In 1699, at the premiere of his newest masterpiece, renowned stage magician Jean Jacquline Lemarque caused the 2nd or 3rd greatest disappearance-related theatrical tragedy in history…In 1932, a prickly German theater artist, an American conman, and an unfortunately-named mechanical engineer globetrot from Berlin to Paris to Hollywood, encountering artistic geniuses, secret societies, and plagiarists in an attempt to unfold the mystery of Lemarque’s Vanishing Act... or at the very least avoid doing any actual work. The Vanishing Act is a scripted comedy series, a heist, a con, a murder mystery, and a disappearing act all at once, finding a slew of off-color characters at odds with art, fame, magic, and history in the making. Due to the intense secrecy of their relationship, they miscommunicate, with Conrad taking the Juliet role and Phoebe Romeo. Conrad believes it is his fault and has never obtained closure. This is heavily stylized to reference Romeo and Juliet throughout.

The writing is superb; the dialogue is so densely packed with jokes that each listen reveals some I didn't notice before. The VAs in this show sound like they are having a blast while recording and it goes a long way in elevating the already excellent script. The sound design and editing are impeccable. Similar to the high concentration of jokes, the episodes are packed with fun environmental sounds which make the lines even funnier. The timing is tight and the pace doesn't let up. There are times in S1 when a lot of characters were being introduced and it was easy to feel a little lost, but thankfully none of the material feels superfluous or boring and it doesn't take long for the rubber to meet the road. Also this is not an issue in S2, which is shorter and more streamlined. I love this show and the theme song is a banger. Thanks to the cast and crew for all they do.
