on safari. They are the big five game animals: the lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and African buffalo. In this episode of Real Men Feel, I share the Big Shitty Five - the most disempowering words and phrases we can all avoid for a better life. Downsizing Part 1 | The Great Shedding of Stuff

I recommend watching this episode instead of only listening to it, as I share some of my downsizing journey and give a tour of my home. We are preparing to move to a house 2,000 square feet smaller than the one we've lived in for the past 21 years. Listen in to discover how my father's sharing of Buddism made me think life sucks then you die. Also, learn how the experience of donating, selling, and trashing our possessions has been so far. Do you own your stuff, or does your stuff own you? I wish you successful detachment. Positive Male Role Models | Who Taught You How To Be A Man?

Earlier today, I was part of a Let's Talk Fabulous panel discussing positive male role models. I enjoyed that conversation so much that I want to share more in a motor-mouth 10-minute brain dump. Topics Include What male role models did you see/have while growing up? What do you think are traits of a positive male role model? If the person who taught you what it means to be a man, through their words or actions, was a miserable bastard -- why would you continue to follow their example? Before I invited you to the show, did you already consider yourself a positive male role model? What are some challenges you see men going through today?  Any advice or tips for men who are trying to do/be better? What do you want women to know? How can women support you in your experience of being the best man you can be? How can men support each other? Too many men would rather be right than be happy. Be willing to be wrong. What Is Failure? | More Than You Think

I've often called myself a failure. But why? Why does something not turning out the way I wanted it to become my identity? It all comes down to the ego. Today, I explore definitions and perceptions of failure and ways to reframe it. Failure can be a valuable lesson. We can fail forward into something better with the right mindset. In my experience, when I'm depressed, my self-judgment is much harsher than usual, and I see a history of nothing but failures. That is not true. It is a very distorted lens. What if you could let the label of failure dissolve? You can. Don't be attached to one specific outcome. Be open to all outcomes and results. We live in a Universe of infinite possibilities. Picking Up The Pieces | Life After Depression

Today, I share many of the subjects I've been journaling about in the last few days. Subjects including past patterns, current patterns that I haven't figured out yet, and challenges of all-or-nothing thinking. I open up about my self-judgment, spiritual experiences, psych meds, and reactions to being called a positive male role model. I also contemplate what I'm addicted to that keeps my hellish patterns going. Over my adult life, I've tried meditation, counseling, personal growth, energy work, spiritual healing... I've never done all of them at any particular time. I've always expected one thing to cover all I need. Then, at times, I've chosen to do NONE of them and am somehow surprised to find myself at the bottom again. I must want to be at the bottom of all my possible moods and outlooks. But why? I'm at a point when I need to use all the methods that might help me simultaneously. In this episode, I also share one prominent danger of feeling better when you have an all-or-nothing mindset. One lesson I must keep learning is that healing and growth are not linear and never complete. You are never complete. We are always works in progress. Value the small steps forward. Discover the practices that help you, and don't let them go. Be willing to ask for help. Be willing to live. WARNING: This episode discusses suicidal thoughts and attempts. Mental Health Awareness Month | Suicidal Procrastination

WARNING: This episode discusses suicidal thoughts and attempts. If you are in a crisis, do not listen to this.  Please call or text 988 to be connected to trained counselors who are part of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline network. If you are outside of the US, please search for suicide prevention in your country.  You matter! Please choose life. After a year-long gap, much of it spent in a deep depression and with lots of suicidal ideation, I'm back. The best way to prevent suicide is to talk about suicide. So I'm doing that while also exploring why I wasn't willing to speak for so long, suicidal procrastination, and worthiness. I don't feel great about this episode. I hope it has some value in it. I know I could not have said what I shared today two days ago without crying, so perhaps all the necessary value. Regular Guy Chat with Billy

“Value family over everything, over everything,” says Billy Potter, the Zen Plumber. On today’s episode, host Andy Grant and special guest Billy dive into the intricacies of families and how unconditional love trumps all. They dive deep on the many ways a father’s role during childhood can dramatically impact our perception of the world. Billy opens up about his father’s drug problems and how substance abuse may test a family, but does not prevent them from coming out stronger in the end. He explains that the strongest and toughest men will always maintain a soft spot for their children, which he relates to today, having three children of his own. Billy shares the most important lessons he has learned from his father and how he has grown as a person because of them. He now refers to his father as the best man he has ever known. Tune into this week's episode of Real Men Feel for a conversation with Billy Potter about seeing the best in your father, understanding the importance of feeling safe and loved in your family unit, and why valuing family over everything is the motto so many people live by. Quotes • “People are more valuable than stuff and things.” (4:10-4:13) • “Are there some specific things you can name that you learned from your father?” “To value family over everything, over everything, you know, money and stuff and that kind of junk. When I say family, there are many friends that are right in that circle I'd drop anything for.” (12:59-13:24) • “My dad, for the tough guy that he was, he hugged us all the time.” (20:55-20:58) • “It was true unconditional love going both ways.” (21:45-21:50) • “We were drowned in Disney movies, my dad was a fanatic. Pollyanna is an old classic Disney, if you've ever seen it. I mean it's an old one. Before my time even, I think. But I remember watching that time and time again, and maybe the whole positive thing comes from… There is a thing called the Glad Game in that movie. Alright, and whenever things are bad, you just gotta find a reason, gotta find the good in it. You gotta find a reason to be glad you are in whatever situation you are in. And I always think of that whenever… Cuz people say that to me all the time.” (23:20-24:03) • “I wish more men knew that there was more value in them than just working.” (35:43-35:46) Links Connect with Billy Potter: https://www.facebook.com/billy.potter.33671 Connect with Andy and the Real Men Feel Podcast: Instagram | @realmenfeelshow & @andy_grant Personal Website | theandygrant.com for coaching, healing, and book info!
