The Value of Midwives and Women Centred Care by NSWNMA
On this episode Shaye speaks with Coffs Harbour midwife, Amanda Bailey Derrett
Growing up in the Philippines, Catherine didn't see much of her mum who left when she was six to work around the world as an RN, coming back only a few times a year to visit. Twenty one years later, Catherine joined her mum in Australia, as a single mum and began studying nursing as an international student.  When I asked Catherine to describe what her role as a care manager in aged care entails she said "I always tell the families of my residents that in their absence I am your family member's biggest advocate." Catherine's story is a heart warming tale of perseverance and finding your calling in an often overlooked specialty.  If you have ever been curious to work in aged care, looking for a career change, or are a new grad who has missed out on a placement- this podcast episode is for you.
As General Secretary of the Queensland Nurses and Midwives Union, Sarah Beaman is a proud nurse, feminist and unionist. Sarah's union journey all started at the grass roots level following a conversation with her union organiser, when she asked what the union was doing about an entitlement she was no longer receiving. What Sarah's organiser said next shocked her, spurred her into action and to fight to improve the lives of nurses and midwives across Queensland. Listen now to Sarah's story and learn about how Queensland nurses and midwives won the battle for ratios and fair pay in their state.
On this episode of the Shift with Shaye we are joined by fellow nurse Michelle Cutmore. Michelle is a board director of the Congress of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Nurses and Midwives or CATSINaM for short, and was recently elected president of NSWNMA Member Circle. Michelle’s passion for nursing is driven by a desire to provide grass roots care within the community, and help empower and enable Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to become nurses and midwives.
