If you spend any time on social media, you see certain words circulating more often surrounding mental health. Words like anxiety, depression, narcissist, OCD, PTSD, trigger, and gaslighting. These terms and disorders are used to self diagnose based on watered down definitions and keywords. Dr. Emily Ferrara joins me to bring some clarity to the conversations. She describes disorders from a clinical perspective and the defining characteristics of them.
We also chat through why I've chosen not to offer trigger warnings in my episodes, and ways to self regulate when you DO feel triggered.
Dr. Emily Ferrara is a licensed professional counselor and executive coach, and founder of Simplify Life Counseling + Coaching. In her practice, she works with high level executives and professional women to grow, develop and accelerate as marketplace leaders. Her goal is to help professionals, specifically women, to experience greater fulfillment at work and in life. Using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), she aims to be her client's guide along the way as they learn about the connection between their brain, their feelings and their behaviors.

Single ladies, this conversation is for you! Beth and Abby are two gals rocking singlehood but in different stages. Abby is 23 and Beth is 43, so they've had varying experiences in the dating world. We chat about life in the apps--did you know there is a secret society where women get the tea on local guys before heading out on a date? When we get on the topic of having kids, I share my most shameful parenting experience, solidifying Abby's desire to NOT have children. Needless to say, this conversation is full of drama you don't want to miss.

Transitioning into motherhood is often defeating, lonely, and chaotic. It does a number on our relationships and leaves us thinking IS THIS NORMAL?! Andrea Burkly LCPC , PMH-C is a mental health therapist who specializes in working with women through pregnancy and postpartum, and helping couples through the parenting years because... it's a lot!
It was her own experience of working with a counselor – first through the trial of postpartum depression, and then through the day-to-day challenges of modern womanhood – that reignited her desire to turn her personal passion for wellness into a full-time career.
She is also the co-host of the Honest Women podcast, where they take topics that come up all the time in therapy (aka, LIFE) and discuss them. It's the podcast equivalent of drinks with your best mom-friends, if you best mom-friends just happened to be therapists! They laugh, feel some feels, drop some f-bombs, and revel in the fact that no matter what we are facing as modern women, we are not alone! New episodes drop every Wednesday.

This episode is near and dear to my heart because I introduce you to my best friend, Taylor. When Taylor and I met, she was in the throes of unraveling a messy relationship that began with her being groomed by a man in leadership when she was 14. It eventually turned into a tangled web of lies, sexual abuse, and shame.
We talk through how our friendship played a roll, how she eventually freed herself from it all, and what she hopes her story is for others now.

Where are my self-proclaimed workaholics? I've been guilty of putting my head down and plowing through life trying to get to the next milestone. Alexandria was at the top of the success ladder when one phone call changed her life forever. While her health had to become her priority after a breast cancer diagnosis, she realized all the things she was striving for, while great, didn't lead to happiness.

If you've experienced pain or hurt at the hands of a religious institution, I think you'll find Jodi's story impactful and encouraging. Jodi was raised in the Institute in Basic Life Principles (IBLP). Sound familiar? IBLP is the same cult featured in the documentary Shiny Happy People following the Duggar family. Jodi recounts her experience, but more importantly, the impact it's had on her faith, marriage, and parenting.
