What should you do if chiropractic adjustments aren't helping your client? In this episode, I speak with my podcast producer, Tony, about using applied neurology to support chiropractic care. I discuss what is happening with chiropractic adjustments from a neurological lens, the state and diversity of the chiropractic industry, common misunderstandings about chiropractic adjustments, some of the tech-based approaches that have been embraced by chiropractors, and more. I outline the importance of assessments to any practice and describe some gait, cerebellar, and range-of-motion assessments that can be done quickly in a chiropractic session to help inform adjustments and exercise prescriptions. I talk about the active vs passive gap and some strategies to add more active interventions to your practice. I also give some advice on how to structure your practice in a way that supports more personalized care for your clients and what to do if your interventions aren't yielding positive results. This episode is meant to be a companion to any chiropractor or manual therapist that is looking to incorporate applied neurology in their practice, and has plenty of great actionable advice that applies outside of chiropractic as well. Did your child skip some developmental milestones or seem a little behind in hitting them? Do they struggle with things like catching or throwing a ball, playing sports, or even making friends? Or maybe you were that kid once upon a time? In today’s episode, I’m chatting with pediatric occupational therapy assistant Rachel Harrington all about primitive reflexes—what they are, how and when they develop, and how they impact both kids and adults in daily life. We dive into how these reflexes get kick-started during the birthing process, how many are guided by the visual system, and why it’s so important to integrate them as children grow. We also talk about how primitive reflexes can actually come back after trauma or as part of the aging process, acting as a protective mechanism. Rachel breaks down the signs of poor reflex integration—things like ongoing anxiety, vestibular dysfunction, feeling ungrounded, poor left/right coordination, ADHD, bedwetting, IBS, trouble sitting still, speech or articulation challenges, and more. We nerd out a bit on the neuroanatomy behind primitive reflexes and get into practical tools like breathing exercises, motor control drills, and vestibular activities. We even chat about how these concepts overlap with applied neuro training. Plus, Rachel shares activity ideas for kids who struggle with emotional regulation and explains how to choose drills based on whether a child is over- or under-responsive. Huge thanks to Rachel for sharing her deep knowledge of pediatric occupational therapy and for creating such incredible resources for both parents and practitioners. What if most people are fundamentally misunderstanding how pain works? In this episode, I speak with my podcast producer, Tony, about how I think about pain through an applied neurology lens. I discuss the psychology of pain, how we usually associate pain with injury, how pain is a construct of the brain related to threat, and why understanding the true nature of pain can be the single most powerful revelation for many of my clients. I also discuss how I approach acute pain related to injury vs chronic pain, why movement tends to be so helpful for pain, the threat bucket, the concept of nociception, muscle pain vs joint pain, referral-based visceral pain, what's actually causing headaches, pain disorders and more. I also discuss some of my favorite interventions for dealing with pain ranging from techniques such as blood-flow restriction and breathing exercises to trigeminal nerve activation and lymphatic drainage techniques. This episode is a great review of many essential applied neurology concepts around pain and includes some of my go-to tools and insights for dealing with pain when nothing else seems to be working. What if listening to music in just one ear could make your pain go away? In this episode, I speak with my podcast producer, Tony, about how we process sound and why it can be an incredible tool for improving balance, posture and muscle tone as well as decreasing pain. I discuss how audio is processed in the brain, what pathways it follows, what related systems it is connected to in a neurological context, and how a hearing deficiency can have some wide ranging and surprising effects on the body and performance. I lay out a simple assessment process for evaluating your hearing, as well as how to use specific sound stimulation techniques to target deficiencies in hearing or to support other systems such as the trigeminal nerve and the vestibular or sympathetic systems. I also discuss phenomena like tinnitus, whether different frequencies in the audio spectrum have different effects, why hearing deficiencies that have neurological effects may not be considered diagnosable by an audiologist, how your brain can compensate for deficiencies in hearing, tone generators, tuning forks, bone-conduction headphones, stacking, and more. What if a simple drill could dramatically reduce your pain and improve your performance, but you just don't know what it is yet? In this episode, I speak with my podcast producer, Tony, about how to find your high payoff exercises and drills. I walk you through a step by step process to establish a baseline for assessment, choose what movements to assess, and then experiment with and evaluate different drills and their impact in real-time to find what actually works for you. I discuss what to do if your results aren't consistent, the psychological aspects of dealing with pain, the importance of monitoring dosage, how long you should stick to a drill to see if it's working, why strength training can be such a powerful tool in and of itself, and more. I also give plenty of examples of specific drills worth trying and assessing as you find your own high payoff drills for pain, mobility, and movement. What if kegels aren't working for you? In this episode, I speak with my podcast producer, Tony, all about the pelvic floor. I discuss the anatomy around the pelvic floor, common problems you might not realize are related to poor pelvic floor function, an old injury I had that caused asymmetries and tonal issues with my pelvic floor, why I think most pelvic floor rehabilitation like kegels aren't that successful, and why focusing on the reflexive control of the pelvic floor may be the more fruitful path. I discuss drills and exercises that can improve pelvic floor function that go beyond just voluntary contraction work, such as spinal mobility work, breathing drills and techniques, bilateral complex movements, vibration, vestibular drills, tongue drills, stacking, and more. This is a fantastic topic for applied neurology due to the reflexive nature of pelvic floor control and the often indirect paths you need to take to affect its function for the better. What if elevating sympathetics could actually help with pain and stress? In this episode, I speak with my podcast producer, Tony, all about the much-maligned sympathetic system. I discuss the neurology and anatomy of the sympathetic system and explain how it works in tandem with other systems to achieve the correct balance needed for movement, strength-training, and more. I outline cases where this balance isn't being met, and how raising sympathetics, even when it may seem counter-intuitive, might be the solution to problems with pain, decreased mobility, and anxiety. I go over signs that the sympathetic system might be under-performing, and give you drills and assessments to activate the sympathetic system in a targeted way to improve outcomes without raising threat and causing more issues. I also discuss the idea of intentionally raising sympathetics to actually provoke a parasympathetic response later. This episode includes discussion of vision drills, breathing techniques, using light and sound, circadian rhythms, cold temperature, acupuncture tools, vigorous workouts, stretching and more. What if training "fast" isn't actually the best way to improve reaction time for athletes? In this episode, I speak with my podcast producer, Tony, all about improving reaction speed to improve athletic performance. I discuss the neurology of reaction speed and how decisions are often made after first taking in visual information and understanding it. This is why improving the speed of visual recognition is actually the game-changer many coaches and athletes are missing from their training. I outline 4 main categories of vision, how to assess and train each of them, and how to make our training specific for each athlete based on their own neurology. I also talk about depth perception, peripheral vision, contrast sensitivity, sympathetic tone, stacking cognitive skills, perturbation, and more. This is one of our longer episodes filled with actionable assessments, drills, and gems that you can put into your practice immediately to train your reaction speed and improve your athletic performance. If you had a sense that could tell you how your body was functioning, would you use it? In this episode, I speak with my podcast producer, Tony, all about interoception and the important role it plays in the nervous system. I begin with a story about a client that was essentially blind to the internal functions and sensations of her own body and the challenges she faced in both training and day-to-day life. I go on to define interoception, the relevant anatomy of the brain and body, its connection to both emotion and physical sensation, and more. I discuss the importance of autonomic function to healthy movement and performance, drills you can use to upregulate and downregulate interoception, and how to assess those drills to make sure you are moving in the right direction for your specific goals. I also discuss various techniques and modalities, like breathing, tongue exercises, meditation, insular belts, and more. Throughout the episode, I tie these concepts and drills back to my client, so I can provide context and show how these concepts are applied in the real world, and to underscore just how life-changing improving someone's sense of interoception can be. What do applied neurology professionals do when they injure their back? In this episode, I speak with my podcast producer, Tony, about Alisha's recent back injury and the tools we used immediately to start to fix her pain and get her back to training. I talk about how she got injured while we were moving, and then go step by step and detail what we did on day one and then throughout the first week to help get her back on track. I discuss how we used the assessment process, combined with some clues from her training history, to find her high-payoff drills, and how we stacked them and drilled them repeatedly until we were able to majorly improve her mobility, relieve her pain, and get her back to her normal self. I also discuss some of the dead-ends we embarked upon that sounded good in theory, but didn't pass the assessment process. This is a case-study in applied neurology, and covers a plethora of concepts, including threat assessment, stacking, closed chain vs open-chain positions, the table dilemma, inhibition tools, isometrics, audio stimulation, tractioning and more. I also talk about my balance-board, and whether or not I consider it valuable as a tool for vestibular training. What if you could decrease your pain by covering one eye? In this episode, I speak with my podcast producer, Tony, about inhibition tools and how removing stimulus can actually be the key to success when it comes to decreasing pain and improving movement. I talk about overactivity in different systems of the brain, and why sometimes staying in that elevated state of activity can lead to pain, anxiety, lack of focus, training imbalances, and more. By inhibiting some parts of the nervous system, we can focus our training away from areas that are increasing threat, or are simply doing too much of the work so that we can target a weaker system that isn't properly doing it's job. I relay the stories of several clients that benefited from inhibition tools, and give concrete examples of tools that you can easily purchase or make at home. This is a powerful concept that can be useful for those who keep trying to "train" their problems without success, or have "tried everything" and nothing works. What if you could fix your tight hamstrings by gargling water? In this episode, I speak with my podcast producer, Tony, about how we can better understand movement by learning about the structures of the brain. I go over the main areas of the brain associated with movement, and discuss their location, their function, how to assess them, and how to train them. This episode ties together a bunch of concepts previously discussed on the podcast, like threat, the opposing joint theory, posture and gait assessment, and more, but with a focus on the brain areas that drive many of the inputs and outputs for the rest of the body. We also have a free-ranging discussion around our recent experiences with applied neurology in our own training, and discuss the real-world impacts that gargling, humming, pencil pushups, finger tapping, and vestibular drills are having on our lives today. What if you could design your training program based on how you walk? In this episode, I speak with my podcast producer, Tony, about gait assessment, and how the way you walk can reveal the health of your brain and give you clues about how to improve your movement and decrease pain. I discuss the difference between running gait and walking gait, the biomechanical rabbit hole, and why gait assessment is one of my most important assessment tools. I break down four common patterns to look for when assessing gait and give details on how to recognize them, what they mean for the brain and higher order systems, and starting points for training based on each pattern. I also talk about my earliest experiences with gait assessment, why people on Instagram think I'm crazy, and why my current training program revolves around improving my own walking gait. Are you or is someone you know hypermobile and dealing with pain? In this episode, I speak with my podcast producer, Tony, all about hypermobility, and how it's often connected to chronic pain, injury, and even autonomic issues. I use neurology to explain why this might be, as well as discuss how I approach training hypermobile individuals to decrease pain, optimize interoception, and improve strength in end-ranges of motion. I also discuss how hypermobile individuals are often attracted to modalities centered around flexibility, why this might not be the best training tool for them, and why hypermobility can lead to mapping with pain instead of proprioception, especially at end-ranges of motion. This episode is a great starting point for tackling common issues associated with hypermobility and lays out practical training tools that you can implement right away to start to assess and improve movement and decrease pain in hypermobile individuals. Did you know that applied neurology isn't actually the goal? In this episode, I speak with my podcast producer, Tony, about the importance of a balanced strength and movement practice as the foundation for a healthy, fit, and pain-free life. I discuss my own training practice, the pros and cons of following a strict regimen vs following your intuition, why interoception is one of the most important things I teach, why I prioritize balance and coordination over strength, free weights vs machines, gait cycle, rate of perceived exertion and more. I outline the programming we follow in our Strength Dojo and how we integrate applied neurology throughout while still building strength, mobility, and resilience. I also caution the applied neurology enthusiasts against seeing everything in terms of targeted interventions when focusing on the fundamentals may be the solution they are seeking. This episode will empower you to better understand how your body responds to training, and to think about training in a more comprehensive way than just getting faster or stronger. What if your knee pain can be cured by smelling salts? In this episode, I speak with my podcast producer, Tony, all about the trigeminal nerve and why this large nerve in the face can have far reaching effects on the rest of the body. I discuss the anatomy of the trigeminal nerve, its primary functions, its connection to the brainstem and cranial nerves, and how these connections can manifest in surprising ways. I go over how to assess and train different aspects of the trigeminal nerve, using tools that range from touch, to motor control, to vision, to activating the nasal cavity through scent, and how you can use these tools today to improve trigeminal function, increase map clarity, reduce threat, and potentially reduce or eliminate pain or movement dysfunction. While the focus is on the trigeminal nerve, we cover a variety of related topics from jaw alignment, scoliosis, autonomic function, blood pressure, botox and more, and underscore the importance of not relying solely on biomechanical connections when dealing with pain and mobility issues. Have you ever heard someone say your vagus nerve needs a reset? In this episode, I speak with my podcast producer, Tony, all about the Vagus nerve and navigate the line between fact and fiction with regard to this increasingly popular focal point for health and movement professionals. I outline the anatomy of the vagus nerve and discuss why it's often called the "wandering nerve" because it connects to so many different vital organs and higher order systems in the body. By studying the anatomy of the vagus nerve, I show how it can be used therapeutically to target a myriad of different areas and functions of the body, and why its connective power is also why it's often so misunderstood. I discuss some common points of activation that I use to access the vagus nerve and clarify the map, as well as how to assess these interventions to make sure they are actually helping the client. This is a massive episode that covers a ton of ground from the parasympathetic system and vestibular system down to the interoceptive system and digestive system, and touches on inflammation, recovery, anxiety, depression, blood pressure, breathing, diet, balance and more. I also discuss the lymphatic system and some simple drills I use to improve recovery, and why I think it's so important for people to learn to listen to their own bodies. Are you managing chronic pain? Do you have the type of pain that "flares up?" Or, maybe your pain moves from one body part to another and you're constantly playing whack-a-mole with your pain. In today's episode, I speak with one of my very first instructors of applied neurology, Matt Bush, about signs and symptoms suggesting your brain and body are in need of fuel support. We talk about how your brain needs two things to stay alive - fuel and activation. And, your brain's preferred source of fuel is glucose along with oxygen. We talk about acute signs of a fuel deficit like decreases performance, increases in pain, a decrease in cognition and coordination, and increased emotional volatility. We cover what it looks like when you have a more longstanding fuel deficit that can lead to more systemic dysfunction, neural degeneration, emotional dysregulation and even metabolic disease. We share the physiology behind increasing oxygenation of your brain and tissues through CO2 tolerance training, the most important categories of breath training to consider to increase oxygen utilization at the cellular level, and styles of breathing to stay away from if you identify with having a fuel issue. We also cover how metabolic dysfunction may be the root of autoimmune illnesses, how ketosis is not a sustainable strategy for long term health, and which sources of carbohydrates are ideal, not just for brain health, but for overall metabolic health and wellbeing. What if you could solve your carpal tunnel or sciatic problems with a single drill? In this episode, I speak with my podcast producer, Tony, about a category of drills that directly target the peripheral nerves called neuromechanics. I discuss how the concept of mobility applies not only to the joints and muscles but also the nerves, how understanding the anatomy of nerves is crucial to understanding how to use neuromechanics correctly, and how to apply these concepts for real-world results with pain and mobility. I break down neuromechanic drills into three main categories - tensioning, slacking, and sliding, and explain how choosing different drivers can lead to almost limitless combinations with specific targets and effects. I also discuss how this category of drills is often misunderstood or misapplied, and what to watch out for when applying these drills to resolve specific pain issues or to simply mobilize the nerves for a broader training effect. Neuromechanic drills can be an extremely powerful tool when used correctly and this episode will help you hit the ground running so you can integrate them into your own practice. Have you ever experienced chronic pain? Maybe you've seen every practitioner and doctor and even tried surgery to resolve your pain, but years later you are still struggling? This is the story of Dojo member and yoga therapist, Krista Quinn. Over 10 years ago, Krista found us on instagram after battling a decade long of low back pain. A laminectomy at age 22 initially provided relief for a year or two but her pain came back with a persistent vengeance, putting her in and out of the emergency room. In this episode, Krista and I recall how we met, the first few sessions using applied neurology and how sensory work as strange and simple as smelling cinnamon, poking with a paper clip, applying kinesiotape, and some cerebellar training provided tremendous relief. Throughout our work together Krista went from a yogi who couldn't do a forward fold due to her back pain to practicing advanced arm balancing positions with ease and coaching others with chronic back pain. We also talk about a realistic timeline for getting out of chronic pain, the role of your mindset, and how behavior change is a huge factor in eliminating pain. Thank you to Dojo Member, Krista Quinn for sharing your story and for demonstrating the commitment and dedication required to overcome chronic pain.
