Purgatory AKA Mid-2010s WWE. Most of it was good/fine, but it still all felt the same. Roman is being forcefully pushed, there is still a Diva's Division, and we are just starting the AJ Styles Era of WWE. Nope, not the one that involved Al Capone. This one featured a worthwhile beginning, a memorable end, and what the hell was the middle. Not even the PER of Cool champ D'Lo Brown could save us from an hour of meaningless content. But hey, we got to see Vince get his ass beat, Goldust be over, and Mankind retaining the WWF Title... sort of. The only thing "extreme" about Extreme Rules 2018 was how long it was. Despite the novelty of having the IC title in the main event, the rest of the card felt lazy. Styles-Rusev was a treat, the B-Team was fun, KO tried to die, but nothing felt genuine. Just a C+ PPV that went an hour too long. ECW, sometimes maybe great, sometimes maybe awful. While most of the undercard is haphazard, the big names that ECW had really showed out. Taz murders jabrones, Sandman wants his mom, Stevie Richards heels it up, and Scorpio-Sabu SLAPS. Part 1 put guys on base, Part 2 drove them home. WrestleMania 26's main events were STACKED: Streak v Career, Batista v Cena, Jericho v Edge. Technical prowess, incredible feats of strength, fantastic story telling, enormous stakes. Oh, there was also the women's match that was less showcase and more tragicomedy. 2010 was a simpler time, when Mania was one night instead of two. However, that meant they were always long as hell. With Part 1, we start with some of the solid undercard, highlighted by Money In The Bank and Sheamus v HHH in a grudge match, before ending with a 10 minute old man fight that honestly sours the memory of the Hitman. It's the smelly smell that smells smelly, death of WCW era, but the scent is only just starting to form. Beyond the opening matches, which features the always over Filthy Animals, the surprisingly competent ICP, Kaz Hayashi, and an insensitive gimmick, there's not much to latch on to. The Revolution bust their ass putting over has-beens, Buff screws everyone, and Hogan must be protected. WHO CAN YOU TRUST? What does this era of WWF and 2017 WWE have in common? Passable to great undercard matches with one match that had no business taking place and a main event that underwhelms. Trips and The Dumpster brawled, 1-2-3 Kid was buried with a capital shovel, and the Undertaker stole the show in the main event. Also, Shawn Michaels showed just how HIM he was in 1996. New music, new day, No Mercy 2017, and the same Marks. We all remember this PPV for one reason: John Cena absolutely punking Roman Reigns on the mic on the build to their match. The match delivered, but it was far from the only one. Jason Jordan showed why he looked like Kurt 2.0, the Woman's *insert better Fatal 5-Way Name here* for the RAW title killed it, and Cesaro got a surprise lobotomy from his two front teeth. While it seems we have been unfortunate every time we head to the Attitude Era, we finally got something worthwhile and memorable. Lots of memorable and iconic tag teams, Bubba Ray Dudley's obsession with Trish Stratus and wood, and just a couple of Canadian Chris's duking it out make up most of the entertaining undercard. In the main event, The Rock is counting on his biggest rival Stone Cold in order to combat the McMahon-Helmsley alliance for the WWE Championship. Black and Gold NXT, has there ever been a better combination of story-telling, talent, and presentation? Even with *checks notes* EIGHTY PERCENT of this card no longer with WWE, for several reasons, this card is peak NXT content. Redebuting the WarGames match, a perfect by all accounts conclusion to Aleister Black & Velveteen Dream's rivalry, and a highspot 4-Way for the Women's Title. Here we are, the conclusion of the nWo storyline, the final collision between Sting and Hollywood Hogan. WCW's greatest storyline, culminating at their biggest event of the year, Starrcade. How could they screw this up? Well, pretty spectacularly in the most boring fashion. A classic nWo overbooked mess from top to bottom, including 27 minutes of Buff Bagwell and Eric Bischoff matches. After Eddie Guerrero and Dean Malenko set the tone early, nothing else really comes close to matching their energy. Get it, "Souled" Out, Sold Out? Anyway, after the fallout that was Starrcade 1997, WCW tried to kick start 1998 with this nWo influenced PPV. While the World Title drama is mentioned, the main event was... Lex Luger v Macho Man in a non title bout that lasted 7 minutes. This despite having a wonderful Flair-Hart match on the card. We also had some incredible luchador action, Jericho and Mysterio making lemonadel, nWo overbooking, and Benoit looking like the Bryan Danielson prototype. WE BACK! We take another Bash at the Beach off the board, this time the 1994. Headlined by Ric Flair vs Hulk Hogan in a dream match that isn't revered as such, WCW loaded up with enough stars to make Vince blush. Antonio Inoki, Steve Austin, Ricky Steamboat, Vader, Shaq, Mr. T, Kevin Sullivan *record scratch* Kevin Sullivan? Also, much like how "Hogan Must Pose", "Marks Must Wax Poetic About Regal". MARK. IT. DOWN. Let's get to the weird. COVID made us all a little crazy, but maybe not as crazy as Ethan Page. As his IMPACT contract was coming to an end, Page had an idea that would make Matt Hardy blush: he would feud with HIMSELF. Thus, Karate Man was born, deep within Page's psyche, leading to the last time Ethan Page would be seen alive (on IMPACT). MARK. IT. DOWN. Showcasing women's wrestling in this series is long overdo, so let's toss out one of the best matches ever, no filters necessary. Big Bad Aja Kong faced off with "Flying Angel" Manami Toyota in the first round of the V*TOP Five Star Tournament at Big Egg Wrestling Universe 1994, but this was a match fit for the finals. Tremendous heat, insane moves, and Japanese tables, this match had it all. Kong v Toyota: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wANjnGYUdvo&ab_channel=suspectTV. MARK. IT. DOWN. We have had two extremely violent matches, so let's throw a curveball at ya. We head to Mexico for Villano v Atlantis in CMLL, where masks are on the line. This back and forth affair hits a lot of notes: plenty of near falls, crimson masks, and noteworthy refereeing. Truly a piece of art. MARK. IT. DOWN. We go from beautiful violence, to, well, unscripted violence. Before Dean Ambrose ever was a twinkle in Vince's eye, Jon Moxley was just a psycho who enjoyed destroying his body and his opponents' by any means necessary. Just read his book and you'll know that. But his match in Tournament of Death 8 against deathmatch legend Brain Damage is the match he cites as his come up, putting the crowd in a frenzy. Jon Moxley has been over ever since. MARK. IT. DOWN. SHIBATA IS BACK (kinda). Fresh off his Rampage appearance against Orange Cassidy, we sought out a match where Shibata was at the peak of his powers. David selected this G1 entry against Ishii, which is a slobberknocker that would make JR blush. Nonstop action, brutal strikes, fantastic story telling. Watch, then listen.
