Since independence 61 years ago Sierra Leoneans have done little to impact any meaningful, structural transformation because there are issues of grave relevance that are not being given the attention these need.  Of course, since independence, the country has been encysted by this culture because the intellectual class has not sat back to do a genuine introspection that will produce a sustainable identity of nationhood built around the social psychology of collective emancipation. The mentality of divide and individualism is a deep-rooted challenge now becoming the crisis of the nation.  Why is it as it is and what needs to be done are the issues to discuss and shall be done in several episodes starting this week?
Sierra Leone is a 73000 km² country on the bend of the West African coast in the Atlantic region. Thus she is in an equidistant position making it possible to fly a maximum of 8 hours to any major airport on the Atlantic as well as to major airports in east, north and southern Africa in 5 hours direct. By sea, any major seaport on the Atlantic can be reached between 14 and 16 days.   Sierra Leone also has the largest natural deep-water harbour in all of Africa and the third in the world. The port area that can conveniently accommodate sea vessels of average size is from Kissy at the former Texaco terminal to the back of the police hospital at the kingdom by the Prince of Wales school. This means the port of Freetown has the potential to handle over 250 average size ships and have another 100 out on the sea at any point in time. This gives her the potential to be the key stevedoring port of west Africa and especially serve inland or landlocked countries which justifies a railway o serve the westAficna subregion. This potential can only be realised if a number of human and physical infrastructures are first put in place. This and how it can be done is what shall be discussed in this talk show.
Governance is a social contract and two-way process. Both are influenced and a product of the social perceptions if not the culture of the society in which the institution exists. In Sierra Leone, a culture of governance that is more of a mixture of pre and post-colonial perceptions and attitudes has been a passive factor influencing the growth and development of first nationhood and next to a strong and sustainable economic foundation that can proper development. Sixty-one years after independence with vast resources, Sierra Leone still remains a poverty-ridden, aid-dependent country. Why and how this can be mitigated is what shall be the focus of this talk show.
It is now clear Sierra Leone is a failed state because of a lack of Trust and Integrity in every arm of Government. The People are the final arbitrators of this but need to step up to understand the risks involved in continuing to do politics as usual.
Governance and cohabitation in the society plus all other forms of Human coexistence exist and are a factor of trust. Development is cumulative of all collective thoughts and actions. Thus Trust by, for and of each member of any social group is a key to how fast that social group can subscribe and contribute to change. This podcast looks at how these apply to Sierra Leone a small but potentially rich country in west Africa which as at now is in acute påoverty because of lakc of trust in governance and general coexistence.
In continuation on the issues of how we think and our sociological makeup affect our development s Individuals, family, communities and even countries, this topic. Though the topic might read arrogant to a lot of people yet it is time we begin to examine how these sociological traits affect our progress as a people who consider themselves as Sierra Leoneans.
“Man is made or unmade by himself; in the armoury of thought he forges the weapons by which he destroys himself; he also fashions the tools with which he builds for himself heavenly mansions of joy and strength and peace. By the right choice and true application of thought, man ascends to the Divine Perfection; by the abuse and wrong application of thought, he descends below the level of the beast. Between these two extremes are all the grades of character, and man is their maker and master.” ― James Allen, As a Man Thinketh Development is the product of collective and usually unnoticed acts of members of a social group. The social group begins from the unitary home to community to geopolitical regions in which the people are considered to have a common identity, aspiration and above all respect for the Humanity and intellect of each member. When and where this is absent, the social group becomes dysfunctional and social injustice, marginalization and poverty take over. Since 1924 a condition of class conflict was ushered into the once decentralised but united governance system we now know as Sierra Leone which is in fact a part of a broader polity called the Koya Kingdom that covered the geopolitical region we now call Mano river Union. What are some of the effects, Norms and Value systems instituted and how is are these the root factor and forces behind the underdevelopment of a resource-rich 73000 km square?
