He received his medical degree from St. Mary’s Hospital Medical School (part of the University of London) in 1981, one of the fourth generation of his family to have studied medicine at that teaching hospital. He pursued a career in gastrointestinal surgery with a particular interest in inflammatory bowel disease. He qualified as Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1985 and in 1996 was awarded a Wellcome Trust Traveling Fellowship to study small-intestinal transplantation in Toronto, Canada. He was made a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists in 2001. He has published over 140 original scientific articles, book chapters, and invited scientific commentaries. In the pursuit of possible links between childhood vaccines, intestinal inflammation, and neurological injury in children, Dr. Wakefield lost his job in the Department of Medicine at London’s Royal Free Hospital, his country, his career, his Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists, and his medical license. Dr. Wakefield considers these losses a small price to pay for the privilege of working with affected families. In 2010 he helped to found Strategic Autism Initiative (SAI), a medical research charity dedicated to identifying the environmental causes for the current autism epidemic. He is co-founder of the Autism Media Channel, a TV and video production company that seeks to bring awareness and hope to those interested in childhood developmental disorders. He is married to Carmel, a physician and a classical radio presenter. He has four children, James, Sam, Imogen, and Corin.

He received his undergraduate training in Plant Physiology from the Université de Caen, France in 1970. He trained in Nematology with Professor Kenneth Barker and Joseph Sasser and received a PhD from North Carolina State University in 1977. He joined the Canadian Department of Agriculture Research Centre in St Jean, Québec (1977-1978), and in Vancouver (1978-1996). He was the director of the Biotechnology department at the Pacific Agri-Food Research Centre in Summerland, BC (1996 - 2002). His research covered the gamut from applied nematode management to biological control, chemical control and resistance breeding, to biochemistry, genetic engineering and molecular taxonomy, of root-knot, root-lesion, stem and bulb and virus vector nematodes on alfalfa, small fruit crops, ginseng, grapes, apple, vegetables, and forest trees. He pioneered the use of non coding ribosomal DNA sequences to identify nematodes. His universal DNA primers are now used to identify all plant parasitic nematodes, in particular the difficult virus vector nematodes and other quarantined nematodes, entomophagous nematodes, and even pathogenic fungi and beneficial fungi. He developed a popular biochemical method to evaluate the strength of bonding between enzymes and their protein inhibitors, and he showed the potential of cystatin and serine proteinase inhibitors against the Colorado potato beetle, the root-knot nematodes, and several pathogenic fungi. He published the results of his collaborations with 57 researchers from 14 countries and states in 84 refereed publications, 7 book chapters, and 132 Abstracts and technical summaries. He presented 56 seminars and keynote addresses in 19 countries and states. In 1979 he joined the Editorial Board of Revue de Nématologie, and became Co Editor in Chief in 1992 when the Revue became Fundamental and Applied Nematology (1992-1997). He was Associate Editor of Journal of Nematology (1990-1991; 1996-1997) and Nematologica (1992-1997). In 1990 he was appointed to the Governing Board of the European Society of Nematology (ESN). In 1993 he was elected by the Board to represent the ESN in negotiations to create a global federation of Nematology Societies. In 1997 he was elected the first Vice President of the International Federation of Nematology Societies. Between 1978 and 1997 he served and chaired several Committees of the Society of Nematologists (SON). In 1992 he organized the Local Arrangements for the SON annual conference in Vancouver, Canada. In 1997 he was elected Vice President of the SON, and served as President Elect, President and Past President (1997-2001). He was Program chair of the Fourth International Congress of Nematology (Tenerife, June 2002) and President of the International Federation of Nematology Societies until 2003. He retired from research in June 2003 and traveled in many countries of Central America, Europe and Asia, for a year. India is his favourite country, one to be seen in many trips. He lived on Gabriola Island for a year before settling in Courtenay BC in 2005. He developed a focus on gardening and organic lifestyle, bought a small farm with his companion Chanchal Cabrera, they were married in July 2006.
