Visit the website to learn more about the non-profit organization, its mandate, and outreach.Waltraude Stehwien’s artistic sensibilities run so deep it is as if they form the very makeup of her DNA.  Her earliest inspiration was her father who was a visionary and a well-respected puppeteer in Germany.  Waltraude wanted nothing more than to follow in his footsteps and she did just that. Her family survived the turmoil of WWII where often they had to hastily relocate, leaving many of her father’s treasures behind.   Her life’s journey eventually brought Waltraude, her husband, and four children to Saskatchewan.  Only a few of her father's puppets made the journey. Waltraude was groundbreaking in bringing the art form to life in Saskatchewan.  Her second passion was a skill she also learned from her father. The art of scissor cutting (Scherenschnitte). From 1995-2000 CICC TV Yorkton produced what would become a Canadian and US success story with children's programming. CICC still operates as a semi-satellite of CKCK Regina. "Poetree & Friends was an original children's television show about a 10 foot tall tree called "Poetree" who spoke in poem form. In this episode we focus on the Avonlea Heritage Museum in Avonlea, Saskatchewan. The former CNR station, built in 1912 now proudly displays artifacts that take visitors on a journey back in time. The Avonlea museum has taken advantage of funding available through the Canada Summer Jobs and Young Canada Works funding made available by the Canadian Government. This funding allows the museum to hire students to work at the museums full-time through this funding. This episode of SaskScapes features three of the students who have worked at the museum. Tanner, Jaida and Micah share their passion for the job, their love of the area, and some really entertaining stories about frightening mannequins and pump organs! General Manager, Cathy Geisler and Board member Darlene Watson are also featured in this episode and discuss the benefits of hiring students, the gratitude for the funding, and the passion and pride they take in their community and museum.
