Well, we've come to the end of another season of the SFC Podcast. We hope that this season was a blessing to all of you, as we took a deep look at the gospel. We hope that your view/understanding of the gospel was expanded, and that you were encouraged by how relevant the gospel is to the "everyday stuff of life." In this final episode of "Saving the Gospel," Josh Stock and Ryan Leeds sit down to discuss some of their highlights from the past season. As Josh said in every "response pod," the goal is not consumption, it's transformation. We don't want to just consume information, we need to do something with it. So as we finish this season up, we encourage you to go back and to re-listen to some of these different episodes. Let it soak in. And keep talking about it with your friends. The more we talk about it, the more "gospel-fluent" we become. Well, folks, this is the last Response Pod of the season! And for this special episode, Josh Stock invited some living legends, former pro shred and his wife (who also riiiiiiips) Andy and Amber Finch. In response to the last two pods on Evangelism, Josh and the Finches address the murky middle-ground between the two popular extremes of evangelism; namely the more public, vocal gospel presentation and the quiet life of serving in the nature of the Gospel. Less a 'which-side-do-you-land-on' and more a 'how-do-we-live-in-the-tension-between-the-two' conversation, we hope this helps you chew on how you understand and practice evangelism. "Beauty just moves towards its replication...and so why wouldn't we think that [that] would be of use to evangelism and framing what the whole evangelism task is?" - Dr. Bryan Stone In this episode of "Saving the Gospel," Ryan interviews Dr. Bryan Stone from Boston University about the beauty of evangelism. Dr. Stone's unique perspective - on beauty and its relationship to evangelism - is something we all could learn from. So, sit back, relax, grab a pad and some paper, and enjoy this final episode on evangelism. There's something about evangelism that is just...hard. We don't like to admit that usually, because it doesn't sound very "pious." But the truth is that sharing our faith does not come naturally to many of us. So what do we do about that? Is there something we're missing? Is there some hidden trick and/or shortcut that makes this whole sharing thing easier? Well...no. Not necessarily. But most things in life that are worth doing are not easy. And could it be that God never intended for it to just be "easy"? Stay with me for a second...cause I know that sounds a little counterintuitive. What if God has a bigger plan? What if He is challenging us to take a risk? What if...that's the point? That by taking a risk, we step into something new and mysterious...and rewarding? In this episode of "Saving the Gospel," Josh Stock and Ryan Leeds interview Zane Black, co-founder of Lovin' Life - a gospel-advancing and discipleship ministry that is focused on waking and cultivating the next generation to live life to the fullest. Zane LIVES to see people impacted by the good news of Jesus and has spent the majority of his adult life talking with people about how they can THRIVE as disciples/ambassadors for Christ. Given his experience, we knew we had to get Zane on the podcast. He is unashamed of the power of the gospel, and we're confident that his passion will light a fire in your heart! So sit back, relax, and enjoy this next episode of...Saving the Gospel. Recently, Ted Lasso was quoted as saying, "Be Curious, not judgmental." What a simple lesson in engaging our culture with the desire to appreciate and not simply tolerate. In this week's Response Podcast, Josh hosts a conversation around the often-neglected topic of the Ethics of Evangelism (from Ryan's conversation last week with Dr. Rosalie Beck) with the SFC Support Office's own Alie Heenan and pow-surfing, German missionary in Japan, JP Koch. Listen in on the conversation as they discuss Tolerance that leads to Apathy, the Art of Listening and Faithfulness versus Fruitfulness. "There is a kind of truth which, when it is said, becomes untrue." I’ve been chewing on this statement recently. And it's made me think about the way that I go about evangelism. In my eagerness to share the good news, is it possible that I may have crossed a line? Is it even possible to cross a line when we're talking about the most important message that the world has ever known? How do we toe the line between fulfilling the Great Commission and honoring a person's freedom of choice. In this episode of "Saving the Gospel," Ryan Leeds interviews Dr. Rosalie Beck, a former professor at Baylor University, about the Ethics of Evangelism. We hope that you tune into this episode because we have a hunch that it might address some issues (or questions) that lurk beneath the surface - that make sharing our faith feel difficult and/or uncomfortable. In this week's episode, Joshua Stock hosts Liz Wallace and Greg Galasso from Summit County, CO in another Response Podcast. Per usual, they share their Hot Takes, Humble Pies, and Hot Lap responses to Ryan's interview with Luke Cawley, author of The Myth of the Non-Christian. Tune in to hear Josh, Liz, and Greg process through Luke's interview. We hope that this conversation will serve as a model for your own conversations on this topic! Is it possible that we've embraced a one-size-fits-all type of mentality when it comes to our evangelism? Maybe. And maybe that's why it can often feel difficult or awkward to share our faith with others. Maybe it's time that we learned how to contextualize the gospel in different ways to connect with different kinds of people. In this episode of "Saving the Gospel," Ryan speaks with Luke Cawley, author of, The Myth of the Non-Christian: Engaging Atheists, Nominal Christians and the Spiritual But Not Religious, about how we might better engage the unchurched in our communities. So tune in...because we are confident that this episode will challenge you to think about your approach to evangelism/apologetics a little differently. Have you ever wondered what makes a community focused on Jesus any different than any other type of community; a bowling team, a jeep club, a gathering of falconry enthusiasts? What makes Jesus communities so special?! It can't just be the free food and acronyms that keep people coming back for more. In this week's episode, our office's resident Old Man and Keeper of the Vision, Joshua Stock hosts Sarah Tschanz-Nicolaisen of Thun, Switzerland and Katrina Keefe of Gunstock, New Hampshire in another Response Podcast. They fire off Hot Takes, Humble Pies and Hot Lap responses to Ryan's interview with Bethany Allen from Bridgetown Church in Portland, Oregon (Episode 8). From Jesus's cheat code that unlocks otherworldly community-staying power to the visual image of Jesus carving the 'wooden bowls' of our hearts to 'what Jesus smells like on the clothing of our lives'...this episode will have you considering the power and potential of your own personal role in your community. Community. We were created for it. And whether we realize it or not, we NEED it. We thrive and flourish best when we exist in and contribute to a community. But what makes a GOSPEL community different? Because there are tons of communities out there, right? So why not just pick one that lines up with something that interests us and lean into that? Well, you can do that. There's nothing wrong with doing that. But there is something special about a gospel-centered community...a community that is centered on JESUS. What is it, you may ask? Well, listen in as Ryan and Lauren Leeds interview Bethany Allen from Bridgetown Church in Portland, OR. We trust that you will be challenged and blessed by what you hear/learn in this episode of "Saving the Gospel." Jesus had emotions, too. Crazy, huh? Sometimes it can be easy to overlook the fact that Jesus had to navigate the same emotional currents that we all have to navigate. But as the author of the book of Hebrews says, Jesus is our Great High Priest - the ONE who can sympathize with us in EVERY WAY. That means that Jesus knows what it is like to have emotions and desires. And not only does He know what it's like to have them...He also cares about YOUR emotions and desires. In this episode of "Saving the Gospel," Ryan and Alie interview Emily Woody, Director of Residency and Internships at Gospel Community Church in Lynchburg, VA. Emily is a gifted speaker/teacher who has given a lot of thought to how the Gospel intersects with our emotional life, so we're confident that you will find some gems in this episode. Have you ever caught yourself thinking, "Oh crap. I should have prayed about this before I tried to do it on my own. Maybe I should have stopped and checked with Jesus before I shouted...HEY JESUS, on your left!" Maybe the reason we struggle to become gospel fluent people is because we have passed Jesus in order to focus on other things that we think might bring us wholeness. In this episode of "Saving the Gospel," Ryan and Josh sit down with Jeff Vanderstelt (author of Gospel Fluency and Saturate) to talk about the ways we might be missing OR PASSING Jesus in our discipleship journeys. A well-tattooed, grown man who rides kids' bikes, a guy with a mustache that looks like it belongs in a 1978 western film and an old man with a poorly-bleached mohawk walk into a bar...no, they walk into a podcast...actually, maybe they "stumble" into a podcast...you get the picture. It's another unique conversation. In this week's Response Pod, Josh recruits SFC's Southwest Regional Director, Drew Loring, and Nick Hart, founder of "Flow," a non-profit youth organization based out of Santa Cruz, CA, to respond to last week's episode -- where Ryan interviewed Mark Scandrette (author of Practicing the Way of Jesus: Life Together in the Kingdom of Love). For those of you who are unfamiliar with Nick, or his ministry Flow, we'd encourage you to visit his website by clicking HERE. Flow exists to empower youth and create belonging (through actions sports and various after school programs). Flow and SFC are kindred spirits, so we're stoked to have Nick and Drew on the podcast this week. We hope that you are encouraged (and challenged) as you listen to how this rambunctious crew processes what it looks like to embody the gospel of King Jesus. Do any of you remember that crazy interview that happened a few years back with NBA Legend, Allen Iverson (AI)!? When questioned about his attendance at team practices, AI went on a crazy rant stating: "We talkin' 'bout practice. Not a game. Not a game. Practice." AI couldn't believe that the press would try to rake him over the coals for missing practice. I mean...it wasn't a game. What more would you want from him? He was THE franchise player for the 76ers! But practice is important, right? Practice helps us to develop and mature. Without practice, we wouldn't grow...we'd stay stagnant. And we believe that the same is true of the Christian life. In this episode of "Saving the Gospel," Ryan interviews Mark Scandrette, author of Practicing the Way of Jesus: Life Together in the Kingdom of Love. Mark is a HUGE FAN of practice. And what makes his book so compelling is that he has devoted his life to practicing the way of Jesus with others in his community. So listen in...we think you'll take a lot of way from this interview. Okay, so are you ready for something a little different!? As you may have heard in our intro episode to "Saving the Gospel," this season...we'll be dropping a new kind of episode from time-to-time - something we're affectionally calling "response pods." In these episodes, Josh Stock recruits some "shred industry experts" to respond to some of the different gospel conversations that are featured on this season of the podcast. Our hope is that these response episodes will help us to apply some of the lessons we're learning this season. In this episode, Josh Stock interviews Alie Heenan and Stefan Seeling (two Summit County, CO locals) about last weeks episode with Dr. Matthew Bates (author of "Why the Gospel?"). We hope that you are encouraged (and challenged) as you listen to how the crew processes through what it means to "live life in the monarchy." In this episode of "Saving the Gospel," Ryan sits down with Dr. Matthew Bates - author of Why the Gospel: Living the Good News of King Jesus with Purpose - to talk about the WHY of the gospel. The SFC podcast is back with a brand-new, thought-provoking theme for this 2023/24 season (and a title that might sound a bit pretentious at first glance - bear with us). Lets nutshell this thing, because who reads podcast episode descriptions anyway?! Have you ever felt like there was a disconnect between what the early church looked like, and what Church looks like now? Have you ever thought about what it must have been like to live in the days that followed Jesus’ death, resurrection and ascension - where the church shared everything in common and grew despite massive obstacles and persecution? What an experience that must have been!!! Maybe it seems like a dream scenario is because, if we can be honest, sometimes it seems like the early church was captivated by something MUCH BIGGER than what we experience in our daily lives. In this series, we deep-dive on the Gospel: what it meant to the early church, what it did in our hearts when we first heard it, how we can reinvigorate that same kind of gospel-spreading-like-wildfire, life-changing, worldview-shaping way? Is it possible to resuscitate, redefine and recapture the wonder of the gospel…to realign ourselves with the beauty that so captivated the early church and led them to TURN THE WORLD UPSIDE DOWN? Explore with us this season as we interview authors and experts in the theological, philosophical and ethical fields of our faith alongside experts in the shred culture. Join us as we commit to Saving the power and the beauty and the place of the Gospel as the most important thing in our lives. Welcome back to episode nine of this season of the SFC Podcast. This season, we’ll be diving into some talks we had at our annual SFC conference in Waterville Valley, New Hampshire — which was held back in November.
