Description
The People’s Colloquy is a podcast that aims to pierce through the fog around us with the high beam of good conversation.
We live in trying times that require us to band together and challenge the structures that keep us isolated from one another, because together, we can dismantle the barriers and hurdles that keep our nation shackled.
We resolve to leave the place in a better shape than we found it and deliver hope for the future so we can give our children something worth preserving.

We will be talking about John Law the first financial engineer, the gambler who changed the world. This topic was inspired by a youtube video created by Patrick Boyle on Finance. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5uKP...
His detailed video outlines the history of John Law and the story of the Mississippi bubble. I came across the channel when I was digging for information about the Gamestop saga, the presentation, informative content and dry humour had me trawling through his previous work for more goodies.
We will be doing an epistemicide exercise as prescribed by Dr Mvulane Moloi to get a feel for the Good the Bad and Ugly of this system we are living with by reflecting on where it all began and looking at the mastermind who put it together. In essence, we will go back to the start of the story to interrogate it. Discussing the system that John Law put together whose ideas and have spread globally and play a massive role in how finance and geopolitics work today.
This is the second half of the discussion on decolonising knowledge with Dr Tshepo Mvulane Moloi.
Aiming to unpick the knot we begin at architecture, we poke the notion of “indigenous knowledge”, dive into some of the lore of the ancestral realm and land on art.
The importance of knowing our past the people involved and their motivations is stamped all over this episode.
Dr Tshepo Mvulane Moloi showed us his workspace in the TPC Special Episode.
In this podcast Tshepo takes some time to outline the misconceptions, false starts and historical missteps that frustrate the effort to decolonise knowledge in South Africa.
Hip Hop has mattered from the moment the first beatbox combined and flowed with the first rhyme. Much like football the ingredients needed to put the game together are accessible and it was only a matter of time for Hip Hop to eclipse all other genres. Sage, Thabo, Nthato & Baholi
We are often told that Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) are the heart, soul, spirit, hope and future of our economy when the rubber hits the road however the true priorities of the powerful are unveiled. Small business owners know that they stand alone without much meaningful support. Fortunately the entrepreneurial spirit is not so easily damped. Through partnership and creativity new possibilities are unearthed and adversity is transformed into opportunity. A container, scrap metal and wood off cuts birth a livelihood for family and the community. We will be in conversation with Tumelo, co-owner of Maplankeng, about the emergence of the township economy. The perspective altering potential that growing up around a family run business had on him. The radical transformation that strong local businesses can bring to an area alongside the challenges, risks, possibilities and opportunities for business in Soweto.
Late last year I came across something interesting on the BRCSA website: the average household income in South Africa. The amount was just under R12 000 a month 64% of households earn under R10 000 a month and only 5% of households over R40k. The figure surprised and grounded me as I imagined what kind of sacrifices would have to be made if our household income were to fall to that amount of resources, I immediately counted my blessings because it would not be enough to cut some luxuries it would take a seismic shift to adjust to that sort of reality. Misery needs company so I decided to do a little survey in the office. I asked everyone who was on duty at that time how much they thought the amount was. When the responses were compiled I revealed the actual figures and even the cynical one who basically said minimum wage R3500 x 2 = R7 000 was visibly taken aback by the actual amount. Only one person was close and most of the responses were way above the figure. Considering the cost of living in the urbanized areas of the country the 5% above 40k are mostly not living lives of cake, custard, caviar and 3 cars the high prices for medical aid, transport, accommodation, communication, education and all the rest means that careful budgeting, debt management and tight control over expenses are the order of the day high and low. With 64% of households under R10 000 it is easy to see why we face such socio-economic hardship. South African families are struggling financially before lockdown many people were already living on the edge of ruin. The situation has only worsened since I read the survey. We are going to discuss which, if any, method of reorganising our society and the economy is most suitable to deal with this mess. To lead is to teach. Property executive Putu takes us to school.
Tumelo a F1 fanatic, petrol head, sim racer, and Red Bull supporter joins us for a chat about his fascination with F1.
TPC supporter Buhle Mtsweni joins us to discuss the articles written by Siyabonga Hadebe that provide the bedrock for this episode. We talk about the ANC and the bread riots that brought the army to Gauteng and Kwa Zulu Natal. The detailed articles outline and contextualise the problems that lead to the riot. The rotten heart and dysfunction of the ANC. The demonisation and control of black people, their culture, beliefs and even their hair. The economic system that sytematically breeds hunger, hopelessness and joblessness. The hypocrisy of South Africa's judicial system which is weak against crooks who steal millions but is potent and flexible when confronting folks who don't produce a proof of purchase for food, cheap clothes and appliances.
Political Scientist Dr. Tshepo Mvulane Moloi gives us a brief walkthrough of his library in Naledi, Soweto.
This impressive working collection was compiled to serve as part of the research material for his articles, talks and upcoming book.
A carefully composed selection specifically grouped by subject, perspective, timeline and author. This episode offers a unique insight into him, his reflections on significant books in the collection and his upcoming work on Es’kia Mphahele.

In this episode we will be honing in on some of the things discussed in the previous podcast with a focus on geopolitics.
Turkey is looking to recreate the Ottoman empire through the soft power of institutions and the coercive power of their military. Iran too Is looking to create a facsimile of the Persian empire to help fend off America. “The West” is still trying to maintain its grip too and expand where it can.
One can't afford to be a pacifist working your way forward by gently and meticulously brushing away sand with tiny tools in this environment of geopolitics, power, influence and resources.
A Pan-African agenda has to wrestle in this arena and must have teeth to achieve its goals.
These considerations are crucial to any kind of Pan-Africanist movement. What do they look like now and what can be done? What should that look like? How is that different from the malevolent imperial countries?
