After joining the Royal Marines at sixteen, Ben was deployed to Afghanistan, where he was severely injured in an explosion, losing his right leg and left arm. Despite the catastrophic injuries, Ben's mental strength and determination saw him push through his recovery. He quickly adapted to life with prosthetics and went on to run the London Marathon for Help For Heroes. At just 18, John served in the Royal Navy and faced harrowing challenges during the Battle of Anzio on 23rd January 1944, when HMS Janus was sunk by a flying torpedo. Of the crew, 160 lives were lost, and only 80 survived. John is now the sole surviving member of that brave ship's company.
