I had the pleasure of meeting with powerhouse and ultimate go-getter, Olamide Bada. After studying Law at SOAS, completing her Post-grad at the University of Law and going on to land a role at international law firm, Baker McKenzie, Olamide packed up her bags (and law career) and took to Nigeria for 2 years to take on the world of business. Here she quickly rose from SWAT Team Manager at Jumia Nigeria to Managing Director of Jumia Food; miles from her humble beginnings in London. For her work at Jumia Food, Olamide has since been featured by Bella Naija as their #BellaNaijaWCW and was awarded the Prize for Professional Service at The Future Awards Africa in 2017. We sat down to talk about creating a seat at the table, being your full self in a corporate environment and the realities of moving back "home". Entrepreneurship, ministry, speaking, writing; individually Ayo and Susan Oduniyi are powerful, purposeful leaders making waves in this generation through boldly sharing the love of Christ - but collectively as a married couple, they are an utter force. In this first part of our conversation, we sit down to discuss their journey to marriage and what they have had to overcome to get there. Proving not every love story is daisies, but requires work - Susan shares about her own insecurities having lost her parents and become homeless at a young age - whilst Ayo opens up about forgiveness and his own his journey to love. Both finding their hope in Christ. Stay tuned for part 2 where we discuss purpose and what it looks like when you are playing to win on the same team. The two reflect on lessons learnt in their first year of marriage. And a topic dear to their hearts, Ayo and Susan open up about church hurt as we explore the question “what do you do when the church betrays you?”. From the moment I met Joy Ubani, at her first London Beneath Your Beauty event, I knew she had something special. From her organic understanding of content creation and branding, to her faith-based approach to entrepreneurship - there's so much value to gleam from this Brand marketing girl who I have the privilege of calling a friend. In the penultimate episode of this season, I sit down with LA-born Joy to talk about her journey from Psychology and counselling to branding and events management. We talk about the birth of her baby, Beneath Your Beauty and her "why". Finally, Joy shares how she made the transition from full time to working for herself, the influence of her Nigerian parents, and spills the tea on some branding tips you won't want to miss. It's rare that I record unscripted and unplanned but when a conversation compels you, you create. And so inspired by an Instagram post from Bumblebizz which I recently shared on my Instagram stories instagram.com/p/Bss_9bclqvD/ - here are my thoughts on finding fulfilment in a career. Can a job really bring fulfilment to all areas of life? What happens when our job is our passion, or purpose? What does fulfilment look like for me? For you? In this think-piece episode, I hope to inspire an open discussion and also deep introspective thought, so that when it comes to careers, we can uncover and better define what truly matters to us. Because when we get clear on that, the pursuit of fulfilment becomes easier. Be sure to join the conversation by sharing your thoughts across all platforms @debrachosen, using #TTPPodcast. Each year-end, I sit with my thoughts and prayers and listen out for the mantra for the new year. This year, two words were loud and clear in my ears. "Level up". The year for higher heights, smashing ceilings and standing in rooms you once deemed too grand. It's level up season and I truly am so excited for all the goodness that is to come for AND from all of us as we become the highest versions of ourselves. In this episode I share 5 ways to level up, be the best version of yourself and ultimately lay hold of all that God has in-store for you in 2019. Get ready for next-level you. Super excited to announce that I have teamed with the good people at Bumble Bizz to host the very first Trusting The Process LIVE event this Wednesday 6th March. In honour of International Women’s Day, on Wednesday 6th March I’ll be joined for an intimate conversation and Q&A with fellow believer & founder of Pepper Your Talk and TheJuniorNetwork (https://www.pepperyourtalk.co.uk/thejuniornetwork/), Dior Bediako. Featured in notable publications and spaces such as Refinery 29 and Stylist Live, Dior is a force to be reckoned with. From landing a role with the high-end luxury brand Burberry, as a black woman in an unfamiliar space Dior was soon launched into a new world where she was required to learn skills such as negotiation, networking and navigating the workplace, fast. She quickly saw that the issues she faced were widespread and sought to fix that. Quitting her job at Burberry, Dior stepped out in faith launching Pepper Your Talk; the unique platform created to help others find their feet within the industry. Members' club, #TheJuniorNetwork, soon followed. By maximising her network and identifying a solution to a problem, Dior has built her own table where women can navigate their careers with creativity and confidence. On the night, we’ll be unpacking the gems in her career journey from fashion grad to biz owner. From financial challenges to FOMO, we’re sharing the real tea on entrepreneurship. Come and learn from topics such as networking effectively and how to build a business that serves others as we ask “what happens when we pivot from asking for a seat at the table, and instead build our own?” LIMITED TICKETS available NOW: http://bit.ly/TTPlive
On Wednesday 6th March, over 50 people gathered together for the very first #TTPlive event, in partnership with the amazing people at Bumble. For me, the entire evening was a dream come true. From talking about a topic dear to my heart - The Courage to Take Up Space and interviewing the refreshingly brilliant Dior Bediako live, I feel incredibly fortunate to be able to share this with you. If you were there on 6th, then you'll know just how juicy this conversation with Dior of Pepper Your Talk and The Junior Network was. Now I'm giving you the opportunity to sit in the room too, because we're all family! From what it really takes to launch a business to navigating the workplace as a black woman - we cover it all. So plug in, pull out your notebook and get ready to digest some guaranteed gems.
Every so often I meet someone who embodies excellence in all that they do. Hannah Ajala is one of those people. Since having the pleasure of hosting her launch party for We Are Black Journos, I have been honoured to have front row seats to the growth and journey Hannah is on. With 5 years under her belt at the prestigious BBC, at the age of 25 Hannah recently joined the BBC Africa team where her passion and creativity are making waves in sharing our stories. When she's not slaying news reports and creating viral documentaries - Hannah is a self professed "Jack of all trades, master of all". Founding movements and organisations such as mentorship programme "Pursue Your Passion", black travel community, "Black British Travel Meet Up" and women's Christian fellowship, "Ladies Who Fellowship", it's fair to say that she has her hand in many pots. In this episode (part 1 of my conversation with Hannah) we explore just how she balances so many passions and why it is important that we do the things that make us come alive. We talk about the face of journalism and ask what moves are being made in diversity and inclusion, and we also unpack what it takes to do a TED Talk, and find that rejection is often God's form of redirection. Continuing this intimate conversation with BBC journalist and all round go-getter, Hannah Ajala. Exploring the rise and popularity in black travel, Hannah shares more about her organisation Black British Travel Meet Up as we discuss why community is so important. Digging deeper into our love for travel we talk about favourite locations, how to travel on a budget and solo travel as a method of healing. For this intimate episode, I sat down with none other than social media/photographer extraordinaire and my friend - Dorothy Tamuno, co-founder of Social Media Live and the face behind some of Instagrams hottest shoots. A highly requested conversation, I knew I had to have Dorothy on the podcast to share her story from quitting her 9-5 in the corporate world, to building her own creative business which she runs with her husband Precious Tamuno. Now 4 years on since leaving the Finance world, Dorothy is the definition of booked busy and blessed and you may or not be surprised to find that God's guidance had a LOT to do with it. In this second part of our conversation with social media and photography queen Dorothy Tamuno, we talk all things relationships. What does the wedding planning process reveal to us about our friendships? How can we better manage our expectations to avoid inevitable disappointment? Reflecting on her upbringing, Dorothy talks about spending the most part of her adolescence without her father, and the impact that had on her approach to affection. We delve deeper into what running a business with your husband is like and finally, Dorothy and I discuss the concept of waiting and why it’s entirely necessary for our growth. With Mental Health in the black community being so close to my heart, it was important for me to have this conversation with the phenomenal being that is Sutra. Sutra is the founder of the platform that is making vulnerability cool again, Poll Therapy (instagram.com/polltherapy). Doctor by profession, artist by nature (including music and literary work) Sutra boldly revels in being many things - and does it with grace. In episode 15, we sat down during Mental Health Awareness week to have an honest conversation around experiencing a loss of joy. How a close dance with death changed everything and the role of art and faith in her own healing process. We talk about discovering her creative voice in medical school. And delving deeper into topics within Sutra’s debut book “Marrow”, we unpack identity and what home looks like for Ghana-raised Sutra. Continuing our conversation with doctor, artist and writer Sutra, we pick things back up from the near-death experience that changed everything. Bravely, Sutra shares the realities of the effects of burnout and depression and how her mental health had hit an all-time low. But she didn't stay there. We discover how what looked like a tragedy became the turning point in her journey of practicing self-care and maintaining her well being. Discussing the importance of being honest with yourself first, and then others, we learn how opening up, faith and love brought Sutra back to life.
