Late last year I came across something interesting on the BRCSA website: the average household income in South Africa.  The amount was just under R12 000 a month 64% of households earn under R10 000 a month and only 5% of households over R40k.   The figure surprised and grounded me as I imagined what kind of sacrifices would have to be made if our household income were to fall to that amount of resources, I immediately counted my blessings because it would not be enough to cut some luxuries it would take a seismic shift to adjust to that sort of reality.  Misery needs company so  I decided to do a little survey in the office. I asked everyone who was on duty at that time how much they thought the amount was. When the responses were compiled I revealed the actual figures and even the cynical one who basically said minimum wage R3500 x 2 = R7 000 was visibly taken aback by the actual amount. Only one person was close and most of the responses were way above the figure.   Considering the cost of living in the urbanized areas of the country the 5% above 40k are mostly not living lives of cake, custard, caviar and 3 cars the high prices for medical aid, transport, accommodation, communication, education and all the rest means that careful budgeting, debt management and tight control over expenses are the order of the day high and low.  With 64% of households under R10 000 it is easy to see why we face such socio-economic hardship.  South African families are struggling financially before lockdown many people were already living on the edge of ruin.
