Bryan Reffner, son of racing legend Tom Reffner, was born and raised in Rudolph, Wisconsin. Growing up around racing, he was first a gear head before he ever had interest in racing himself. Originally, he only started racing because his older brother, Baird Reffner bought a hobby stock. Having fun in a hobby stock turned into wanting to race a Super Late Model after a trip to Madison International Speedway (MIS) sparked a deeper desire to continue racing and one day make it to MIS. A few years into Super Late Model racing and after winning ARTGO ROY, Bryan's career looked to be nearing an end until he won the 1984 Oktoberfest at LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway. That win led to building a new Bac Kar Chassis in the offseason. The innovation of Bac Kar Chassis and the time spent working with Jim, Les, and the entire Back family played a large role in not only Bryan's Super Late Model success but carried that with him through ASA and the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. Beyond Super Late Models, Bryan captured the 1995 ASA Championship, 1996 Craftsman Truck Series ROY, and Truck Series Win at Texas Motor Speedway. After NASCAR, racing led him back to ASA and also a return to Super Late Model racing where he ended his storied career in another Bac Kar Chassis. Bryan and his father, Tom, built their own chassis from the ground up in 2012-2013, that his nephew Colin Reffner raced for over the next decade. Part 2 of 2 for Episode 015 with Mark Mackesy! Being brought to the race track at just 4 days old to his dad's race, was just the beginning of life at the races for Mark Mackesy. When a work injury put his dad's racing on hold, it gave Mark the opportunity to get behind the wheel of a Super Late Model. Eventually then splitting time with his dad in his car, he then stepped out into his own. Growing up racing around and spending time with his racing mentors like Tom Reffner, Jimmy Back, and Dick Trickle, gave him a front seat view of how those men raced and taught him how to race. Mark has accumulated many wins, a CWRA championship, and acquired the nickname of "The King of State Park Speedway". Through all of the wins and great times racing, "sometimes the spectacle was which bar are we going to after". Please support us by following the show and giving us a rating and/or a review! Gregg McKarns, along with his wife Angie are the owners of Wisconsin's Fastest 1/2 Mile race track, or as they call it, "The Family Farm". It is the place where they are working the land to make a living. Gregg, the son of legendary race promoter, John McKarns, was born into racing and took a love for it right from the beginning. As a young kid, even living a summer in a pop-up camper behind the race track didn't deter his passion. Being a race promoter and a race track owner isn't an easy path. Through a continuation of adapting new ideas and creativity, Gregg and his family have continued to provide venues for racers and fans to enjoy short track racing. With a standard of living by the golden rule, a trait past down from John McKarns, Gregg continues to teach and share that same principle to ensure racing is in good hands, for decades to come. Like many born into a racing family, Brandon Reichenberger wanted to be at the races as much as he could as early on as he can remember. He started racing at the age of 4 years old and when he wasn't racing, he was helping his dad at the track. At 8 years old, you could find Brandon spotting for his dad on top of their trailer. His racing career began in Go-Karts, then moved on to the DQ Dogs (4 Cylinders), and then eventually into a Super Late Model and a Midwest Truck. Brandon is currently behind the wheel of both a Super Late Model and a Midwest Truck. Much of his recent success has come in the Midwest Truck Series (MWTS) where he has racked up his share of wins and in 2024, a Midwest Truck Series Championship. His 2024 MWTS Championship didn't come without some adversity. But the adversity that he persevered through, came from challenges outside the racetrack when he and his wife navigated a complicated route with their son Chase's health. His son Chase shares the same love of racing as his dad, and it was that love that kept Brandon at the track even when Chase couldn't be. As Brandon and his wife focused on getting Chase's health improved and heading on the right track, Brandon still found himself holding the championship trophy at the end of the 2024 racing season. When someone talks about short track racing legends, one of the names that is sure to be mentioned, is Marv Marzofka. Born in the small town of Rudolph, WI. The same town as Dick Trickle and Tom Reffner. Wanting to get off of the family farm, Marv headed to the race track with a $50 race car. On his first trip to the races, he was sent home to add more bars to the rollcage. That first trip to the races was just the start of a 25 year racing career that encompassed many prestigious wins and 23 track championships, where 10 of them came from Dells Raceway Park. Nowadays, Marv enjoys his time on his farm land, with his family, and fishing. Not long after he heard his parents saying, " We need to get Kirby away from race cars", Kirby Kurth was outside shoveling dirt at his parent's new house, when he heard a sound coming through the woods. That sound was from the race cars of Tom Reffner and John Bovee. Kirby zig zagged through the woods and found himself at their race shop. That moment ignited a 49 year and still counting racing career. Now that his two sons are involved in racing too, there is no slow down insight for Kirby.
Chris Weinkauf, raised up dairy farming and taking family vacations to the Dixieland 250. When his grandma no longer needed her conversation van for flower shows that Chris would help her at, it quickly became a race hauler that pulled his shop class made race trailer. His racing career began in the bomber division at State Park Speedway. Winning a race in his first year set the foundation for moving up into the Late Model division years after. Becoming the 2010 State Park Speedway Super Late Model Champion, a three time Larry Detjens Memorial winner, 2009 Oktoberfest Trickle 99 winner, and winner of the 2014 ARCA Midwest Tour Wayne Carter Classic, are just some of the highlights of his Super Late Model racing career. Not only has he been accomplished and proud of his time spent racing, but also his family life, and professional life at his long time job. After an invitation in 1964 from Dick Trickle to visit Griffith Park Speedway, Pat Barrett caught the racing bug at 3 years old. His enjoyment for racing grew into attending races all over Wisconsin through his childhood years and eventually going to races with Dick Trickle as a crew member. Pat's time working at the racetrack began after taking a scoring job while in high school. The dedication and commitment to flagging began in 1992 after former Golden Sands Speedway owner Darrel Bassuener placed an ad in the paper looking for a flagman. Pat was the only one to apply and was given the job. The opportunity at Golden Sands Speedway began what is now 33 years of flagging races. Even after 33 years of enduring the summer heat and long race season, he's still loving it. At an early age, Pat showed a knack for playing cribbage which led to many tournament wins that includes winning the largest cribbage tournament in 2009 that takes place in Reno, NV. Outside of flagging and playing cribbage, he worked for the family auction business as an auctioneer. Pat talks about going to auctioneer school and even shows off his auctioneer chant. #speedandgrease #speedandgreasepodcast Where to find Speed and Grease! When his neighbor began taking him to State Park Speedway in a tow truck, it soon turned into pedaling his bike to the end of his favorite driver's driveway. That then led to becoming part of the team. At an early age of being taken under the wing of Mark Mackesy and his crew, Tom Ress developed of passion and desire for learning the technical aspects of what makes a race car capable of winning. After years of working with a veteran driver, Tom began working with talented up and comers, such as, Jerry Brickner, Natalie Decker, and Luke Fenhaus. When working with young talented drivers, Tom's success came from being more than just a crew chief, but the ability to be a mentor and a desire to help others succeed. #speedandgrease #speedandgreasepodcast Where to find Speed and Grease! Cody Knutson is a former factory Ski-Doo professional ice oval snowmobile racer. Born in Central Wisconsin and at a very early age found himself hanging onto the handlebars of a dirtbike. Dirt biking took a backseat to baseball as the years went by. Entering his senior year of high school, a nearly fatal car accident changed the course of his pursuit of baseball. After overcoming multiple surgeries and rehab, Cody found himself on the seat of a Merc 340 vintage ice oval snowmobile. The love of snowmobile racing and the desire to form his own race team, led him to being the 2016 V-Force Pro Light Champion and eventually a factory Ski-Doo Pro Champ 440 racer. From racing on ice to now racing to remove it from city roadway's, Cody now finds his passion being a streets department supervisor, a husband, and father. https://open.spotify.com/episode/04gNQQAYkSpTsOwBQ4gG4b?si=21lGA7fITJuJbt8ShlqkXA https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/speed-and-grease/id1788691149 Please support the podcast by giving us a rating and/or a review!
