TCAS makes aviation safer by alerting the flight crew of conflicting traffic by issuing a TA and possibly an RA. Find out what TCAS, TA, and what RA are in this episode. We briefly talk about the unfortunate accident in Naples, Florida involving a Challenger 604. Differences in types of starters installed on turbine engines and why a restart would not have been possible in this situation, based on what is known at this time. This episode's pilot tip is presented by John, a Corporate Pilot on a Cessna Citation X. He has AMAZING editing skills that can be found on his aviation YouTube channel here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQuG0THuPNGx938e2cWAnVA This link will take you to our Discord server: https://discord.gg/N7EqFHQg6u Tim's non-aviation YouTube channel mentioned in the intro: Macro Soaring https://www.youtube.com/@MacroSoaring/featured Rob's YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@foxtrotalphaaviation Tim's Aviation YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@thecorporatepilotdad You may e-mail us at: thecorporatepilotguyspodcast@gmail.com Music is from Audionautix http://www.audionautix.com --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/the-corporate-pilot-guys-podcast/support
Older episodes of the podcast have been getting audio updates thanks to A.I. enhanced audio. This episode has been enhanced by A.I. so let us know if you notice a difference. Rob recently returned home from recurrent training. Training has been spoken about in brief in previous episodes, but this time, we take a deeper dive into recurrent training and the day-to-day training schedule covering ground school and simulator training. Day one of simulator training covers many of the same maneuvers a student pilot would perform on a checkride. Some corporate pilots have checkrides on the last day of training, and other corporate operators do a progressive checkride. Both types of checks are a topic of conversation. PUSH ROLL POWER STABILIZE! What do these 4 words mean? What if the airplane is upset from wake turbulence and put into an unusual attitude? These four words have a significant meaning in UPRT or upset recovery training. Are you buying a plane? Aircraft Broker extraordinaire, Ryan McGill of McGill Aviation gives another airplane buying tip to help you make smart decisions when buying a plane. Ryan can be found at: McGill Aviation (@mcgillaviation) | TikTok TRAFFIC TRAFFIC - TCAS Alerts and more failures in the simulator. Just a few of the many tasks a corporate pilot has to practice and react to at recurrent training. Checkrides make most pilots nervous. Rob talks about his thoughts and feelings on taking a checkride. Tim gives a tip for making sweet tea. Rob talks about free ice cream and so much more. *If you are a real-world pilot or Air Traffic Controller and would like to give a pilot tip that may be aired on the podcast, please record a tip and send it to us. In this episode, there will be an airplane buying tip as well as a tip from an Air Traffic Controller who is new to the podcast. Inside the podcast, Rob and Tim will talk about circling approaches in private jets and some considerations that need to be taken when doing such procedures. Rob will give a tip on copying IFR clearances and Tim will talk about two videos he has made on the subject of copying every type of IFR clearance as well as instrument approach clearances. Those are the two main topics, but there is a lot more valuable information given in this episode. In this episode Rob and Tim discuss the difference between PNR and ANR headsets. Different models of headsets are discussed as well as headsets Tim and Rob have used and currently use while flying in the private jets they operate. A case study of an aircraft incident involving a crew that took off without a clearance is covered with tips and advice to NOT get into a situation like the one described. After listening to the incident, what would you do? The dreaded holding pattern is also talked about along with how we do holds, pilot workload, and what other decisions might have to be made while holding, or what can be done besides holding. As always, there is an ATC tip from a retired Air Traffic Controller dealing with IFR operations and an airplane buying tip from Ryan McGill of McGill Aviation. Alternate Airports are required in Canada but not always in the United States when flying under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR). When are alternate airports needed in the United States, but also, is the closest legal alternate the right airport for you or for your passengers? We discuss a few different scenarios we have experienced in our flying careers. Density altitude effects all aircraft but how do we deal with density altituide in private jets? Paper charts are available to compute performance in private jets, but we will explain a much easier method we use in our day-to-day operation flying corporate aircraft. An airplane buying tip by McGill Aviation and an ATC tip on VFR flight advisories from an Air Traffic Controller will also be heard in this episode. Last of all, a few bloopers from this episode that were cut during editing and unnecessary bleeps were added. No foul language was used in the recording of this podcast! If you are buying a plane, this episode goes into depth on what an aircraft broker is and what they will do for a perspective airplane buyer. Learn about what it takes to become an aircraft broker and what an aircraft broker does to help the buyer of an aircraft. What is a pre-buy and should you have one accomplished before purchase? Will you recognize red flags in the buying process? A broker can help identify red flags and save the buyer time and money by knowing the ins and outs of the buying process. A broker can help the owner not make decisions based on the emotion and excitement of buying an airplane. An aircraft broker, like a real-estate agent, charges a fee/commission based on the price of the airplane for their services. Brokers can help save money, but they can also reduce the level of stress in the airplane acquisition process. Find out more about hiring a broker and why a broker should be used and if hiring a broker is right for you. Or just take a listen to three people talk about airplanes who love aviation. Welcome to The Corporate Pilot Guys Podcast, during this episode Rob and Tim interview TikTok's Skylady Lindsey, an Air Traffic Controller at a busy Class Bravo airport and a Private Pilot with an instrument and seaplane rating. This interview with Lindsey will entail how to become an Air Traffic Controller, what the FAA's Air Traffic Controller Academy is like, the hiring process, transferring from one facility to another, on the job training, and so much more. Are you a new pilot? Afraid to talk to ATC? Do you avoid controlled airspace to bypass talking to ATC? Lindsey gives some of her tips for talking to ATC from her experience as a pilot and an Air Traffic Controller. How should a dispute with ATC be handled? In the air or on the ground, both, neither? We will discuss how to deal with a dispute between a pilot and a controller. Capabilities of Controller Pilot Data Link Communications, better known as CPDLC, is a newer form of communication that has taken the place of some voice communications over the radio. Learn about CPDLC and what it can do from the pilot's perspective as well as the Air Traffic Controller's perspective. In this installment of The Corporate Pilot Guy's Podcast, I delve into another segment of aviation that increases safety through prevention by talking to a pilot who was pulled over and arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. The guest for this episode is Mac and he shares his experience getting a DUI, possible jail time, court, impact on his family, and losing his FAA medical. Mac was in the process of becoming a professional pilot and had completed up to his commercial pilot's certificate. When he had the DUI, his dreams of becoming a professional pilot were put on hold indefinitely, and possibly forever. The process to get an FAA medical after having a DUI arrest is difficult beyond having a medical exam by a HIMS Aviation Medical Examiner. Mac details the process of getting his medical back, cost involved in getting a DUI, and how the DUI changed his life. This episode is meant to share one person's experience from making a bad decision involving alcohol and driving. Second, to aid in the prevention of making the decision to drive while drunk. Thank you to Mac for sharing his story to help others. Rob and Tim discuss how aircraft pressurization works in corporate jets and in airliners. Pressurized aircraft make flight at high altitudes possible and usually flawless. However, things can occasionally can go wrong with aircraft pressurization, we will discuss the backup systems available to pilots, crew and passengers, when things doesn't work as planned. We will also discuss crew and passenger oxygen systems. As always, if you have any questions about this or any topic we discuss, please reach out to us, we will do our best to get back to you in a timely manner (please see contact methods below). There are major differences between flying in the United States versus Canada. From filing flight plans, search and rescue, airspace, airspeed, and communications, Rob and Tim highlight some of the major differences between flying in the two countries. When flying to any foreign country, flight planning needs to be started early along with familiarization of regulations in those countries. We discuss the Wright Brothers to celebrate the 120th anniversary of their first flight on December 17, 1903. How did the Wright Flyer's wing get its inspiration? Did the Wright Flyer use a catapult on the first flight? Were both Wright Brothers born in Dayton, Ohio? Is there video of the Wright Brothers' first flight? Learn the answers to these questions and more such as why one wing was longer on the original Wright Flyer than the other, in this aviation podcast. The Wright brothers changed the world but also with collaboration with Glenn Curtiss, the Curtiss-Wright Corporation was formed and a spin-off of an employee from that company formed another very well-known, major aviation company that is still going strong today. A listener question from our Discord server asks the difference between training at a part 61 vs part 141 program. That question is answered and so much more. Winter flying has its dangers but can be made safer due to aircraft systems and different types of de-ice fluids that can be applied to aircraft. Join Tim and Rob as they share some of their icing experiences with their combined flight time exceeding 13,000 hours. Aircraft can be sprayed with four different types of fluid to remove and prevent ice build-up, but jet aircraft are also equipped with many different systems to combat the effects of icing.
