This episode is a race recap of the Run Rabbit Run 100 mile race. It has been a long journey to get to the finish line, but I am now a 100 mile finisher. What's next? Maybe 200? I hope you enjoy and learn something about the experience of 100 miles.
This race recap is about the Tommy Knocker 12 Hour Race in Golden, CO. Put on by Human Potential Running Series, it is easily one of the most interesting races I have done. Your fate is chosen by reaching into a bucket and choosing colored ping pong balls which denote which colored loop you will do next. No racer will have the same experience. Listen in to hear about this fun, curious race.
It has been a while since I have been able to put out a podcast and I am switching gears a bit. I have found that in preparation for my own races, I constantly search for content on those races to help me prepare and plan. Today's podcast is the race recap of the Never Summer 100k. Over 64 miles and 13000+ feet of climbing on this one equalled the hardest thing I have ever done (physically). Listen in on how it went as I worked my way to the farthest I have gone and the most I have climbed. Weather was not cooperative and left over 30% of the entrants not finishing! Like and subscribe and let me know if you have any questions or need assistance in planning your own race. OMNS
Today's episode is a little bit different. I talk about how I got into distance running and some of the mistakes I made along the way. From my first marathon ahead of the schedule I planned to completing my first ultramarathon while on the ketogenic diet, I have learned so much and want to impart some of that knowledge on others. As the podcast continues to grow, I would like to do a questions and answers episode where I field questions from the curious. So please, send me the questions you are interested in. Today we speak with a city councilman from the town of Hoover, AL, John Lyda. John and I met through the Mercedes Benz Half Marathon in Birmingham, AL in which he suffered a heat injury at mile 12.2. Thanks to the good samaritan running next to him, John was able to get down to the ground and have medical help called before things became critical. John was then able to piece the story together using video footage and closed circuit TV cameras in the area along with a news segment to find the samaritan and express his thanks. He recovered quickly and did not let the injury define his running abilities. A month later he accomplishged his goals by learning from his previous race experience. If you consider yourself a runner, you have had or will have a bad day while running. John bounced back and is still out there crushing it! Be sure to like and subscribe. Today's guest was Kristen Willoughby. Kristen's story was absolutely incredible. Diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at only 5 months of age, Kristen started running to help maintain lung function and reduce the efffects of her condition. By 19 she was no longer able to run a single lap at the track and her lung capacity reduced to around 30% and was continuing to drop. She found herself in critical condition and requiring the use of oxygen and constant help from family to survive. Late at night she received "the call" in which she was informed she would be receiving a dual lung transplant. Following her recovery, she started an epic journey -- running a full marathon on her new lungs. Always keeping her donor in mind, she lives life to the fullest and is happy to have her life back. This story was amazing. Like and subscribe! In today's episode, I have the honor of having a conversation with a fellow ultra-runner, Ashley Huffman. Ashley has completed several 24 hour races and has a current PR of 75 miles. Training to go back out for another 24 hour race, she gives some amazing advice to those wondering how she accomplishes such crazy distances and how she plans her training. We are also able to discuss the Badder Marsh Night Ultra, a race of which we both took part. Her story is amazing and her ability to handle pain is beyond compare! In today's episode, I had the pleasure to speak with Beth Choi. Beth is an attack survivor turned runner. In order to get away from the attacker, Beth had to jump out of a window resulting in a traumatic brain injury (TBI), 22 broken bones, and a 5 week coma. During her physical therapy in regaining her ability to walk, she started walking on a treadmill. The treadmill eventually turned into a love for running. 5 years after the attack, Beth ran the Philadelphia Marathon. The 6 mile point of the marathon was also the same location of her assault. This is her amazing story of how she overcame! What an inspiring story!
