The conversation explores the connection between visual development and motor skills, emphasizing the importance of movement in early childhood. The speaker suggests alternative therapies and exercises to help improve the child's vision and overall development, while also addressing the potential downsides of strong prescriptions. The discussion concludes with recommendations for exercises and a plan for reducing the child's prescription glasses. Takeaways The child has a high prescription of plus seven for farsightedness. Farsightedness can be linked to developmental delays in motor skills. Movement is crucial for visual and motor development in children. Strong prescriptions can interfere with a child's visual development. Alternative therapies and exercises can help improve vision and motor skills. The connection between the eyes, brain, and body is significant. Primitive reflexes play a role in visual and motor development. Regular eye exercises can aid in reducing prescription strength. Children may experience reversals in letters as a normal part of development. Holistic approaches to eye care consider the whole child, not just their eyesight.   Sound bites "That's a really high prescription." "I want to give you some exercises." The dialogue explores how adjustments in lenses can influence not only visual clarity but also personal relationships and intuitive insights in professional practice. Takeaways I started wearing glasses when I was in fifth grade. I learned about good visual habits in optometry school. I'm feeling like I'm getting early presbyopic symptoms. Definitely more clarity with the new prescription. I would cut that by half and try. It feels shaky almost like my ground is so shaky. I feel like I identify more with my type A side. This is more of my relaxed side of it. You might get more intuitive insights with different lenses. I love the way I was trained in optometry. Sound bites "Definitely more clarity." "I would cut that by half and try." "I love the way I was trained." Chapters 00:00 Vision and Personal History 02:48 Exploring Visual Habits and Therapy 04:50 Understanding Prescription Adjustments 07:05 The Impact of Lenses on Perception and Relationships   Sam Berne (00:00.463) And Justine, you're the last one. tell me a little bit about your vision and how you became Nearsighted and what's your history? Yeah, so I started wearing glasses when I was in fifth grade and my optometrist prescribed me very strong minus lenses. and didn't tell me anything about visual habits. So I used to color and write really close to the page and I used to watch TV, you know, from the distance of this computer screen. And so my prescription just continued to climb and climb and climb throughout school. And it wasn't until optometry school that I learned about good visual habits, about, you know, relaxing your vision, going outside. you know, not being so glued to the screens, but you know, with COVID and technology nowadays, we're always on our screens. And so I do vision therapy with patients. And so I'm actively doing the exercises with them, especially the diverging activities. And what I'm finding is I'm approaching 36 now, and I'm feeling like I'm getting early presbyopic kind of symptoms where long-term near work, it's starting to give me strain and headaches and I even put a little bit of basin prism in my glasses just to help with that. But I'm still finding that my eyes get really tired by the end of the day. Okay, well one thing I can say right off the bat that could really help you is have you ever thought about one of these prescriptions? Yes, and that is what I I would love to strive to do that. So the way we should do this is if you've got some flippers and you can get them, then what will happen is I'm going to have you wear them over this. Yeah. Sam Berne (02:08.429) Okay, I've got it. I've done so this is a plus 50 I just want you to wear it over.

Sam Berne (00:01.454) Hey everyone, welcome to my walk today. So we're going to post this on my podcast. This is a question I got from a mom recently. She has a 15 year old son who's been diagnosed with astigmatism and he was getting some occupational therapy and the therapist noticed that he had a body twist and when he had his lenses off there was less twist in the body. So she's asking What should they do in terms of a lens prescription? And how do we work with this situation? Well, astigmatism can be either in the cornea. It's an irregular shape of the front of the eye or it can also be muscular where the six extraocular muscles are changing the shape of the eye and it creates kind of an asymmetry or a warping in the eye. Now in my own body work that I've developed I have found that I measure somebody's astigmatism at the beginning of my exam and then I do my body work to unwind the the body's twist my functional vision integrative body method and then I measure the astigmatism after the body work and in a high percentage of cases.

You don't need, you know, the the high-end things. I wouldn't recommend that. But by starting a podcast, there's so many different ways that you can go. You could have say in Santa Fe, your business was restaurants rest your restaurant owner. What you could do is you could actually invite other people in the industry to come on your show and that would help you cross-pollinate. They get to know about you. You'd get to know about them again. It's part of that giving where you're not asking the guests for anything, but you let them talk about themselves and so they have their audience. have your audience and this is how you start building the podcast and at this point I've got a very large download monthly download. You can get analytics from it and a very high retention rate where people want to listen to the entire podcast. So I've had some interest interesting guests on I've done a lot of Q &A podcasts and then you can also look to be on other people's podcasts as well. So there's a lot of different advantages to being to having a podcast because it's that audio channel and it's another funnel for you to start to get followers. One of the things I do with my podcasts is I sometimes they're very short. They're five minutes or they're three minutes and I say, hey everybody is doctor Sam and I clarity podcast. And you know, I have this great idea blah blah blah, and I'll talk about it for a few minutes. Well, that's our show for today. Thanks for tuning in until next time.

You know, I grew up in a middle-class family and we emphasized education. So I ended up becoming a doctor. I was always interested in natural healing. So I combined the two and I started two private practices. One I sold the other I still have. So I've always had an entrepreneurial spirit in me. And in 2016, I started my brand on the internet and I'll talk about that and actually in 2020 is when I launched my e-commerce right around covid. So I'll go into more details about that and I've been a client of score for the past three years. So here we go. So when I started I began to think of myself as a media channel and the key thing in if you're going to do social media in my opinion is to create value for your audience. And what I did early on is I gave away my best information like everything for free and it's kind of like this idea of give give give and then you can ask. Okay. This is a really important aspect in building a brand and it's very different than say being transactional and I'll kind of go into more detail on that in a minute. But if you are going to do social media, my advice would be start with your strengths. Are you better at writing? Are you better at talking for me? I loved videos. So I loved doing video. also love doing audio and I actually started this this process called morning walks with Dr. Sam and so I would I love to hike so I be hiking in the National Forest and somebody would ask me a question and so I would stop and go. All right. Let me give you the answer here and it became a huge way to build my following.

There is a Renaissance in whole body therapy. Vision reflects systemic and metabolic health. Children's vision development is crucial for learning. Patients want equal partnership in health decisions. Holistic methods can support eye health. The current medical model is symptom-focused. Empowerment is key in holistic medical care. Community involvement is essential for change. Integrating ancient principles with modern practices is vital.   Chapters 00:00 The State of Holistic Health in 2025 02:48 Integrating Vision into Holistic Health 06:09 The Role of Vision in Child Development 09:06 Empowerment in Holistic Medical Care 12:01 Rethinking Eye Care Practices 14:52 Hope for the Future of Holistic Health   Sam Berne (00:00) to welcome you to my latest podcast. Today is a very interesting show. What I've done is I've pulled my functional vision integrative method practitioners. So these are doctors who wanted to ask me some questions and the theme is about what is the state of the Union of holistic health globally in 2025? So I'm going to take their questions one at a time and I hope you enjoy the show. Thanks for tuning in. The first question is from a naturopath who practices in Denmark and he's asking what is the state of holistic medicine and vision not only in the US but globally and the way I see it in 2025. We're in a really big power shift right now. People are tired of band-aid solutions. You know, a day doesn't go by when I get an email from somebody that says, you know, I'm really tired of symptom management care. People want to know what is the root cause of their condition and what can they do to heal their condition naturally? I would say the biggest aspect is people want to take responsibility for their health. know in the US we do call it health insurance, but I think we should call it disease insurance because all it's good for is things like if we have to go to the emergency room, if we, you know, get into a car accident, if there's some big traumatic event in our body, medical care works really well. But in terms of being proactive, it just isn't there. And in fact, so many people will share with me how invalidated they feel when they even bring up things like nutrition, supplements, herbs, essential oils. It's getting really tough out there for people to find a like-minded holistic doctor if they are themselves holistically minded. Question 2 is from a craniosacral therapist who lives in California and she's asking how do I fit into this holistic model of health not only in the US but globally? Well, I think there's a Renaissance and people looking for whole body therapy. I mean, if you look at just the holistic health industry, one of the things that I've observed Is that when practitioners now want to teach internationally, they really can't do it unless they either get a work permit or they have the country that is hosting them do some legal things to be able to invite them so that the government's now are on to holistic health and people who want to teach it internationally. And if you want to do that, You have to jump through a lot of hoops. remember 25, 30 years ago when I used to teach internationally.

And there's an author who was actually on his podcast a couple years ago. It's called that podcast is called the energy blueprint and the the practitioners name is Ari. ARI Witten w h i t t e n Ari somebody you've heard Sam Berne (00:28.158) And Ari, if you go on Amazon, he wrote a really nice book on red light therapy, not on the eyes, but just in general. And I think that if you're skeptical about it or you want to learn more about it, I would do some Google search. would, you know, I might I've done a couple of podcasts on it and you know, there are a couple of people out there that Sam Berne (00:56.983) They devote their whole podcasts to red light and research. Now with the eyes, there isn't much out there on red light because the machines, the devices that they sell are too bright for the eyes. So this is an important point. Sam Berne (01:18.899) One of the trauma effects that we go into is if we're light sensitive and in our light sensitivity, we shut down. We have a very strong blink reflex and so you're triggering trauma in the eyes trying to look at a bright light box. You can't do it. In fact, the manufacturers will say don't look at the light. So when they calculate a near sighted prescription of 20 feet that prescription is too strong for you for 20 inches. And in fact, if you try to use your distance glasses for the computer, it's going to make your eyes worse at distance and to two different one for distance and one for computer and then just don't use anything for reading. and get rid of the progressive lenses. That's only inducing more myopia because it's tunneling you. You'll find that you'll get like a distance prescription and you're driving. You have the whole window now that you're using right now. You're only using the top fourth of the lens for driving. So your peripheral is very disabled in some ways. all in the spirit of convenience, you know, but it's making your eyes worse in doing that. Can prism lenses be the same as your your sighted lenses that are maybe folded into one? yeah, of course. Yeah. And so, you know, for some of you that had a really positive experience for the prism, we might incorporate it. For others, we might just do it for home, like a home exercise. So it just depends. know, sometimes you incorporate the prism into the prescription glasses. You can do that or you just get the prism and you work with it as an exercise. When I work with the kids at Kid Power, it's a really good question. Do I want to put the prisms in their prescription or I want to just have them work with the physical therapist and that's that's kind of a question that we ask a lot if they're really embedded and I see a huge improvement with the prism like their posture and their movement and their affect then I'll put it in their prescription glasses and the school will say what's going on here this this child is completely different Sam Berne (02:17.324) because they're now connecting their vision to their brain and body where they weren't before. And when you go for the exam and they put the drops in your eyes, what they're doing is they're paralyzing the muscles we were just working with. So then they prescribe based on the muscles being paralyzed.
