Today on the podcast we chat with the amazing Dr Emma Beckett. This chat blew me away. The knowledge and how Dr Emma imparts it for families is remarkable! The first 1000 days on an infants life, from conception - a child’s second birthday are a time of rapid growth, especially for the gut and immune system. It also lays the building blocks for lifelong health. Dr Emma and I chat about this. We discuss the gold standard of breast feeding, however, for some families that isn’t possible, so we discuss how Mums and Dads can help supplement an infants diet through microbiome and immune development through other means. Infections are one of the most common reason infants are brought in to a health care setting. Supporting gut and immune health through nutrition can help reduce this concern and build long term resilience in little ones. Nurses play a hugely important role in this area. Through guidance and support, we can assist families to navigate feeding issues and concerns. Understanding the science around well-researched formula ingredients, such as prebiotics, helps reassure families that they are caring for their infants in a safe way when it comes to deciding on ways to feed their infants. The prebiotics you need to look for in are formula are the following: Galacto-oligosaccharides Fructo-oligosaccharides Also printed as scGOS/lcFOS These are the most researched prebiotic blend globally. www.tendernessfornurses.com.au www.nutricia.com.au Dr Emma Beckett - Food & Nutrition Scientist Stay Ahead with the Latest in Infant Immunity The first 1,000 days—from conception to age two—are vital for building a strong immune system. Emerging research highlights the key role of prebiotics in supporting gut health and reducing infection risk during this time. Today on the podcast we chat with Nursing Professor, Elizabeth Denny-Wilson. Elizabeth specialises in obesity prevention research with special focus on infant feeding and primary health care. Elizabeth is on the WHO committee writing the guidelines around infant obesity prevention. She has a position on the National health and research council and is a member of their obesity committee. Elizabeth is also a board member of The Sydney Children’s Hospital Network. Elizabeth is a remarkable woman and nurse whose empathy and compassion for new mothers and their babies is clearly evident throughout our chat together. Through all the research she has done and contributed to, she has found a large gap around mixed feeding for mothers. We all know breast milk for babies is the gold standard, but what if you can’t breast feed, have to return to work, have poor milk supply or baby refusal of breast? What happens then? We discuss this and more! We talk about mixed feeding where breast and formula milk are both used and just how little information there is around this. Elizabeth discusses the need for us to be supportive of new mums as this can be a very stressful time, especially when there is advice and suggestions coming from loved ones, well meaning friends and even strangers feel they can add their opinions unsolicited. I felt so privileged to chat with such a remarkable nurse. I hope you enjoy this conversation with Elizabeth. Today we chat with the remarkable Donation Specialist Nurse Georgie Callaghan. I had a wonderful chat with Georgie about her background as an intensive care nurse and how her experience in this specialty has allowed her to work within organ donation. We discuss her role in assisting families in making the often heart-rending decision to donate a loved one’s organs due to many differing circumstances. We also chat about how donating can help so many people through life-threatening medical conditions. Georgie and I talk about how this role can take a toll both mentally and physically on nurses within this specialty of organ donation and the importance of self-care and tenderness to self as a nurse in her position. This is a beautiful chat about the gift of life families can give others when they themselves are going through heartbreaking situations. Today we continue our discussion around gambling harm here is Australia. Both Zen and Kate chat about their knowledge and personal experience around gambling harm and the impact it is having on Australians. Gambling harm is continually brushed under the carpet as an addiction. It’s easy money for the government and I can only assume that’s why it isn’t addressed more urgently, however, the impact it is having on families and communities cannot be diminished.
