So I want to tell those of you who are single some aspects I didn’t think about of what marriage would be like. Giving you a heads up, something to prepare for, and to look forward to.
I also share what to look for in a spouse and how important this decision actually is! DO NOT SETTLE!

One thing I’ve come to realize and love about my relationship with my husband (there are many) is that we are on the same page politically, morally, and religiously. These are important things to note when you are dating someone and talking about marriage. No, you don’t have to agree on everything, but in my opinion the big stuff you should.
If you are single, dating, talking about getting married, I would ask these 3 questions
What are their religious beliefs?
What are their morals?
What are their political views?
These are hard topics to discuss, I get it, but they are vitally important in a relationship. Think about it, you want to spend the rest of your life with this person. This is the person you will be making all your decisions with. This is the person you will be raising your children with. This is the person you are sharing your finances with. This is the person you will live with. This is an important decision. I cannot stress this enough!!

Do you know what you are looking for in a partner? Do you know the characteristics and traits they would have?
If you answered no to these questions, it may be time to sit down and write out a list of what you are looking for in a future partner. I'm not talking about physical traits. I'm talking about if they love Jesus, are loyal, outgoing, fun to be around, have a sense of humor, have integrity.
Someone suggested I write out a list of what I was looking for in a future husband. I searched my heart for what I truly wanted in a partner and invited God into the process. My list is about 6 pages of characteristics and at the end I wrote out a prayer.
This may be something you need to do to become clear as to who you are looking for. This made dating less overwhelming for me and I was able to sift through guys I didn't want to date because of this list.
This list is not meant for you to be closed minded, but it will help you be firm in your non-negotiables and not settle.
I want to hear from you! If you decide to make a list tell me! You can DM me on instagram @nikki.houseman or send me an email nikkilhouseman@gmail.com

There was a point in time when I was set on meeting my future husband “organically.” I had this dream that I would meet him through friends, mutual friends, or doing something I love. I didn't want my story to be "we met online."
With diving into my relationship with Jesus, working on myself, and truly wanting to be with a quality guy, I started to change my mindset around online dating.
My mantra became it doesn't matter how I meet my husband, it's who he is. With this shift I was able to go into online dating with a new perspective and trust that God can use any situation for me to meet my husband.
Dating online isn't easy, but with the help of my dating coach I was able to put parameters around online dating to make it not so overwhelming and discouraging for me.
I have complied those tips into a free guide for you to use yourself. It's called "Do's and Don'ts of Online Dating." If you would like this free guide, click here!

Maybe you think the reason you are not dating the people you want or aren't dating at all is because of who you are. Maybe you feel you need to change aspects of who you are in order for people to want to date you. I'm here to tell you this is not true!

What is the hardest part about being single?
This is a question I’ve been reflecting on recently. It has brought up some hard moments for me and I share these with you. This is a vulnerable question and I give you an honest answer. I had moments of crying myself to sleep because I was so sad and disappointed.
I decided I needed Jesus in those moments. I also chose to dwell on what I did have not what I didn’t have. I share what those are with you.

Questions to ask yourself:
Am I making excuses for his behavior?
Do I feel uneasy about a behavior of his?
Is something inside me trying to tell me I am not in a healthy relationship?
Do I feel convicted that something is wrong?
Are my friends and family trying to warn me about something in this relationship?
Am I looking out for these red flags as I navigate the dating world?
What are other red flags I need to be aware of? Write them down.
Red Flags:
He is not pursuing you
you see his potential, but he’s not walking in it
Lacks follow through
Doesn’t have a relationship with God
Says all the right things, but doesn’t act on it. He’s all talk.
He asks you to do things for him when he doesn’t do much for you and makes you feel bad about it.
Doesn’t treat you with respect and pushes your boundaries
Talks about other girls while he is on a date with you or around you
He is on his phone most of the time you are together, and isn’t engaging with you.
Talks about himself the whole time you are on a date and/or always brings the conversation back to himself
He is a jealous type
He gets angry or raises his voice at you or others
Prioritizes himself and his feelings over you.
Talks down to you and doesn’t elevate and uplift you and who you are
He doesn’t have a solid group of guy friends
In this episode, I discuss the foundations of marriage according to a book I've been reading. It's call "Happy Wives Club" by Fawn Weaver. If you are a wife and haven't read this book, I encourage you to do so. She visits 12 countries, 6 continents, with 1 mission, to find the secret of marriage. She interviews a number of married couples and they all say the same secret!
I dive into what the Bible says the role of a husband and wife are. I mention Ephesians 5:22, 25 saying wives submit to your husbands, and husbands love your wives as Christ loves the church. The world has taken these verses out of context. Women think they don't need a man and can stand in the role of a man. This is a wrong way of thinking. According to scripture, both play important roles in a marriage.
If you are single, what I talk about in this episode is important to keep in mind and prepare your heart for what is to come. The way you can prepare is to have an intimate relationship with Jesus.

You may be thinking, will I ever meet someone worthwhile? Will it ever be my turn? Will dating lead me to meeting someone I want to spend the rest of my life with?
The answer is YES! DO NOT SETTLE! I had a coworker tell me I needed to compromise what I was looking for in a partner. I’m so glad I didn’t listen to her. You do not need to compromise or settle. I know it can be hard. I had moments I would meet someone and think, I guess I could date this person, yet they didn’t have some key traits I was looking for in a partner. Do not settle. Do not lower your criteria just to be with someone. It’s not worth it!
In this episode I share ways to not settle and to keep your expectations. Dating can be hard and discouraging at times. Don't give up! The right person will show up.
It took me 10 years. I have some interesting stories around dating, but now I have the most amazing husband and it was all worth it! I never thought I would get to the point of thinking all the pain and suffering I went through I would be grateful for. But here we are. There were many amazing a good moments as well. During that time I learned a lot about myself, God, and who I wanted in a life partner.
Listen all the way to the end because I give practical tips on how to get yourself ready to date. You can start today!

Don't waste away the season you are in looking forward to the next one. Once I came to the realization that I could accomplish many goals I had and work on becoming the best version of myself, the more fulfilled, and purposeful I felt in my singleness. I had a deep desire to be married, so I decided to use the time of singleness to prepare myself to be the best wife I could be one day.
I've now been married for 10 months, and my husband and I are happy and have a healthy relationship. In this episode, I share why this is and how you too can start preparing now to have a healthy relationship one day!

I chat with my friend Kristy about entrepreneurship, her business, singleness, and meeting our husbands later in life.
In this episode she shares about how and why she started her business. She had a dream at 15 years old of having a skin care line one day, and many years later her dream became a reality. This episode is filled with lots of wise nuggets and encouragement for those of you who are single and how to prepare.
Some things we shared
God doesn't give us desires to be cruel
Maximize the season you are in.
Be happy in each season.
It is not the job of the other person (spouse) to make you happy.
Prepare yourself to be the best version of yourself you can be.
Continue to stay in faith.
There’s a balance of staying present and wishing for what is ahead.
It’s ok to have the down moments, why me? When is it going to happen for me?
Trust God’s timing. You may be ready, but the other person may not.
Singleness is a beautiful time. Use the time to focus on yourself. Self awareness is key.
Allow God to be the author of your story. It's different than anyone else's.

The number one thing to ensure you are in a healthy relationship… Do you know what it is???
Marriage does not complete you. It does not solve your problems. It does not fix things that need fixing.
Single friend, I see you. You are enough. You are not forgotten. You are important. You are in a VERY important season you will never get back! Don't take it for granted. Don't wish it away for the next thing. Now is the time to do the things you've been wanting to do. You have no distractions, you don't have another person you need to split your time with. Now is the time to dive deep into your relationship with Jesus. He is waiting for you.
Questions to reflect on:
What is God teaching me in this season?
Am I wishing away the season I am in?
Am I focusing on my purpose, goals, dreams?
Do I have a plan to accomplish those goals and dreams?
