Being sad is a part of life as we all experience a wide range of emotions on a daily basis. But sometimes in society there seems to be a message that if you're sad, there must be something wrong. Well that's simply not always true! It's okay to feel down, and we explore the reasons behind our emotions, breaking down the stigma around sadness.
We don't have to smile through the sadness or pretend like everything is ok, it is healthy to feel all those feelings. Sometimes it could be very evident why we are sad, but other times there may not even a particular reason we may be feeling this way. It doesn't mean you're not an overall happy person or that you're not a positive person. Not at all! We all get sad from time to time.
However, we also discuss the crucial distinction between occasional bouts of sadness and persistent feelings of depression. While embracing our emotions is vital, we strong recommend people seek professional help when the weight of sadness becomes overwhelming and chronic. While this podcast offers insights, support, and a platform for open conversations about mental health, it is essential to recognize that it is not a substitute for seeking professional help, especially if you or someone you know is dealing with persistent feelings of depression. We strongly encourage reaching out to qualified mental health professionals for personalized guidance and support on your journey to well-being.

This episode has become a yearly tradition for the podcast during the holidays as we discuss how to navigate the Season alcohol free, whether you're starting day one of your alcohol free journey or have been on it for years. Alcohol consumption historically spikes during the period between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day and it can be often times be incorporated into many people's holiday traditions. Some people may use alcohol to celebrate during the holidays, but others may use it to escape some of the stress or loneliness that also can occur during this time of year.
Last year was our first holiday alcohol free and now that we have another year under our belt, we wanted to share how our holidays look different these days, but also some ways that you can enjoy the holidays without alcohol! We also talk about how your decision to change your drinking habits may (and probably will) have a ripple effect on those around you as well.
Finally, there is no reason to wait until the New Year to begin making changes in your life. If you've been contemplating going alcohol free or were going to do Dry January, start now! We often give ourself a "pass" during this time of year, whether it's with alcohol, sweets, food, not exercising, etc. because we are going to start fresh on January 1st. You don't need a new year on the calendar to begin living your best life!
As always, thank you all for listening and from Leslie and I, we hope you have a wonderful, joyous and safe holiday season!!

One year ago Leslie and I released our very first episode of the Unemployed AF Dad podcast. Starting a podcast had been something we had discussed for a long time, but life has always just kept us from ever taking any further action. When I lost my job at the end of October 2022, we knew that it was time to take that leap of faith and record an episode, put it out there and just see what happened. And here we are 365 days later after releasing 26 episodes celebrating a year of podcasting!
We have learned so so much during this first year of podcasting and are grateful for every single person who has taken the time to listen to even one episode. We could not do this without YOU! During this episode we share 5 things we've learned throughout the last year while doing the podcast, but they also are applicable to life in general.
One year down, many more to go! We hope to continue to churn out episodes that encourage you, inspire you, perhaps challenge your way of thinking at times, but make you feel like you matter and that you are not alone in this life. Whether it comes to drinking alcohol, parenting, your marriage, personal healing, etc., we cover it all on this podcast because we know these things are important. Thank you for allowing us to share our lives with you for this past year and we hope you know how much each of you mean to us. Happy Birthday Unemployed AF Dad podcast!

Even in 2023, there are still gender stereotypes that exist when it comes to defining masculinity and femininity. As children, society seems to gear boys and girls towards certain colors, toys, activities that society has determined the norm for that gender. Then as we grow into adults, there are expectations that we act a particular way, dress a certain way, and like specific things based on our gender.
The truth is, that in every individual there are both masculine and feminine energies not determined by our gender and generally one is more dominate than the other. During this episode, Leslie and I we discuss some of the toxic gender stereotypes we believe that still exist today and each of our experiences exploring our masculine and feminine energies. We also discuss raising our children to embrace both their masculine and feminine energies in everything they do, whether it be the clothes they wear, the toys the play with, the activities they participate, and the feelings and emotions they experience.

We are so honored to have the opportunity to speak with today's guest, Allison Guilbault. Allison is a New Jersey based licensed therapist specializing in anxiety and trauma. Her mission is to promote radical and relentless self-love and empowerment to populations that are often marginalized, mainly women, the queer community and individuals with non-traditional lifestyles.
During this amazing conversation, Allison shares her unique journey which lead her to becoming a licensed therapist, the importance of self love and self care, crystals & metaphysics, body positivity and unrealistic physical expectations society sets, the challenges of being a therapist, and how being sober curious for over 2 1/2 years has put her on a path to committing to a year without alcohol.
We hope you enjoy listening to this episode as much as we enjoyed making it. Again, a special thanks to Allison for taking the time to be on our podcast. Please make sure to share this one with all your family and friends!
We encourage you to check Allison Guilbault on all her platforms:

Today’s episode is one that I knew that we would record at some point, but I wasn’t sure when we’d be ready to do so. It’s not a story that we necessarily were excited to tell and certainly one Leslie and I wish didn’t happen, but in this episode of Unemployed AF Dad we revisit a night in September of 2015 when I was arrested for drunk driving. It was an all-time low moment in my life and a really difficult thing for Leslie and I to navigate through. There were some dark moments immediately following my DUI. The legal implications of that night, the financial impact, losing my license, being dropped by our insurance company, etc. were all things that were as a result of this one decision I made. But the aftermath of how this decision affected my relationship with my wife and our family was something we dealt with for years.
But this isn’t just the story of a DUI. This is also a story of how Leslie and I overcame one of the most difficult situations we had ever been faced with as a married couple. It’s a story that teaches that you can’t let your mistakes define who you are and one about forgiving yourself and learning to love yourself again because your life and happiness are worth fighting for. And finally, that the only person who can change you, is yourself. But also how having people in your life who love you and are there for you in your darkest moments, are invaluable. While this is a heavy episode, we hope that if you are dealing with a difficult situation in your life, no matter what it is, that this story inspires you, encourages you, and that you persevere knowing that better days are ahead. Often the hardest person to forgive is yourself. Once you do that, then put in the work and love yourself! You are worth it!

Finances are a challenge we all face and especially in today's world, it can be really difficult to make ends meet. This can cause a huge strain on your relationship with your partner and may be a topic you tend to avoid. It can especially be difficult if only one partner works and you are reliant on one income. Let's face it, struggling to pay your bills can impact even the strongest of relationships.
It's not necessary a "fun" subject to tackle, but one that we felt was important to discuss on today's episode. Les and I share our own experiences of trying to navigate through my recent unemployment, having two children, owning a home, paying for groceries, etc. and all the financial challenges those things bring. Our biggest takeaway, communication is key! And make sure you are your partner remember that you're on the same team, regardless of who is contributing more financially to the relationship.

The most challenging thing that Leslie and I ever faced in our marriage was my drinking. It began as casual nights out with friends that continued even as we became parents and had little ones that we were responsible for. I would still want to go out and have fun with my friends when I could, and even though I always promised that I would only "have a few" and be fine the next morning, that usually wasn't the case. This went on for years and began to drive a wedge in between us that would have never been resolved if I hadn't decided to stop drinking back in April of last year. But how did we finally get to where we are at now? Well, it sure wasn't easy!
We know there are other couples out there that are experiencing exactly what we went through. Your partner may not have Alcohol Use Disorder or even drink all the time, but if it's causing issues in your relationship then it is a problem. But how do you navigate through it? How do you communicate your feelings about their drinking without them getting defensive? Or maybe you're the partner who is drinking too much and you think your partner is overreacting or you feel attacked when they bring it up. You may feel like they don't understand your reasons for drinking and you become upset that they keep bringing it up.
This is the situation Leslie and I found ourselves in and we wanted to share our experience and let couples know they are not alone. We don't have all the answers, we didn't do everything "right", but we were able to overcome alcohol ruining our relationship and came out the other side stronger than ever! It took both of us working on our own individual healing and personal growth and then applying that to our relationship. It was a long journey and it came with a lot of emotions, tough conversations, and tears shed, but man was it worth it.

First of all, so sorry for all the feedback throughout the episode. Something was interfering with our mics so we'll get that resolved for next time. Thanks for your patience!
A few months back someone asked me why I use the term alcohol free when I talk about my life now that I don't drink. I thought this was a great question and a topic we could tackle on today's episode. As with anything in life, this is certainly open to interpretation and I believe comes down to personal preference. I choose to use the term alcohol free when describing myself, but others may prefer a different term. And that's the beauty of our own individual journeys, we can use whatever term we are comfortable with. Leslie and I do define what the words mean to us and why we choose to say alcohol free, but as we express time and time again throughout this podcast, the world is not black and white. There isn't a right and wrong answer here. At the end of the day, whether you call yourself sober, alcohol free, sober curious, etc., it means you see alcohol for what it is and are at least questioning its place in your life!

According to data from the Adoption and Foster Care Analysis and Reporting System (AFCARS), a total of 391,641 children and youth were living in foster care in 2021. Once children enter foster care, the goal is to either safely reunify them with their parents if the family concerns are resolved or secure another permanent family. So that means there are tons of kiddos out there that need a loving and safe environment to live in during this process. Our guests today are my sister Christa and her husband, Brady, who fostered two little kiddos for 8 months last year. Even though they don’t have biological children of their own yet, they nailed this parenting thing! It was incredible to see them welcome these kiddos into their lives and show them the love and affection they perhaps hadn’t known before. We asked them to share their experience and it was a fascinating conversation!
Even if you don’t plan on being a foster parent, there are a ton of ways to help! Checking in with anyone you do know that’s fostering to make sure they feel supported is a huge help! Also offering to watch the kiddos so the foster parents can get a date night together or even just bringing them a meal goes a long way. And don’t forget to check for any foster care closets you can donate to in your area or other ways you can help!
Then in part two of our conversation, since Christa, Brady, Leslie and myself all work in education in some type of capacity, we also discussed our thoughts on the education system here in the US. We not only discuss what we think is working and not working, but also our ideas on improvements we think could be made to the system. No matter how you feel, if you have kids in school don’t forget to support your teachers!! They deserve it and are so thankful for it!

Long-term relationships can be tough. That's a given. Sometimes we just forget to have fun and lose that connection with our partner that seemed so strong at the beginning of the relationship. That can be for many different reasons of course, but for Leslie and I, it was mainly because of the wedge that alcohol had driven between us. That lead to arguments and resentment and began to affect all areas of our marriage. For your relationship, it may not be alcohol. It could be financial issues, work-related stress, the responsibilities of parenting, etc. But all these things can take a toll on the relationship with your partner.
Les and I have found that our relationship is flourishing now that we have overcome some of the obstacles that alcohol had created in our lives. Because we have and continue to do our own personal growth and healing and began to accept and love ourselves, it has now made our relationship so much better. Everything from conversations, laughter, playfulness, and sex has improved. We discuss this in detail, as well as play a fun game we've done before by pulling cards from the Best Self Relationship card deck. This is a great way to create dialogue and bond with your partner. We hope you enjoy our answers and encourage you to do this with your partner as well and make your relationship fun again!

We've all heard the phrase, "just think positive thoughts" and all will be well, but what if there's more to it than that? What if what you put out into the universe is what you attract back to you? In this episode, we explore the influence of mindset, positive affirmations, and the remarkable ability to shape your own reality through the power of your thoughts. Sound a little far fetched? You may change your mind after this episode!

Raising kids has never been more challenging with everything going on in our world today. But then again, isn't that probably what our parents thought too? In this episode, we share our thoughts on how we approach raising our children in a world full of distractions and of course that means diving into technology among other things. Do we have all the answers? Of course not. But we believe you can only give you children as much as you have, so it starts with doing the work on yourself. We hope you enjoy this episode and as always, thank you so much for listening!

Today we are super excited to have our brother-in-law, Wesley Paul Hughes, on the pod! We've been wanting to get Wes on here for awhile because he and Adam have very similar alcohol free stories (and anniversary dates)! We cover everything from his drinking history, why he decided he needed to give up alcohol all together, relearning how to be a husband and father, the role alcohol plays in sports, medicinal mushrooms, going to bed early, and much much more! Yes, this is a conversation that takes many twists and turns and we hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed having it! Again, thanks so much to Wes for always being supportive of us and for taking the time to be on our podcast, love ya man!

We often talk about our own alcohol free journey starting in our late 30s, but our guest today, Lauryn, has become alcohol free in her mid 20s!
Lauryn realized that her drinking habits were becoming an issue for her, but also liked the feeling of cutting loose and being carefree when she drank. However, at the end of 2022, she finally decided that enough was enough and has been alcohol free since New Years Day this year!
We appreciate how open and honest Lauryn is in this episode and thank her so much for sharing her story! Congrats on your journey so far, you got this Lauryn!!

On April 23, 2022, Leslie and I started our alcohol free journey and what a year it's been! On today's episode we not only reflect on what the last year has been like and what we've learned, but we look forward to the future as well. Nothing could have prepared us for what we would have experienced this year and while our lives are so much better today than they were a year ago, we certainly have not gone without our struggles. We discuss some of the things that we have learned, the ways our lives have improved, but also acknowledge that there is still pain to heal from and work to be done. We also discuss the pitfalls of trying to moderate alcohol, the empowerment we now feel when we socialize and have fun without alcohol and much, much more! We hope you enjoy the episode and sincerely appreciate the love and support you've shown us during this new endeavor. And...we're just getting started!

This is such an exciting episode of Unemployed AF Dad as we were honored to have our first guest, Matt Gardiner! Matt is a Recovery Coach & Storywork Coach who has helped numerous people get out of their "stuck stories" and manage their addictions to effectively integrate sobriety into their lives.
His coaching method focuses on breath awareness, inner dialogue word choice, and reframing the stories you've been attaching to the events of your life. Matt's 4 Pillars of Recovery are: Community, Accountability, Redefine, Rediscover. Matt is a lifelong musician and Sound Therapist, which compliments his work as a Coach. In addition to all that, Matt hosts the "Beyond Recovery" podcast where guests come on to share their journeys of recovery.
Matt battled alcohol dependency from his late teens into his early 30s. He was a daily drinker from age 21 to 30. At age 27, Matt hospitalized himself with acute pancreatitis. After 3 days in the hospital, this scare was initially framed as the wake-up call Matt needed, but then he was drinking within 24 hours of being released. At age 30, Matt hit a rock bottom moment which led to 3 years + of sobriety. At a friend's wedding, he decided he would attempt “moderation” again, which he tried for the next several years. When Matt’s dad passed away suddenly in late 2018 (his Dad had been a heavy drinker his whole adult life), Matt decided on the weekend of his father's Celebration of Life that it was time to sober up once again.
That was in April 2019 and Matt just celebrated 4 years of sobriety this past Saturday, April 8th! We truly enjoyed our conversation with Matt which goes beyond just his story and know that you will too! Make sure to give him a follow at the links below:

The terms "self-care" and "self-love" seem to a buzzword these days, but what do you think of when you hear them? Do you think of bubble baths, shopping, spa days, a glass of wine at the end of a long day, etc.? If so, you NEED to listen to this episode. Self-care and self-love are much more than just treating yourself with temporary pleasures. While they are connected, they are also quite different as well. Self-love and self-care are some of the most important things we can do in life, but we often convince ourselves we are too busy to focus on.
In this episode, we discuss the foundations of self-love, (self-care being one of them) and define what they mean. Self-love is about recognizing and honoring your own needs, treating yourself with kindness and understanding, and not sacrificing your happiness and well-being to please others. Self-care falls under the self-love umbrella and is about taking action and developing a routine that works best for you to improve your physical and mental health in ways that support a good quality of life. Things like getting enough sleep and exercise, eating healthy, meditating, etc. are all examples of self-care. We also share how men and women perceive self-love and self-care differently and what our own thoughts were growing up and how those have changed as we've grown older. We also discuss the daily self-care practices we use in our own lives to try to become the best versions of ourselves we can be.

If you were given a time machine and had the ability to go back and give your younger self advice, what would you tell yourself? Inspired by my favorite movie, Back to the Future, we discuss what we would go back and tell young Adam and Leslie so that maybe they would have done some things a bit differently. However, we also acknowledge that even though we may not always make the best decisions, we all learn through experiences and gain wisdom from them. The journey is what makes us who we are and we can't just fast forward through it. We had a lot of fun with this episode and we hope you all have fun listening!
