In this episode I had an interesting discussion with a fellow ADE and coding colleague, Charlotte Billot. Charlotte teaches in primary school in Toulouse, France. Charlotte is an engineering school graduate in 1994 and considers herself a life-long learner. Charlotte believes that it is most important to create a warm and inviting atmosphere for her students so that they are happy learners because happy learners are better learners. For episode 20 I had a fun and fascinating discussion with my friend and ADE colleague, Larry Reiff. Larry is an English Language Arts & Computer Science teacher at Roslyn High School in Roslyn, NY. He was one of the first teachers in the country to pilot a full 1-to-1 iPad program with one of classes and now leads professional development classes on tech implementation in the classroom. In the summer of 2017, Larry became the coding instructor at NJY Camps in Milford, Pennsylvania. This school year Larry is teaching a mix of Freshman Humanities, App Development, and AP Computer Science Principles. As an Apple Distinguished Educator and a Google Certified Teacher, Larry Reiff understands that 21st century students absorb and integrate information very differently than any previous generation. In this episode we conclude the two-part discussion I had with Dr. Nicholas Outram. In this episode we discuss embedded systems, third-party hardware tools used to teach Swift, and possible outcomes for post-secondary educators having students who already know some computer science basics. Dr. Outram obtained a first-class (hons) degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering in 2002, then later a Ph.D. in Biomedical Signal Processing from the University of Plymouth, UK in 1997. He worked as a Development Engineer first with Wandle and Goltermann, focusing on real-time DSP software and hardware, then as a Systems Engineer with Neoventa Medical AB, focusing on development of fixed-point DSP for real-time signal processing of Ultrasound and Fetal ECG. Worked on design and validation of real-time signal processing algorithms, and later refocused back onto research into methods for quantification of fetal heart rate reactivity. He is now an Associate Professor in Computing and Electronics, at the University of Plymouth, specializing in iOS Development, embedded systems and digital systems design. I would like to share the interesting discussion I had with Carlos Garcia. Carlos lives in Valencia, Spain and has an Audiovisual Communication degree for Universidad de Valencia and a Master’s in Secondary Education. Carlos worked for ten years as a scriptwriter for television series of comedy, drama, and entertainment programms. After working those ten years in TV, Carlos changed careers and moved into the exciting world of teaching. I am pleased to share the great and varied conversation I had with Chris Barnabei. Chris is a librarian and technology integration specialist for a STEM high school in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. He supervises the school's 1:1 iPad program, library/makerspace, and professional development initiatives. In addition, Chris teaches classes in Swift programming, iOS app development, and video production. Coding has been a recent interest of his, and along with a team of students published an app to the App Store for his school in June 2016. Chris attended WWDC16 on an educator scholarship, and presented a TEDx talk advocating for coding in K-12 schools. He started his teaching career as an elementary librarian in 2007. Since then, instructional technology has been a passion of his, and he has championed its use as vehicle for student engagement, achievement, and positive school reform. I am happy to share my conversation with Mike Yakubovsky. Mike is the STEM Coordinator and lead engineering teacher at Coppell High School, a 1:1 iPad Apple Distinguished School. He has been with CISD since 2003 and started the CHS School of Engineering in 2006. The School of Engineering is a 4-year pre-college engineering program focusing on design in which learners work on projects that prepare them for college STEM disciplines. Activities expose learners to design, applications of math and science, electronics, kinematics, and coding. Learners have begun Swift Playgrounds and Swift as a core component of their coding instruction. In addition to teaching, Mike is the department Instructional Coach. Mike was honored as an Apple Distinguished Educator in the spring of 2017. In 2015, the Metroplex Technology Business Council named Mike the Tech Titan of the Future for High Schools. Prior to that, Mike was presented with the Excellence in Engineering Education award from National Instruments and was named a runner up for the Discover Educator Award. Mike is the advisor for several organizations related to the Engineering program: Society of Women Engineers, Society of Minority Engineers, and the Coppell Solar Racing Team. 5: 'Your job is to be an expert learner.' with Stacy Sniegowski In this episode I had a great Swift education conversation with Stacy Sniegowski. After graduating from Purdue University in 2005, with a BS in Mathematics Education and minor in French, Stacy began her career in the Chicago Public School system. Over the next ten years, she worked in the district as a teacher and instructional coach to design learning experiences for K- 12 students and teachers in math, science, engineering, technology and foreign languages. Her training with the New Teacher Center, developed her skills in adult learning, instructional coaching strategies, and mentoring techniques. For the last two years, Stacy has worked with MobileMakersEdu to support high school teachers to bring mobile app development into their schools and iOS developers to develop their skill sets in instruction. She enjoys working with both educators and software developers from across the US and the globe. To this date, Stacy’s work has advanced the learning of more than 200 teachers and almost 14,000 students. In her spare time, Stacy works with her husband to run their “creativty clubhouse” business, WholesomeZine, a place for artists to gain 21st century skills to promote their craft. She manages the operations, training, internships and social media for the company, in addition to being a DJ on WholesomeRadio.
